From "Reflections of Grand River, Iowa 1881 - 1981 p. 12 GRAND RIVER HISTORY Grand River is located about a half mile from the west bank of Grand River, in section 33, in Richland Township, on the Burlington Railroad which was formerly known as the Humeston & Shenandoah Railroad. It is in the heart of a fine agricultural district, inhabited by the most substantial and progresive farmers of Southern Iowa. The soil in this district is very rich. Also, as a trading point, Grand River is of considerable importance. This town was laid out in 1881 by E. C. Perkins for a corporation then known as the Town Lot Company, a company organized for the purpose of laying out towns along the route of the Humeston & Shenandoah Railroad. The first business house was constructed by the firm of Bosworth & Milligan and was known at the Blue Front. It was used continuously as a general sotre until the building was destroyed by fire in the spring of 1905. G.W.Bradshaw started the first store, according to account, and later entered partnership with Mr. Lamb. S. C. Jennings started a general store in 1886. A school building was constructed in the town in 1876 and a union church building in 1881. Other businesses were: Brothers and Fear - general merchandise; Samuel Landis - barber shop; Grand River Lumber Co. - lumber yard; Bay Brothers - grocery store and livery stable; Wm. B. Howard - agricultural implements; A. C. Turner - wagon and blacksmith shop; C. Smith harness shop and coal; Dr. Bone and Cole - drug store; C. W. Stanley - general merchandise; Taylor and Overholtzer - meat market; Kirkendall and Day - wagon and blacksmith shop; Treanor Sisters - millinery shop; Noah Farnstaff - clothing store; Patrick Griffin - postmaster; J. D. Harrow - Valley House Hotel; and Charles Chapman - Chapman Hotel. Some of the first residents of the town were Schuyler Jennings, C. H. Chapman, A. R. Taylor, John Burham, Dr. H. C. Bone, Dr. Landes, W. J. Beck, H. C. Jennings. Several of the above assisted in selecting a name for the new town in its early days. At a public meeting held in 1881, Beulah, Westerville and other names were proposed and rejected in turn. A motion made by C. H. Chapman, later proprietor of the Chapman House, to call the town Grand River prevailed and so the town was named. To Be Continued
Page 1-5 of Decatur Twp. 1885 Iowa State Census are now on the Census page at: _www.rootsweb.com/~iadecatu/census.html_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~iadecatu/census.html) Some things you need to know about Decatur Township in this census: 1. This township was entered onto the census forms very differently then usual. It's sort of in alphabetical order by letter but once you get to the letter (i.e. a, b, c) then it isn't in alphabetical order anymore (i.e. Belomy comes before Bare). 2. The pages were originally two-sided. There is a lot of bleed through from the other side of the page on this part of the microfilm making words very difficult to decipher in some spots as there are two words on top of each other, one forwards and one backwards. 3. This person had atrocious spelling! Just a few examples - Newbraska, Indania, Aurthur. 4. The microfilm is very blurry and couldn't be sharpened any more. I had one of the librarians come and adjust it for me and she couldn't get it any sharper either. So if there are mistakes I apologize ahead of time. You might take more time checking alternate spellings and if something looks really out of place you can email me or try getting the film by interlibrary loan to take a look yourself. Here are the surnames so far: Akers Akes Beck Biddle Buckingham Brenaman Belomy Ball Brown McCalla Lefler Bare Burnett Bishop Cochran Campbell Johnson Clark Covington Stacey Dietiker CC Decatur County IAGenweb Website

Stacey, After a little research, I was able to identify Wion, Lloyd Calvin, abt 1928. His father was Wion, Albert, May 1899. Albert's father was Wion, John William b.1850. Albert is a son from a second marriage to Melvina Cook. My Grandmother Wion, Nancy E b 1878 was a daughter of John W.Wion and his first wife Elizabeth Osborn b.1848. My records indicate that Lloyd Wion died 4 May 1999 and is burried in the Glendale Cemetary in Des Moines. How does your linage fit into this? The album includes entries by both family and friends beginning in 1884 and ending in 1889. Entries included in the album are as follows: Autograph Album belonging to Miss Sadie SEIBERLING of Mitchellville, Iowa Family: * Althea SEIBERLING "Sister", 29 Jan 1885, Mitchellville, IA * Clara SEIBERLING "Sister", 29 Jan 1885, Mitchellville, IA Friends: * Blanche WHEELER, 31 Dec 1884 * Lulu WHEELER, 31 Dec 1884 * Mary SELLERS, 31 Dec 1884 * Mrs. Clara E. Charles was age 35, born in OH to PA born parents, a Farmer who along with his wife, Jerusha C. age 32, born in OH to OH born parents were living with six children during 1880. The children included, John G. age 13, Clara M. age 8, Alta L. age 7, Sarah C. age 5, Harry G. age 2, and Etta May age 1 year, all born in IA. Also living in the household was Ida SEIBERLING age 22, born in OH to PA born parents; no relationship noted however, I'm wondering if she might be a sister to Charles. Sarah Catherine or "Sadie" married Albert SCHMIDT in 1871 and died 6 July 1938 in Summit County, OH. Her sister Althea Laura SEIBERLING was born 15 Nov 1873 at Mitchellville, IA and died 2 Dec 1956 in Des Moines, IA. Althea married Milan J. HIBBS on the 29th of June 1892 in Mitchellville, IA. Their sister Clara Maude SEIBERLING also born in Mitchellville, IA in June 1871, married Albert Bertus CRAIG on the 7th of Feb 1894 in Mitchellville, IA and died 27 Oct 1951 in Mitchellville, IA. I'm hoping to locate someone from this family so that this wonderful old treasure can be returned to its rightful place with family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
