From Cooollll NWKS We still have snow on the ground from our first tracking snow of the year, Nov. 27th. It was a blizzard! Knocked down utility poles, broke power lines and closed I-70 from Salina, KS to Denver, CO. for almost 2 days!! Schools were closed, state highways were closed, etc. Not to mention all the rural homes without electricty from 6:30 PM on the 27th through Dec. 1st. My son was stuck on Nov.28th with a 4 Wheel drive pickup going down the hill in a snowdrift coming out of his driveway.......He was trying to get to town to stay at Mom's Motel (My House). He was one of the ones without power from 6:30 PM on the 27th!! It took the Sheriff's office and the County Road Department to get him out and he got into town around 4:30 the 28th. Had to follow the County Road Dept. into town because of the blowing snow and drifting. Since then we've had 3 more snows, tracking snows, but not devastating ones like the first one. This morning it was -8 degrees and a wind chill of -26 when I was trying unsuccessfully to start my car to go to work. It warmed up to 14 or so today and at 6:30PM when I got home from work it was 4 degrees. I did get the car started, let it run for about 30 minutes, then drove around town and looked at the Christmas decorations for another 30 minutes before coming home and shutting it off. We're supposed to be warm tomorrow, Hi of 30 and a low of 8. Bring on the heat wave! The Chariton Patriot Thursday, January 13, 1875 On Tuesday, about two p.m., a little stir was created in the southwest part of town by the smashing of a hand car by a freight train that stole upon the section hands unawares. The train was not discovered until it was too late to stop the car and get it off the track, so that all that was left was for the men to get out of the way, which they did by tumbling into the snow and rolling away from the track. They had barely got off the track when the engine struck the little car and made short work in demolishing it. The day train came up at the time, but was running so slowly as to be easily checked ------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert December 8, 2005 iggy29@rnetinc.net My Note: When I read this article, I thought about how my great grandmother, Cedothia Weldon, had been accidentally shot below the knee, by a gun that was kept under the bed.. Long Creek had flooded and she went to retrieve the gun to keep it from getting wet. The only way they could get her out, and to a doctor, was by a railroad hand car. she lost that portion of her leg. When I was a kid, it was lots of fun watching two fellows pumping those hand cars down the railroad tracks...
The Chariton Patriot Chariton, Iowa Thursday, January 13, 1875 A COLD NIGHT.-- Last Friday night was probably the coldest that we have had in this section for many years. Early Friday morning it was snowing gently and quite calm, but suddenly a north-west gale came sweeping over the country, bringing chilly tidings from the ice bound north, and warning all to prepare for still lower mercury, and perchance an increasing wind. The snow soon began to wirl and twirl, and dance and prance around, and manifest such a disposition to all get in through the windows and at the bottom of the doors that an unusual demand was at once made on the housewife for rugs, pieces of old carpet, etc., to resist its wholesale entrance into all parts of her dominions. Throughout the day the storm raged in regular old '56 and '57 style, and when evening came the mercury was still creeping nearer and nearer the both of the thermometer, and marking, it is said, as low as 28 degrees below zero. Of course, the night throughout was a severe one, and we record it as such, and patiently await the end news -- sure to come -- of frozen families and stock in the country west and north where the people are so poorly prepared for such severe temperature. The standing of the thermometer on Saturday morning is given by different parties at from 22 to 25 below zero. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert December 8, 2005 iggy29@rnetinc.net I thought this was an appropriate article -- with our current snow!! I'm in Indiana -- and it arrived today...

