They have county road signs up now. Box 6798 Frazier Park, CA 93222 Hi Linda, My great grandfather's sister, Sarah Catherine married Lewis Powers in the 1870's in Davis Co. She was the daughter of Calvin and Susan Baker Francis who are listed as family #166, Stiles, Grove Twp., Davis Co. in the 1870 U.S. census. Maybe there is some connection. I have never done much research on the Power/Powers family. Pat Rogers Hall in Vista, CA

    3. Start at the Bloomfield Library - genealogy room. The library is located just north of the Post Office. They have a lot of obits already itemized from 1886 on up. Also actual papers - please be careful of these because they tear real easy. If you can not find an item in any of those papers you can try the newspaper office. You will be surprised at all you can find at the library though. The records for birth, death and marriages are kept at the courthouse in the recorders office. They are great gals in there and very happy to help. If you have time you can go up to Ottumwa and check out the Historical Center located at the old railroad depot, 210 West Main. They have a great genealogy department there also. While you are in the court house be sure to take a tour of the rest of the building. The court house is a real treasure for it's time. Also check out the other buildings around town as this is a very old town. There is a welcome center on Hwy 63 just a few blocks north of the square. They sell items made by local folks here and some made by the Amish. Be sure to ask for a map of the different little shops that the Amish have and what they have to sell. I'm sure you will enjoy yourself in Bloomfield and Davis County as well as Ottumwa in Wapello County. Enjoy your trip - Linda

    3. Faith, Bloomfield is the county seat. There's a big "Ginger Bread" courthouse in the middle of the square. The library is a block or two to the west, you will probably find more there than in the CH. 1. [IADAVIS-L] History of Davis County
    2. Hi ~ hoping that someone may have access (or know how I could get access to..) the following book: "The History of Davis County, Iowa", written 1882. It mentions an ancestor of mine (Job Carter) being one of the original 8 settlers of Salt Creek. Would love to read it and find out what else there may be about the family. Thanks. Sherre

    1. [IADAVIS-L] BARKER
    2. Margaret E. Udell
    3. I will be in Davis County on my way to the east coast in late September and will be trying to locate information on my ancestors, Margaret A. Barker, b. c 1821, who lived in Davis Co. (recorded on the 1856 census) with her children, Arah (fem.), b. 1838; William, b. 1841; Melissa A., b. 1845; Elizabeth, b. 1849, and Sarah, b. 1852. Records show that all the above were born in Virginia, as well as Margaret's husband, Ephraim. Since Ephraim is not listed on the 1856 Davis Co. census, but is listed on the 1850 census for Ritchie County, West Virginia, it is possible he had died between 1850 and 1856. The family apparently arrived in Davis County in about 1854. While I would be delighted to receive any data on the above, my present request is for suggestions as to where in Davis County I should go to try to locate information on the family while I'm there. Was there a newspaper in the late 1850's; if so, would microfilm copies be available, and where? Where would I go to locate land records? Were marriages recorded at that time (Margaret may have remarried) and if so, where would those records be found? Any historical or genealogical societies whom I should contact either by mail beforehand, or while I am there? Thanks for any tips which might save me time and frustration when I arrive.
