    1. Davis City Coal..
    2. Charles Mallette
    3. I enjoyed the material that you put on the Decatur County List, Steve. You're correct, Iowa has had many coal operations in the past. I seem to recall seeing an article from the Des Moines Register about the last active coal mine in the state, and that was closing. This can change, of course, from month to month. The Iowa coal won't go away -- it will stay there until it's needed. And it be needed again one day. In an effort to find out more about the Davis City coal, I plan on stopping by the Iowa Geological Survey, in Iowa City, in the next few months. I will report back to the List on my findings regarding the Davis City coal. Thanks for all your help, Steve, Regards to all, Chuck Mallette Houston

    2. Steve Puckett
    3. [I found this on the Internet and thought you might be interested. - Steve] http://www.circushistory.org/Query03.htm September 18, 2004 - This is an article from the Leon Journal-Reporter published about 7 years ago. I thought this might give you a clue even if I couldn't find the answer to your question. Please let me know if you found them helpful. Candy Brown, Van Meter, Iowa, former resident of Hopeville, Iowa, CABBOB70@aol.com. "Elephat Safari Begins in Decatur County. About one year ago Don Young, a Decatur County history buff, learned of the burial of an elephant near Decatur, Iowa, back in the early 1900s. He began digging into the files at the Decatur County Museum aided by . . . the historical society. . . . found an article with a snapshot and gave it to Don. He investigated further and found that [a person of Decatur] had a bone from the elephant that his father had found. . . . set out to find the burial spot. . . . Over the years until the bone was found, dogs and coyotes had dug up the shallow grave. The following is a story told to a reporter many years later and was printed. Some of the names may be wrong, but those involved are no longer living. The 1915 death of an elephant may be no 'big' thing, but when it is in Decatur County then we have another first. According to the story, a circus was heading for Davis City following a performance at Van Wert, when an elephant managed to break open a wagon loaded with freshly threshed oats. Needles to say the pachyderm gourged himself, and as it were, it caused him to 'founder'. Gradually losing his strength the beast finally gave out at the Clarence Millsap farm about 1 1/2 miles south of Decatur on the road to Davis City. With a few tons of carcass on their hands circus officials quickly negotiated to bury the animal near the Millsap home. Because of the enormous size, it was agreed that it should be dismembered so that it would fit in a smaller hold. (Just try burying an elephant sometime!) With their work completed, and with two tusks for their trouble, the circus moved on - and one elephant found its way into a page of Decatur County history. To add a bit of humor to the story, Gerald 'Graves' of Leon said that years later he and Carl 'Coffin' went to the site and exhumed one of the legs of the poor fellow and made cribbage boards. . . ." 1. RE: Davis City Coal Mine(s)
    2. Steve Puckett
    3. I was intrigued by the idea of coal mines in Iowa so I did some digging around the Internet. I did not find anything yet specific for Decatur County but did find many interesting websites. Here are a few for your enjoyment. Steve Puckett http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/mine/02abhowe.htm The Geological Survey Bureau compiled coal mine-related data from a variety of sources to develop a database of abandoned underground coal mines in Iowa. The database created from this information that includes tabular and geographic information system components. Information sources included surveyed mine maps prepared while the mines were in operation, maps and reports prepared by the State Mines Inspectors Office, Iowa Geological Survey Annual Reports, and other sources. Coal resource-related geologic data was also compiled by GSB and is now used to help ascertain mining depths and coal thicknesses. As the data was compiled efforts were made to preserve the original mine maps that included cleaning and enclosing the maps in mylar envelopes. At the same time large-format photographs were taken of the maps. The photographs were used to develop the GIS components of the database and are now used in place of the original maps for most inquiries about the details of mine layout. Over three thousand mine sites have been located using historic records. Approximately 2,740 are underground mines and 340 are surface mines. The mined extent is known for about 830 underground mines. Approximate extents are known for an additional 370 underground mine sites. About half of the sites are documented as point locations only with varying locational accuracy. Other types of information compiled from the coal mining records include mine entrance types, shaft locations and depths, dates of operation, and superintendent's name. About 270 additional mines for which no location data is available may have operated in Iowa and were compiled as a list of names and post office box addresses. Thirty-two Iowa counties had some coal mining activity between 1840 and 1994, although most mining was concentrated in about ten counties. All coal mined in Iowa was from Pennsylvanian-age rocks. Within the Pennsylvanian, the lower Cherokee Group was the primary source of coal, although significant amounts of stratigraphically higher coal were mined in the area around Centerville, Iowa. ========================= Also, here's some general websites about coal mining in Iowa. The museums in particular may have information on Decatur coal mines. http://fp.uni.edu/iowahist/Social_Economic/CoalMining_inIowa/coal_mining_in_iowa.htm Coal mining in Iowa 1870-1940 http://www.igsb.uiowa.edu/browse/iowacoal/iowacoal.htm Iowa Coal: Fuel for a New State's Growth http://www.madridiowa.com/Museum.htm Madrid IA museum Walk through a replica of an underground coal mine. 3. This Charlotte Eleanor Duncan Elliott was a cousin of my paternal grandmother, Gretchen Duncan Collins - probably named after our common ancestor (my great great grandmother Eleanor Duncan).. a great many of my Duncan ancestors married their first cousins, and gggrandmother Eleanor was also born a Duncan, and married her first cousin, Alfred Gillis Duncan. The Duncan clan migrated to the Lineville area around 1838 with the Porters, Laughlins, Berrys, Littons, Rockholds, Gartons, Lovetts, Sullivans and others, and many intermarried. Thanks for the posting. Marilyn in Texarkana
