Annie's 1845 birth in WV would fit this scenario. If correct, she would be a granddaughter of Adam Bright and Sarah Headly Bright (Sarah, when widowed in WV, followed several of her children to Decatur Co., IA and died there in 1874. Anna's two children by a previous marriage, John A. Bright and Valena L. or Retta L. But her son John A. Bright was found in 1895, Ottumwa; 1900, Oskaloosa; 1910, Chariton. He and wife Ella then vanish, but their son James Bright was in Des Moines in 1920 and Detroit in 1930, married to Winifred ------, and they named a son James. > I have not yet found any of these folks in 1870 (one year after the Adair marriage) or in 1860, but I'm stlll looking. The evidence is only circumstantial at the moment but it does look promising. Rick
Regarding the Alley Family, my great Aunt Helen Harp was married to William Alley, his parents were Mack C. Alley and Jess?. I don't know much about them except that Helen and William lived there lives in Shenandoah. Helen was from Leon but find her in Fisher Fremont County, Iowa with her widowed father according to the 1920 census. 1920 census shows William with his parents in Shenandoah, they married about 1921. Don't know if that helps. Have located and been in contact with Helen's grandchildren Jo ----- Original Message ----- From: "Janice Lund" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, December 23, 2009 4:52 PM Subject: [IADECATU] H. Decatur County Journal Leon, Iowa Thursday, December 14, 1911 Leon people and the people of the entire county as well are quite generally obeying the oft repeated command to "do Christmas shopping early." Leon merchants report an unusually heavy holiday business during the past few days and say that the people are doing their buying earlier than in some years and that their purchases are considerably heavier than usual. Business is rushing at all the stores and if Decatur County people are not prosperous Christmas shopping is no criterion of prosperity. The Christmas spirit is everywhere. There is the Christmas gladness about the people you meet and best of all they are mostly bent upon buying early to avoid the rush. Business is good and Leon merchants are pleased. Toyland in the various stores is the Mecca of many and few fail to buy a bit of brightly painted wood, iron or tin for some dear little one. Then there are eager shoppers inspecting the displays of cut glass, of jewelry, of furniture, stoves and household articles, books, musical instruments, furs, wearing apparel and gift goods of various kinds. Business is at the top notch at the candy departments and quantities of the sweetmeats are already being purchased for the holidays. The clothing men are enjoying the impetus of trade caused by Christmas too, and gifts for father and the boys are being sold in large quantities. The stores will all be open evenings until after Christmas in order that those who desire to do so can do shopping at night. The stocks of holiday goods in Leon this year are certainly fine and in great variety. ---------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert December 24, 2009 [email protected] This was fun to read and share -- good news for a change... Decatur County Journal Leon, Iowa Thursday, November 30, 1911 C.F. KENTNER, of Leon, who was injured on November 16th, near Weldon, is recovering from the effects of the accident nicely. Mr. KENTNER was working for ARTHUR HOOVER a half mile west of Weldon, shucking corn. On the morning of November 16th, he was at work in the field and was driving a team of young horses attached to the wagon into which he was throwing the corn as he gathered it. He was near the front end of the wagon when the horses became frightened and started to run. Mr. KENTNER grabbed the lines and the horses jerked him under the wagon, one of the front wheels passing over his right shoulder. The wagon contained about twenty-three bushels of corn at the time and the heavy wagon with the extra weight of the load of corn, caused painful injuries. In spite of his bruises Mr. KENTNER got up and started after the runaway team. The horses ran into a fence where Mr. HOOVER, who had seen the runaway from a distance, caught them. Mr. KENTNER returned to his home in this city where he has been since the accident. No bones were fractured which was most remarkable. --------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert December 24, 2009 [email protected]
Decatur County Journal Leon, Iowa Thursday, November 30, 1911 On Wednesday, November 22, the twentieth anniversary of Mr. And Mrs. L.C. THOMPSON, their relatives concluded they would give them a surprise and help them celebrate their China wedding. At about 11:00 o'clock as had been previously arranged when Mrs. Thompson was busily preparing the midday meal as she supposed for herself and husband she was greatly surprised on looking out to see a number of buggies and carriages come driving up the lane. Father, mother, brothers and sisters of both herself and husband, began to alight. In answer to her look of surprise, they asked her whose wedding day and informed her that just twenty years had passed since L.C. Led her, a young and blushing bride, to the altar, having by this time somewhat regained her composure, although still considerably nervous, she very cordially invited them in and gave them complete control of her home, saying that she had started dinner but that they could finish it which they did from well filled baskets; soon having a feast prepared fit for a king. JOSIAH ALLEN's wife says "the way to reach a man's heart is through his stomach." The good wives of that assembly surely reached the hearts of their husbands for once for in looking over the table it seemed that nothing in the way of luxuries from either the farm or store were missing. After they had all satisfied the longings of the inner man and of course, were in the best of humor, they repaired to the parlor where the afternoon was spent in social chat and music. Miss IVAH, the only daughter of the host and hostess, gave us a rare treat in the way of music as she is an accomplished musician, also Messrs. H.O. TUTTLE and GERRY SAYLOR and Mrs. RAY LANTZ and LELA KELLER rendered a number of songs in a pleasing manner which was very much appreciated by the guests. The day passed all too quickly as such days usually do and almost before we were aware of it, the shades of evening began to appear, warning us that it was time to return to our homes and again take up the sterner duties of life Only the near relatives of the host and hostess were present. Such days will ever remain green in the memory of those who were present. The guests departed for their homes saying it was good to have been there and wishing Mr. And Mrs. L.C. THOMPSON many, many more returns of their anniversary. -------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtre)Seifert December 24, 2009 [email protected]

Decatur County Journal Leon, Iowa Thursday, February 29, 1912 EMORY BAKER took his leave of this life, February 19, 1912, at Delphos, Iowa aged forty-three years. He was born in Decatur County, Iowa, to JOHN W. And MARY BAKER. His mother died in 1898. EMORY was the eighth of nine children born of the home, four brothers and four sisters. His wife and two sons, ARTHUR and LAWRENCE, are still left with the aged father, brothers and sisters to mourn his departure The obituary notes written by an acquaintance, speak of him as always kind and honest in his dealings with his fellow man.
