    1. The Rev. Henry Bishop and family
    2. Mary Jane Anderson
    3. In 1872, my great great grandfather, The Rev. Henry Bishop (1815-?) was in Elvira where he had been called to be pastor of a Lutheran Church there. His wife was Elizabeth Augusta Humrickhouse Bishop. Both were in their mid to late 50s. He wrote out his autobiography in longhand. Both the Bishops were born in Virginia, in the portion of the state that is now West Virginia. Over the years since his graduation from the Lutheran Seminary in Gettysburg, PA, he pastored to churches in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Maryland. The Bishops had 6 children who lived to adulthood: Albert Luther (1842-1874), Ann Elisabeth (William R.), William Melancthon (1844-?), Maria Virginia (William A.) Warner (1847-?), Mary Augusta (1851-?), Harry Macron (1853-?). Maria Virginia and William A. Warner were married at the church at Elvira on May 16, 1872. Harry Macron married Mary Jane Porter across the river in Rock Island in 1875. They had 3 children and then he disappeared, some time after 1881. I would welcome help in figuring out whether Elisabeth and Henry died in Clinton County, or whether he accepted another pastorate and moved elsewhere. Since I have his family Bible, and the journal, which came to me through Mary Jane Porter Bishop's oldest daughter, I'm guessing that they died there. I've checked cemetery records that are online for Clinton and Scott counties, unsuccessfully. I was unable to locate them in Center Twp. in the 1870 or 1880 censuses. I'd like to know more about the church where he was pastor. What is called the Elvira Zion Lutheran Church was not the only Lutheran Church in Zion, I think. