Nancee, the book I have does not show a Jonathan Creek Cemetary. However it lists and shows the location of several other cemetaries that are not on our list. I assume my book shows plats from 1855-1856 time frame. There are 70 different ones shown. Larry L. McElwee Dodge City, Ks. After a little sleuthing on the Decatur Co. Website -- I see that Trullinger Cemetery might have been called Reynolds Cemetery at one time.. Several of the people mentioned in the Jonathan Creek News in 1883, are buried in this cemetery. Another excerpt of Jonathan Creek News: REV. J. COSSELIN preached to an attentive audience at the REYNOLD's School House last Sabbath. Nancee
The Journal Leon, Iowa December 27, 1883 J.W. ELSEY, of Harrison County, Mo., is stopping in this vicinity. The infant child of Mr. BROCETT, of Garden Grove, was interred at the Jonathan Creek Cemetery yesterday. Mr. TRULLINGER is slowly recovering from his severe stroke of paralysis. Miss JANE THARP is home spending a week's vacation. The sudden departure of Bro. HOGE was a surprise to many, but it is hoped that his health will soon permit his return. T.J. SILVERS has been employed by Peter Doze & Co., dealers in agricultural implements, Mt. Ayr, Iowa. TOM is one of our most enterprising young men, and no doubt will be very successful in his undertaking. J.L. PHIPPS talks of spending the holidays with relatives in Ringgold. Our nimrods are having a match hunt today to decide who shall pay the expense of a holiday feast. H.M. OWEN is giving his pupils a vacation during the holidays, while he is spending the time with his family residing in Clarke County. Mr. OWEN is the most successful teacher of which we have had the honor to be a subject, and our fellow workers will be glad to see him with us once more. We smell wedding cake. A young couple living on Jonathan Creek being tired of "single blessedness," propose traveling the remainder of life's journey in "double harness." Thanks for the info. It becomes so hard to pinpoint an area 150 years AFTER the fact. :-) I live near the Yuba River in CA and have tried, (unsuccessfully), to find THAT area on the "Yuber" where my great-great-grand, EBENEZER PRICE, dug for gold in 1849-50. Described as "Gold Run, about 30 miles north of Sacramento", I've exhausted all leads but one and have simply not taken time to check it out. It's "marked" as "Sutters Hock Farm" and is just off Hwy 99 on the way to Yuba City. You'd THINK a river or a creek or any body of water would be permanant, however, even they seem to relocate. -Sherry > [Original Message] > From: schlarbaum auto body <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Date: 1/7/2010 10:24:53 AM > Subject: Re: [IADECATU] JONATHAN CREEK, Dec. 24, 1883 > > HI: Jonathan creek area that is mentioned in these articles is west of > Garden Grove. Thanks Larry and Mac. I guess there could have been two "Jonathan Creek" 's. This one sounds more like a community while the one I remembered was, literally, a creek. And I did see it on the old plat map - thanks Mac for reminding me. I don't know how far apart they might have been, but I've long wondered about the naming. Ebenezer Price settled in Van Wert, (then either Prairie City or Florence or something like that -- I should drag out notes), prior to his service in the Civil War. I know he got the land as a patent, after his 49'er trip to California, his jaunt through Oregon, ("a nice place for a city once they get the stumps out of the streets"), and ultimately back to Iowa via Panama in 1854. His father's name was JONATHAN PRICE, and others of that family settled in the area. EBENEZER and family are buried in the Van Wert Cemetery, at least, that's where they're tombstones are. I've wondered if they were ACTUALLY buried there originally, OR, if they were later removed to there or the stones simply erected in their memory. ?? Both Ebenezer and his wife Sara have newer stones, (I suspect, but don't know for sure that Arthur E. Price, had them done), but a daughter of Sara's, Vira, from a marriage after Ebenezer had died, has an old stone right next to the newer ones. Vira was born and died, 1876-1891, and it would seem her tombstone was original to that cemetery. I'm not so sure about Eben and Saras -- though I imagine Sara, who died in 1886 was original to same. Eben had died in 1872, when my great-grandfather was only 2 years old, and I haven't found anything that says he was buried in the Van Wert Cemetery. I guess I need to find out when it was first used. Enjoying the NEW info regarding the area and also the reference, (another post), to the BULLARD property. From a family member I learned that the PRICE, BULLARD and ROBERTS families all had adjoining farmland in this "Jonathan Creek" area from the 1860's on. My great grandparents, (Ira PRICE and Isa Mae (ROBERTS/BULLARD), were born and