Thanks, Stacey! I only know of one family of my ancestors who came over to America this late. They were my Great-Great Grandparents on my Mother's side - Richard Roberts and Nancy (Berryman) came over from Wales and Ireland about the same time. He landed in Cincinnati and she, along with her brothers, were in New York. When the brothers had saved enough money, they moved to McLean County, Illinois where they bought land and Nancy married Richard in 1860. Right after my Grandpa, Thomas Roberts, was born, they migrated to Decatur County where he ran the mill on Grand River. I had found them in the Famine Immigrants series of books but it's still exciting to see them on the internet and this way I can check on the others in the family. Nancy was only 15 when she came to America with her brothers. That must have been scary and her brothers were only in their early 20's. She had a sister who was 3 years older so I'll check to see when she came over. Our lives are so easy compared to these folks. Anybody else find their people in the Castle Garden database? Thanks again, Stacey! The guess about the name Isaiah was correct--he's 4. If the supposition is correct that they may be the grandparents of Hannah Jane Ross you are seeking, the one of their sons was probably her father--perhaps killed in or he died as a result of injuries in the Civil War? The sons in the household in 1850 are: George W. age 19, Thomas 13 and Jacob 11. Any of these would have been old enough to father a child by 1862 or so. In the Civil War Pension collection on Ancestry.com there is a pension file claim against the service of a Thomas Ross Jr. by father Thomas Ross Sr., guardian. The younger Thomas served in the 29th Iowa Infantry, Company G. The pension was filed for on May 1, 1882. Of course you can get that file to get the details of the children's ages, marriage date, wife's name, etc. Looks pretty likely that the Thomas Jr. is probably the father of your Hannah Jane. For what it's all worth! Hi Stacy, You may already have rec'd this info since I get the list in digest form so am always lagging a little behind... :-) Think part of the problem is that she gives a different birth year than 1855 in the censuses. In the 1880 census Perry is 24, she is 17 (b ca 1862), listed as Jane, and there is a female child "D.M." age 1. They are in Richland Twp., Decatur Co. In the 1885 Iowa census they are in Long Creek Twp. and she gives her age as 22, so b ca 1862-3. In 1900 they are in Grand River Twp. and it gives her birth year as Aug 1861. Says she is Hannah Jane, the mother of 10, 10 living. Both censuses give her birthplace as Iowa and in 1900 it says both of her parents were born in Iowa. Children at home in 1900 are: Cecelia, Noah, Mary E., Grace and Willard. In the same household are an Albert Kelly age 26, wife Dalie M. age 20 (prob the dau D.M. listed in 1880), and grandson Elbe age 2. In going back to 1870, I finally found a Hannah J. Ross age 8--in Long Creek Twp. Head of household is Thomas Ross age 59 (prob her grandfather?), wife Margaret 60 (both b PA), "Isah" 24 (male--perhaps Isaiah?) b PA, Martin Samuel 10 b IA and Hannah J. 8 b IA. At least this will give you some clues to follow. found in grandmother West's scrapbook Barry West Mrs. Myrtle Carson, elderly Cainsville woman and the widow of Henry Carson, former Albany man, was fatally burned Wednesday when her clothing ignited as she attempted to rekindle a stove fire, says the Bethany Republican Clipper. The accident occurred in the morning, and Mrs. Carson died about 8 o'clock that night. Mrs. Carson had a room at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Bain, where Richard Clegg had stopped that morning to build a fire for Mrs. Carson. The fire did not grow as it was expected, and Mrs. Carson stuffed some papers into the stove to renew it. Flames spread from these papers, which protruded from the stove door, and set fire to her clothing. Apparently with idea of smothering the flames Mrs. Carson leaped into her bed but the bedding also ignited. When Mr. and Mrs. Bain responded to Mrs. Carson's cries, her clothing was almost burned away. Mr. and Mrs. Carson lived at Albany for many years, but two or three years ago she moved from there to Cainsville, where she had relatives and where she believed she could receive better cars. Mrs. Carson body was taken to Albany for funeral services and burial.
