The Journal Leon, Iowa August 16, 1883 ~~NORMAL~~ SCHOOL HOUSE, LEON, IOWA, Friday, Aug. 17, 1883. Institute was called to order by Prof. SAMSON. On motion Mr. HASTY was elected chairman and Mrs. CRICHFIELD secretary. The opening exercises consisted of music by the choir and prayer by Rev. Johnson, followed by another song by the choir. Miss ELLA COMLEY then read an essay, the subject being "Our Work," in which she portrayed the responsibilities devolving on the teacher. The product showed careful preparation and contained some excellent thoughts. We were then entertained by a comical recitation from Mr. FLANAGAN called The Irishman," who surely displayed mother wit in the execution, and not had logic in the composition. Mr. CORNELL's paper set forth the more modern idea that education should not be confined to intellectual culture alone, but urged that the physical and moral natures should be attended to as well as the intellectual, as "No education is worth the cost, if gained at the expense of health," and, 'tis no detriment to positions of fame, either intellectually or politically, in verification of which fact he cited us to Milton, Gladstone and Garfield. "A Tribute to Howard Payne" was recited by Miss MAY WILSON. Our minds were prepared for this rendition by the music set to his beautiful ballad "Home, Sweet Home." The choir sang one more song and there being no further business before the house the Institute adjourned. --T.J. The Journal Leon, Iowa August 30, 1883 MARRIED -- At the M.E. Parsonage in Leon, A.A. PRATT and Miss LEONA SHINN, both of Ord, Nebraska. A romance is connected with the above marriage. It was a runaway match, the bride being a cousin of MITCHELL, Esq., of Osceola, who received a dispatch to have them married. Sadly: ** Leon Reporter, Leon, Iowa Thursday, December l, l898 The saddest event known in this vicinity for a long time was the death of MRS. DAYKIN, wife of SAM T. DAYKIN, which took place Sunday night at l0 o clock, after much suffering. It is proper to say the attending physicians did not deem a surgical operation necessary and there was none. The funeral was held at the Free Methodist Church of which she was a member, at 3 p.m., Monday, conducted by Rev. Eaton, the Pastor. It was largely attended. MRS. MARY DAYKIN, the deceased, was the daughter of MRS. THOS. HONN, who nursed her in her last sickness. She was 39 years of age and was born in Decatur County, Iowa. By her death eight small children are left motherless and all know how pitiful is the condition of motherless children. The youngest of them is a babe two weeks old, now kindly cared for by MRS. BEESON. The father is unable to care for his little flock and must part with all but two little boys. The baby will be sent to the orphan's home at Council Bluffs. --Imogene; correspondence In Shenandoah World. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert "With permission from the Leon Journal Reporter" December l0, 2002 * I cannot, in my heart, understand why these children had to be given away. So nice to have such wonderful family information... I have the USDA Map and looked it over with a magnifying glass to see if I could find Cherry Creek.. There are some small streams running off Cobbville Creek -- and I'd bet that they called one of them Cherry Creek. No proof though. As I couldn't find Cherry Creek listed on the map.. thanx, larry.......was just curious. as i recalled it was about halfway to the weldon river. wouldn't've even caught my attention but i plan to hit that new lake over there past the weldon river, that they just built within the last 10 years or so......think they call it "rathbun"....and think it might've been the "weldon" that they dammed up.....anyway, kind of thought i'd stop by that crick and get me some chubs first.....mac ----- Original Message ----- From: "Larry McElwee" <[email protected]> To: "Decatur" <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, January 07, 2010 11:00 AM Subject: [IADECATU] Jonathan Creek > Mac, My map shows several branches off of Jonathan creek that are not > identified, Some of thm do run east of leon. > Larry L. Hello, I find this all very interesting but, have a question concerning the map by USDA. In sections 1,2, and 3 of Center township there is a creek listed as Cobbville Creek. This runs through the land purchased by my great-great grandparents, L.M. and Anna Kob, in section 1 of Center Twp. The community was named Kobville by Leo W. Duffield...L.M and Anna's grandson. On their 50th Anniversary in 1907 their daughter Jemima wrote about L.M and Anna coming to Iowa and purchasing this farm----- "Passed down main street of Garden Grove town, and seven miles south-west they settled down. On some rented land their first crop was grown, but they very soon bought a farm of their own. 'Twas timber and brush, and some prairie too, and a creek called Cherry running right through. Down at the 'run' a spring was found, That furnished water to all around." So, is that creek Cherry or Cobbville??? We've always known of it as Cherry Creek. Just curious. HI: Jonathan creek area that is mentioned in these articles is west of Garden Grove. The first river bridge is the Weldon River the second River bridge ( approx. 3 miles ) is the Jonathan River bridge. The Jonathan creek community was between what we know as J20 south to hiway # 2 west of Highpoint .(approx. 2.5 miles west of Highpoint) at which it runs into the weldon river. In Highpoint twp. there is 3 cemeterys Highpoint,Trullinger & Mc Allister. Reynolds & McAllister schools are. usually mentioned. We have to remember that a lot of the farms in this area were 40s & 80s (acres) I was raised in this area, my what a lot of interesting history & folk lore. The Jonathan Creek cemetery mentioned was probably the McAllister cemetery. This cemetery is located in Highpoint twp. it is back in a field with a marker on the road naming it the McCullough Cemetery. Hope this helps. net> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, January 07, 2010 11:20 AM Subject: [IADECATU] JONATHAN CREEK, Dec. 24, 1883 > The Journal > Leon, Iowa > December 27, 1883 > > J.W. Always... I've looked for the burial of a BROCETT child and can't find any; there is a George Brocket family in High Point in the 1885 census.. Her name is Sarah.. I totally agree with the attitude of women being less important than their husbands...
