    2. Nancee Seifert
    3. The Journal Leon, Iowa August 9, 1883 The Narrow Gauge line to Pleasanton has been cross sectioned as far as Little River. By request of the Cainsville committee on right of way to that place the Engineer commenced his survey south and reached Fogleman's, six miles below here. He will reach Cainsville today. This enables the committee to work intelligently in regard to the right of way. The ridge route is the one selected. R. RICHARDSON is "looking out" the route south for the company. JUDSON MOFFATT killed last week a garter snake, containing 57 young ones. Mr. LILLARD, of Garden Grove, was over here last Saturday buying up dry cows (?). We thought he was trying to catch a moth, but have since been informed he prefers a Miller. Rev. HILL preached Saturday night and Sunday morning at the M.E. Church. Miss ADA WORK and NETTIE MOFFATT have gone to Leon to attend Normal. Miss VANARSDELL, of Keokuk, is visiting at her uncles, WILLIAM HALL's. A. ROY, of Leon, has been helping Mr. RICHARDSON make hay during the past week. He knows how to work as well as teach school. OWEN M. HALL has ordered a Haydock buggy from St. Louis. A cat owned by Mr. A. PARKER snatched a young chicken which he was examining and ran to her bed with it, and for several days showed the most motherly solicitude for its welfare. ------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert January 4, 2010 [email protected]

    2. Nancee Seifert
    3. The Journal Leon, Iowa August 9, 1883 The Republicans of Long Creek, we learn, will present the name of J.D. STRONG as a candidate for Supervisor for the long term, at the Republican County Convention. No better man in the county can be found for the place, being an old citizen, conversant with the duties of the office, of highest integrity and a staunch Republican. Long Creek claims this place on the ticket as it has never been represented on the Board, and for that matter any office in the county. The claims of Long Creek should be carefully considered, especially when it presents such an unexceptionable candidate. ---------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert January 4, 2010 [email protected]

    2. Nancee Seifert
    3. The Journal Leon, Iowa November 8, 1883 Des Moines, Iowa, Oct. 29. -- A gang of young forgers operating in western Iowa have doubtless been broken up by the capture of one of the principals named HENRY STANLEY at Leon, Decatur County, where he was flourishing under the name of WOODS. On the way to Atlantic, in charge of an officer, he gave away their modus operandi. There were three of the lads engaged in the business and they drew up notes and forged the names of well to do farmers to them and sold them. STANLEY disposed of the notes and received thirty per cent of the proceeds. They forged the name of two farmers near Anita to two notes for $300 and traded one to Meredith & Dickey, dealers in agricultural implements, for $100 in money and a $200 note. When arrested STANLEY had in possession on of the notes already filled out. ------------------------------------------------------------ Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert January 4, 2010 [email protected]

    1. [IADECATU] PETERS - WHARTON MARRIAGE
    2. Nancee Seifert
    3. The Journal Leon, Iowa August 30, 1883 MARRIED -- At the residence of the bride's parents, near Lamoni, J.P. PETERS and ZULU Z. WHARTON, at 11 o'clock yesterday morning. This was a grand social occasion. The friends who went from Leon on the 8:40 train were met at Bethany Junction with carriages and were thus conveyed to the elegant residence of Hon. Thos. Teale, the bride's home. At 11 o'clock music announced the approach of the contracting parties, who immediately appeared in the parlors, where everything was tastefully arranged for the occasion. The bride was draped in a beautiful white mulle, trimmed in Irish point lace. Rev. S. Johnson performed the ceremony. The friends gathered around and with mingled joy and deep feeling congratulated the bride and groom. A bountiful and elegant dinner was spread and well received. Among the friends present were Mr. Biddle and two daughters, of Moravia; Mrs J.S. Warner and son, J. Hoffhines, wife and two daughters; J.R. Bashaw, wife and daughter; Geo. T. Young and family; W.H. Robb, wife and daughter; Mrs. Sofronia Patterson, grandmother of the bride, Leon; Mrs. Mint Patterson and sons, Mercer County, Mo.; Mrs. Eugene Teale, Kellerton. The presents were grand and appropriate, and a partial list only is reported to us, as follows: Silver tea set, cake dish, knives and forks, spoons, pie knife, one clock, China tea set and many others, consisting of books, toilet articles, etc. The bride and groom left on the 2 p.m. Train for Piqua, Ohio, where they will visit with the parents and friends of the bridegroom. Mr. PETERS carries away from our midst one of our many bright young girls and were it not for the fact that we think she has fallen into good hands we would be reluctant to relinquish our claims. ------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert January 4, 2010 [email protected]

