I will be in Davis County on my way to the east coast in late September and will be trying to locate information on my ancestors, Margaret A. Barker, b. c 1821, who lived in Davis Co. (recorded on the 1856 census) with her children, Arah (fem.), b. 1838; William, b. 1841; Melissa A., b. 1845; Elizabeth, b. 1849, and Sarah, b. 1852. Records show that all the above were born in Virginia, as well as Margaret's husband, Ephraim. Since Ephraim is not listed on the 1856 Davis Co. census, but is listed on the 1850 census for Ritchie County, West Virginia, it is possible he had died between 1850 and 1856. The family apparently arrived in Davis County in about 1854. While I would be delighted to receive any data on the above, my present request is for suggestions as to where in Davis County I should go to try to locate information on the family while I'm there. Was there a newspaper in the late 1850's; if so, would microfilm copies be available, and where? Where would I go to locate land records? Were marriages recorded at that time (Margaret may have remarried) and if so, where would those records be found? Any historical or genealogical societies whom I should contact either by mail beforehand, or while I am there? Thanks for any tips which might save me time and frustration when I arrive.
