    1. obit: Brendtha Eleanor Vaughan
    2. found in grandmother West's scrapbook Barry West Obituary Brentha Eleanor Vaughan, the only daughter of Angeline and Edwin Baughan, was born in Wyalusing, Pa., September 21, 1864, and departed this life on March 12, 1943, at the age of 78 years, five months and nineteen days. In early childhood Brentha Vaughan moved with her parents to Keokuk, Iowa. It was here that her father died when she was only six years of age. Her mother made her home with her in Des Moines and Leon until her passing in 1916. An only brother died in early life. In 1895 Miss Vaughan became the wife of Andrew J. Smyth and moved with him to Des Moines, Iowa, shere she lived until 1907. To this union was born one son, Edwin Vaughan Smyth. The husband and father passed away in 1904 after a wedded life of only nine years. Three years later, in 1907, Mrs. Smyth was united in marriage to Aleander G. George and came to Leon where she spent the remainder of her life on a farm one mile east of town. To this second union one daughter, ruth, was born. Mrs. George was a charter member of the Leon Chapter of the D. A. R. She had been a member of the Eastern Star for 37 years, first becoming a merber in Des Moines and later transferring her membership to Chapter 352 in Leon. She united with the Presbyterian church of Leon on January 5, 1908 and remained a loyal member until her death. She was active in all of its work as long as her health permitted. Besides her husband, Mrs. George is survived by her son, Edwin Vaughan Smyth of the U. S. Navy, who is now stationed at Great Lakes, Illinois, the daughter, Ruth, of Leon, and other relatives and friends. She was a very patriotic woman who loved her home and her country, a loving wife and mother who forgot herself in her interests of others. She will be sadly missed by her many friends. Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at the Stewart Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. L. L. Spalding, pastor of the Presbyterian church. Burial was in the Leon cemetery. Cards of Thanks We wish to express our most sincere thanks and appreciation to many friends and neighbors for their kindness shown us at the death of our loved one and during her illness, and for the beautiful flowers. Gurley George Ruth George Vaughan Smyth.

    3. I am so pleased to tell all about the wonderful reception Barry's articles received at my recent MOREN family reunion. I took the liberty of copying a few of the emails he sent that had to do with Van Wert and one with an entry about Pfc. Joseph Moren (my dad's cousin). Everyone enjoyed reading the articles and was curious about how I had attained them. I'm pretty sure we will have more people reading, and contributing to, the Decatur website now that they know about it. Thank you for a great website, and a special thanks to Barry for transcribing his grandmother's scrapbook--what a treasure. I appreciate everyone who helps to make this website possible. I have received such positive help here. Gwendolyn BAKER Melton, CA great granddaugher of Joseph & Minerva MOREN of Van Wert, IA

    1. Mitch Welling and Milo Dingman
    2. Some more notes to the "list" that reflect entries that caught my eye. Barry has been very busy and I enjoy all of his items. Two of them below - message #122 had this death announcement for my uncle Mitch. I don't know if Mitch ever had much money ( to speak of) but he always dressed like Beau Brummel. I thought he was probably a millionaire. As of now I suspect he spent a high proportion of his income on clothes. . jack Firstly, from msg #122 found in grandmother West's scrapbook Barry West Brother of Leon Lady Died In Kansas City Mitchell Welling, 63, of 5050 Oak, Kansas City, Mo., known as "Mitch" to his friends in Leon, died last Thursday at St. Luke's Hospital where he had been a patient three weeks. Mr. Welling suffered with a heart ailment. He was born in Maryville, Mo., and moved to Kansas City in 1929. (deleted by jes) Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Viola welling; a sister, Mrs. Alice Scott, of Leon; and a brother, G. L. Welling ; and his mother, Mrs. Alice Welling, of Maryville. Interment was made at Maryville at 2:00 p. m., Saturday. Dr and Mrs. C. D. Scott of Leon attended the services. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Secondly, (from a note I had written to the list on 18may2002 - the Dingmans lived south of us on Main Street and, as you can tell from my comment, I thought Milo had artistry to spare. . jack I didn't know Milo Dingman well at all. But he had a talent for carving statues and creating various other kinds of art work. He went to my dad and asked for some dental compounds to do his work in. I think some of them were great! One in particular was the figure of a golfer, club and all. Super talent! I've completely lost track of Milo. I'm sorry.