    2. Nancee Seifert
    3. The Journal Leon, Iowa August 16,1883 Seventy-four tickets were sold at this station for the Davis City picnic. Mr. RICE, of Humeston, has been taking stereoscopic views of places in town for the purpose of selling the pictures to our citizens. Mr. WOOD, who has been on JOHN VAIL's farm, has moved to town again. EVERT RUFFCORN, who has been at Marshalltown since spring returned last week on a short visit. JIM LILLARD made his first appearance in town (since his marriage) on Saturday and the way the boys made him "set 'em up" was a caution. F.E. STEARNS has moved his grain house at the depot and has set it up on his lot south of the store. We learn he is paying 18 cents per bushel for good oats. Tuesday night last week F.A. BROCK, having indulged too much in benzine, was feeling extra lonely and to liven things up he got out an old shot gun he had in the barn and went to blazing away at his family, who were at the back door. The report of the shot induced his wife and little ones to seek safety at their neighbors, and but for the timely arrival of some men who took the shooting iron from him and deposited it with the Marshall there is no telling what the result might have been. So far as we can learn no arrest has been made. S.B. KING, son of C.W. KING, of this place, returned from Valparaiso, Ind., on Saturday last, where has has just graduated a the State Normal. GEO. BAKER and Col. HEPBURN will speak in the Opera Hall Thursday and Friday evenings respectively. At the primary on Saturday the following gentlemen were chosen delegates to the county convention at Leon on Saturday, August 18th; D.C. ROSS, G.W. SHAW A.B. STEARNS, S.H. AMOS. B.E. STEARNS, BRYSON BRUCE, C.D. MALLETTE, M.V. STEWART and SYLVANUS CULVER. A melancholy and fatal accident occurred on Saturday last just north of town whereby ASA GARDNER, of Smyrna, lost his life. Mr. GARDNER had been in town making some purchases and had started for home, and when driving down the hill south of the bridge which crosses the branch of the Weldon his team, by some means started to run and it is supposed struck a stump, throwing him out of the buggy, and alighting on his head broke his neck. The team, which had got loose from the buggy was met by F.W. Briggs at the Ienson farm, who with several others, repaired to the place and found Mr. GARDNER breathing his last. Medical aid was summoned and it was found one of his arms was broken and a big gash on his head, besides the fracture of his neck. He was conveyed to his home, where he was buried on Sunday. He belonged to the Society of Friends and was highly respected by all who knew him. He was 68 years old. ------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert January 3, 2010 [email protected]

    2. Nancee Seifert
    3. The Journal Leon, Iowa August 16, 1883 As I was just thinking of Leon, concluded I would send you a few items. Old Uncle ASA GARDNER, of Smyrna, one of Clarke County's first settlers, while on his way from Garden Grove yesterday in a spring wagon, his team became frightened and ran away, threw the old gentleman out and broke his neck. Many of your readers were well acquainted with him. He leaves all who knew him to mourn his loss, for he had no enemies. He was 73 years of age and a good Christian. The farmers of this community are nearly all through with their harvesting and we hear the sound of the thresher in every direction. ENOS BALDWIN has two very sick daughters. Holland, of Osceola, and McCullock (sic), of Humeston, are waiting on them. Aside from this there is very little sickness in these parts. A grand hop in the store house of Flanagan & Perrin's last Friday night. Guess the boys didn't get very rich. "Well, how about the election," is heard quite often, and we have to tell them that W. PECK, of Decatur was nominated by acclamation for Surveyor. One motion of M.F. STOOKEY, Dr. H.R. LAYTON, of Leon, was nominated to fill the office of Coroner. On motion of J.C. GAMMILL the thanks of the Republican party of Decatur County were tendered FRANCIS VARGA for the impartial manner in which he discharged the duties of acting Chairman of the Central Committee the past year. ---------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert January 3, 2010 [email protected]

    3. The Journal Leon, Iowa August 16, 1883 MARRIED -- At Wards Hotel, Leon, Iowa, on Thursday afternoon, Aug. 9, 1883, by Rev. G.F. Degen, Mr. JAMES M. LILLARD, of this place, and Miss ELLEN E. MILLER, of Pleasanton. The happy couple, accompanied by a sister of the bride, were met at the evening train, at Garden Grove, by Mr. Ira Culver and conveyed to their home where a number of relatives and neighbors were assembled with the mother, to welcome them. On leaving the table, after partaking of an extra nice supper, sweet strains of music were heard floating on the evening air, proceeding from the Garden Grove band. After playing some fine selections in good style the gentlemen were invited to the supper table. A little social chat, some more music, and they departed with the thanks of the company. Miss MILLER was a member of Aunt LUCRETIA ARNOLD's family a number of years, by whom she is much respected, as well as by all others whose acquaintance she made. Mr. And Mrs. G.P. ARNOLD were among the guests. They received a number of nice presents. Happiness and success. Another Miss BALDWIN, at Leroy is dangerously ill of fever. Drs. Holland, of Osceola, and George McCullough, of Humeston, in attendance. A dance at Leroy, in Perrin & Flanagan's store room last Friday night, participants from Weldon and Humeston. WM. GIBSON is starting a new thresher. Those of us who attended the Normal picnic are resolved never to miss another. Weather, delightful, Grand River, placidity itself, speeches good and short, music, well, everybody went home praising the Leon choir and Mt. Ayr band. Teachers clustered around Prof. Harkness, other familiar faces were missed that we were wont to see at Normal time. Old settlers of Harrison County, Mo., and Decatur County, Iowa, are called to meet at the Davis City park on Friday, Aug. 17, 1883. Wayne County, Iowa and Mercer County, Mo., should have been included. How many will be there to renew the acquaintance of the days of "butternut," grated corn bread, stick chimneys, hounds and bull dogs? Their numbers grow less every year. 15th -- Mr. EUGENE STANLEY, of Decatur, and Miss CORALIE SHAW were married this afternoon by Rev. J.R. Cary at the residence of the bride's father, G.W SHAW. ------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert January 3, 2010 [email protected]
