Deborah, Thank you for your note re: Samuel Duncan Wells from Bloomfield. I have a fax machine, but it's not a dedicated line, and we'd have to coordinate a time when you could send it so I would be sure to have the machine hooked up. I rarely use it any more. I believe I could download jpg files if you can get them scanned. If that's too much of a hassle, snail mail would be great. I'll be happy to reimburse you for your expenses. This is exciting. Thanks again. Jim in CA
Dear Deborah, May I impose upon you? I am waiting an answer from the Davis County Genealogy Society also. I will appreciate your kind help.....thank you, Rita Ormsby ABNER ORMSBEE - ORMSBY died 28 Dec 1864...also have date 1865 in Bloomfield, Davis, IA. Stage Driver, from Keosauqua, VanBuren Another of his ancestors said he was buried in Purdom Cemetery in Keosauqua but no record has been found, although his wife Mary J. Saunders, who died some time later, 01 Oct 1895 Bentonsport, is buried in Purdom Cemetery..have a picture of the stone. It was told that Abner was also on the stone, but he is not. ....he may be buried in Bloomfield, where he died. He drove the stage from Van Buren County to Davis County...was also a Veteran of the War of 1812.
I found a lengthy two page artical for Samuel D. Wells, from a book about DC published 1924-1927 by a group of ladies. Do you have a fax #, or if I scan this, can you read jpeg. files, or what do you prefer, snail mail?
I am "unpuzzling" the Stevick/Stevig family of Davis Co., IA for a STEVICK single-surname project I am working on. Branches of this family, I believe, wound up in IL and WA. Affiliated surnames I have found include: CRAM MILLER TRACHSEL McCULLEY KINSINGER If you have information to share or need a look-up, please e-mail me. ~Dawnette Thompson e-mail: RBNGDFELLO@AOL.COM http://www.geocities.com/heartland/meadows/7894/stevssp.html Home of the STEVICK and HOLLOPETER Single-Surname Projects
Don't find a William Boon in the 1882 History. There is a Dr J.H. BOONE who was one of the first settlers of Bloomfield. There was an earlier History of Davis Co, Iowa for sale on ebay, I think it closed today. there were quite a few bidding on it and the last time I looked the price was $51.00. I do have some other books that I had bought in Des Monies and I can go a quick search for BOON when I have the time. Maria Subject: Re: RE: [IADAVIS-L] History of Davis County > Can some one with a copy of that History look up William and Polly Ann > Boon(e) who lived there around 1860-1877? Can some one with a copy of that History look up William and Polly Ann Boon(e) who lived there around 1860-1877? I would be interested to know what information there is in that History about them. (I am especially interested in any information about William Boon's background and ancestry.) Thanks, Charnee Smit, his great-granddaughter
Deborah, My gggrandfather, Samuel Duncan Wells (d: in January, 1892) and his wife Matilda Brunk Wells lived in Bloomfield, Davis County, IA. They both died and were buried in Bloomfield. My ggrandfather, Pleasant Wells was born in that town and later moved to Santa Rosa, CA where he died. Does the Wells family show up in your History of Davis County? I would appreciate any information you are able to find on Samuel, his parents, etc., and his children. Thanks for your help. Jim in CA
History of Davis County 1882. Pg. 599 Salt creek twnshp was first settled by James H. Jordan,Van Caldwell, Jesse Testament, Job Carter, William Higgins, Henry Smith, John Tollman, Peter Woods, and others, in 1837 and 1838. Pg. 416 Job Carter for $5, was given the exclusive ferry privileges, at the place where the "Territorial Road" from Ia. City, Ia, to Jefferson City, Mo, crosses the Des Moines River, and his rates for ferriage were ordered to be, 3cts to 12 1/2 cents depending of wether man and / or horse, / wagons, cattle/ sheep or hogs crossed. The great wolf hunter of Davis county, was Joseph Carter, who was paid $4 for killing wolves, in 1844, receiving the first bounty paid by Davis county. He became quite celebrated, in those days, as a wolf and deer hunter. Pioneers of Salt Creek Twnshp, 1924-1927, wrote by a woman's group. Pg. 31 Perhaps the first man with a family to locate in Salt Creek twnshp was Joe Carter who with his wife and several children came from Virginia in 1836 and located upon vesser creek. During the high water in 1851 Carter undertook to swim across the wide river bottom from the bluffs to the distillery at Blackhawk and was drowned. pg.32 Blackhawk, Ia an early day, was quite a noted village. It had stores, a blacksmith shop, a mill, and the famous A. J. Davis distillery. It was mostly in Van Buren county. It was famous for horse races, shooting matches, gander pullings, and sometimes fist fights. One occasion Boler Dotson struck Joe Carter over the head with his gun, bending the barrel of the gun, arddenting Joe's skull. This was the Joe Carter that afterwards shot and killed Bill Drake. I also found this- Job Carter 1839-1909 Co D 17 Ia Inf Bethlehem Cemetery lot 69

With regard to Daniel Moyer, born in NC & resided in Davis County.... I don't know how much help I'll be, but I have a VERY sketchy outline of this family. One of Daniel Moyer's descendants, his daughter Mary Jane, married into my McClurg family line. Also, it appears that Daniel's full name may be "George Daniel Moyer" and the information pertaining to him is in #4 (4th generation) below. Have you considered checking Appanoose County? My ancestors always considered themselves Davis Co. residents even though at times they were technically located in neighboring Appanoose. The same can also be said of Schuyler Co., MO. At one time, my grandparents lived in both states at once...most of the land was in MO & the house was in IA! Anyway, I decided to take a look at my Appanoose Co. stuff because William Henry McClurg, who married Mary Jane Moyer, is buried in Gregory-Kerby Cemetery. He lived in Davis Co., but the cemetery is in Appanoose...less than 1/2 mile from the Davis County Line. There are a couple of Moyer burials in this cemetery as well. Want to thank all of you who sent me info on Bloomfield, and surrounding areas. Will be a lot of fun retracing some of my families steps. Faith
Thank you for this information. I'm happy to have ANYTHING on Daniel. I have just discovered he was the brother to my great great grandfather Paul Nathan from NC to Orange Co. IN to Edgar Co. IL. I would like to know anything you can find. Where in IN was Gabriel Heady born? Any chance he traveled from the MOYER stop in Orange Co. IN? A large group of MOYER, MOCK, BROTHER, FESTERMAN, PIPPEN (my great great grandmother's line) moved from Cabarrus Co. NC to Orange Co. IN, then to Edgar Co. IL and some to Pike Co. IL. Then some went to MO and Daniel to Iowa. Hard to imagine that much travel back then. I feel so lucky today. I just began this search..now I have your information. I also just received this: From: "Karen Jarvis" <karenj@kdsi.net> THE 1882 HISTORY OF DAVIS COUNTY IOWA : The town of Monterey, in this township, was laid off and surveyed March 14, 1851, by J. W> Ellis, county surveyor, and is located on the nw qr of the ne qr of section 33, township 68, range 15; on land originally belonging to Daniel Moyer. It has a post-office, and does quite a large business, and is one of the oldest towns in the county. This is all the book mentions about any Moyer. Karen --------- So this is probably where your relative lived. Where are you..do you live in Iowa? I'm in Indiana. Thanks again for your data. Please..If you find ANYTHING else..let me know!!