As a very young kid, my mom and I visited Iowa for Christmas during WW2 (probably 1943), arriving on the Burlington Zephyr (stainless steel streamliner) and we were met at the depot my my uncle from Leon, IA, who was driving his work vehicle, a green Telephone Company truck. It's my earliest memory of snow, a rarity for most flatland Californians. Rick, Merced, CA
We had a dab here in Carson City, NV. last night. This morn. it really came down for awhile. Got about 2 inches. About 30 years ago, the family owned a frosty type hamburger stand. My oldest boy had a friend that was always bugging me for free food. One day I told him he could have anything on the menu the day it snowed. It never snows there..Right? Wrong. I bet the first snowflake had barely landed when the phone rang and I heard, "Hey! Lady. I'll take a chicken dinner." Barbara
Hi everyone! We are snowed in for the day here with 10 inches of snow and up all around the Kansas City area. I have at least a foot of snow on the deck. The kids are home from school and have been out playing. We had hot chocolate, grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup for lunch. Brings back so many good childhood memories. I grew up in Nebraska and made frequent trips to Iowa to visit my grandparents. In the winter there was always a lot of snow! Every Christmas we made the trip east on Highway 34 to Creston and there was always snow on the ground. I remember the snow plows on the highways and singing Christmas carols. We almost never have snow this deep here so it was wonderful to wake up this morning and see it knee deep everywhere. Christmas and December just don't seem right without a lot of snow! How about you? Do you have any good snow or Christmas memories that you would like to share? Stacey Dietiker
Suzy Lee fell in love. She planned to marry Joe. She was so happy about it all, she told her Pappy so. Pappy told her, "Suzie, gal, you'll have to find another. I'd just as soon yo' Maw don't know, but Joe is yo' half-brother!" So Suzie forgot about her Joe and planned to marry Will. But after telling Pappy this, he said "There's trouble still." You can't marry Will, my gal, and please don't tell yo' mother, 'cause Will and Joe and several mo' I know is yo' half-brother." But Mama knew and said "Honey chile, do what makes yo' happy. Marry Will or marry Joe, You ain't no kin to Pappy!"
I'm trying to locate Freda Strampe. I have some information she may like to have on the Shuck and Livengood families. Donna in OR

i am going to try this method of getting to John Kane since the email he posted does not work. I hope you read this and contact me. John, I don't know if I can help or not. My husband's ancestors were the Williams' from High Point, Thomas and Rachel. Their daughter Louvina married Louis Clark, they had a son John Clark. who I believe was named after Louvina's brother John Williams. I have three children for John and Isadoro. They are Emmett (1891), Ruth ( 1893) and Clair (1878))(who died in childhood in 1890). Since there is such a large number of years between Clare and Emmett, i am sure there could be more children. I don't know if this helps or not. I would be glad to share what other information I have. There is a connection to the Ramseys as John Williams (John Clark's uncle) married Harriet Ramsey (dau of John Ramsey) in Decatur County in 1866. They are all buried in the Highpoint cemetery. Please let me know if this information is of any help. Judy
Today you'll find six new biographies added to the 1915 History Bios Page including: Frank E. Chastain, John M. Chastain, Sr., Heman C. Smith, James F. Harvey, Oliver W. Foxworthy M.D. and Walter G. Badham. You can find these at: _www.rootsweb.com/~iadecatu/bioDocs/BIO1915.html_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~iadecatu/bioDocs/BIO1915.html) Even if you aren't related to these people you might want to read some of these biographies. They include many details of the development of Decatur County and there are many other surnames detailed in each biography. Usually the parents of the subject and the maternal and paternal grandparents and also the wife and both of her parents family history are included. Heman C. Smith is by far the best biography I've transcribed so far from this book for including a wealth of information! We also have a new biography for Ladislas/Ladislans Madarasz on the 1887 Bios Page courtesy of Christy Jay: _www.rootsweb.com/~iadecatu/bioDocs/BIO1887.html_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~iadecatu/bioDocs/BIO1887.html) And we have a new photo postcard of Pleasanton on the Pleasanton Town History Page courtesy of Beverly. _www.rootsweb.com/~iadecatu/earlydecDocs/Pleasanton.html_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~iadecatu/earlydecDocs/Pleasanton.html) Stacey Dietiker momdit@aol.com Decatur Co IA List Administrator Decatur Co IA Website Coordinator