eventually married and lived out the majority of their lives in the Van Wert area. -Sherry > To: <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> > Date: 1/7/2010 8:43:44 AM > Subject: Re: [IADECATU] JONATHAN CREEK, Oct. 12, 1883 > > Larry: is that a "know" or a "think"? back when i was up there (40s and > 50s) jonathin creek was out east of leon........out toward the high point or > corydon area......we used to get chubs out of there for bait.....mac > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Larry McElwee" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> > Sent: Wednesday, January 06, 2010 8:10 PM > Subject: Re: [IADECATU] JONATHAN CREEK, Oct. 12, 1883 > > > > Jonathan Creek was east of Van Wert. The Journal Leon, Iowa December 13, 1883 As I passed through the streets of your fair little city, I beheld such a sign as excited my pity, Joe Guzzler it was, lying low in the gutter, And this was the substance of what he did uttter. I am what I am, and I be what I be, And how I came here, I will tell you said he, The error I made, the mistake of my life, Was thinking and acting and voting for wife. The kindest and best she always was to me, On Temperance only, we didn't agree. I thought it meant taking a little at a time, And she thought e'en tasting or touching a crime. I acted for both, and I voted "Saloon," That I might have a little at morn, night and noon. I am where I am, and I be what I be, And how it all happ'd I've told you, said he. Not a syllable more he seemed able to utter, He turned himself o'er and he snoozed in the gutter. Don't you think 'twould be better for both in the future, If wife did the voting and Joe were a neuter? I disfranchise the man that's a drunkard, I would, And enfranchise his wife in his place, if I could. Give Woman the ballot, and trust to her skill, In weilding it wisely and with a WILL. Old Alcohol's kingdom would soon come to grief, And woman, the sufferer, find sudden relief. Treaters and treated grow scarcer, you bet, Saloons would be few -- they'd find nothing to get. Joe Guzzlers might thus be redeemed, through their wives, And lead from the tempter, lead temperate lives. -- Leon, Iowa PLEBIAN ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert January 7, 2010 [email protected] It doesn't take much to amuse me -- and "Joe were a neuter?" -- cracked me up..
The Journal Leon, Iowa December 13, 1883 Our citizens were startled yesterday morning by the report that FRANK SAMSON aged 20 years, son of Rev. SETH SAMSON, of Franklin Township, had committed suicide by cutting his throat, while in a state of insanity. The facts are bad enough, but not so bad as that. It appears that young SAMSON, who, until the last month, had been blessed with splendid health, and was a fine specimen of manhood, physically and mentally, became so unwell that he gave up the school he commenced about two weeks ago, and returned home on Saturday last, and has since been confined to the home. Tuesday evening about half past six o'clock, while his father and John Barrickman were in the room with him, he insisted on going out a few moments. They tried to persuade him not to, but he insisted so strongly that they consented. As soon as he had gone out Barrickman followed. As he opened the door he saw SAMSON bound over the front fence, without touching it, and start up the road. -- Barrickman followed, but could not catch up with him until he had run to Bullard's nearly a mile. As R. Came up SAMSON struck at him a knife, and had some trouble in warding off his blows. SAMSON's father came up when he struck at him, and finding him in such a state of frenzy, they were compelled to knock him down and take the knife from him. All the time he was contending with them he was cutting at his throat, and succeeded in cutting quite a gash on the left side, partially cutting the wind pipe. He used a large sized pocket knife, the blade being about three inches long and rather dull. Dr. Layton was up to see him yesterday, and he has no doubt SAMSON will recover from the injuries to his throat. The many friends of Mr. SAMSON and family in the county will learn this with regret, but feel thankful that he has not injured himself seriously, and sincerely hope that his mind will soon be restored to his former strength. ----------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert January 7, 2010 [email protected]

The Journal Leon, Iowa November 8, 1883 BENJAMIN HAWKINS was born in Fayette County, Ky., the 11th day of August, 1815. In the year 1833 he moved to Bartholomew County, Ind. On the 26th day of December he was married to MARY ELIZABETH J. GRAVES. In September, 1849 he moved to Davis County, Iowa. In September, 1852, he moved to Decatur County and settled on a farm 5 miles east of Leon, where he died October 7th, 1883, being 68 years, 1 month and 26 days old.