Part 2 News from other towns In a temperature of 37 degrees below zero more than a week ago near Woolstock, Iowa, both legs of "Tokey" Walker, Pattonsburg young man who was employed a year ago in Bethany at Curlely's bakery, were badly frozen and acquaintances here have heard that one or both of them may have to be amputated, says the Bethany Republican Clipper. Walker worked in the Bethany bakery for several weeks as a bread wrapper. For some time he has been working with truckmen hauling corn from northern Iowa, and the night his legs were frozen he was with Earl Mode of Pattonsburg. Drifts of snow were heavy there about Woolstock, which is about fifty miles north of Ames, and when the Mode truck became stalled in the snow, Walker, who was not hevily clad, waded about for some time in the snow which came almost to his waist. Truckmen friends here have heard that he was not taken to a hospital until after his return to Missouri. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fire which began in the Evert Tilley garage Saturday night about 8:30 o'clock spread in the subzero weather when the fire hose and a waater plug were found to be frozen, and at the end had burned the Tilly automobile, the garage, many tools, a coal shed, a smokehouse, a considerable quantity of stacked lumber, and about half a ton of coal, says the Bethany Republican-Clipper. There was fire insurance on the automobile, which was a 1935 Chevrolet sedan, but no insurance on the other property burned. No water was thrown by the fire company, members of which said several sections of hose were found to be frozen. One fire plug near which there had been a leak also appeared to be frozen, it was said by the Tilley family. The fire apparently was caused by heat fromit, which struck and ignited paper with which the garage was lined. Evert Tilley had started the car, then had gone back into the huse fro Mrs. Tilley, leaving the motor running. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Pane-full" cold took its toll in plate glass yesterday morning when it is supposed to have caused the large plate glass window in Dunham's cafe to crack and the glass in the door at the A. & P. store to fall out of the door frame, says the Harrison County Times. Jess Dunham was sitting in the cafe about 8:30 yesterday morning when he heard a report which sounded like someone had fired a gun at the front of the cafe. He looked at the window and saw that it had cracked from side to side. It was insured. Replacing the glass costs about $85 exclusive of the salvage value of the old glass. Mr. McCormick, manager of the A. & P.., said one of the clerks built up the fire in the store early in the morning and started to leave the store. When he closed the door, the glass fell out. One corner of the large window at the Hamilton hardware in cracked, the damage occuring sometime Monday or Tuesday. Employees at the store said they thought at first a pebble thrown from the wheel of a passing car night have cracked the glass. In view of what the cold had done to other windows, they later decided the change in temperature might have been responsible for the damage.

The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, June 24, 1909 Ten or more years ago MRS. A.B. GOOKIN, of this city, and the MISSES CARRIE and BESSIE JUDD, of Garden Grove, attended school together. Later the MISSES JUDD went to the Philippine Islands, where they engaged in teaching. MISS CARRIE JUDD was married to a MR. BRIGGS, who also was engaged in school work on the islands. Three children were born to them, one little girl, now being seven years old and twin daughters, eight months of age. Soon after the twins were born MRS. BRIGGS died, and on Saturday, the sister arrived in Chariton, and were guests at the GOOKIN home, on their way to the old home at Garden Grove, where the children will be put in the care of the grandparents, MR. BRIGGS expecting to return to the states in the fall. This is a most pathetic passage in every day life and only illustrates the hazards that are encountered by those who reach out beyond their own environs. --------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert July 25, 2005 iggy29@rnetinc.net
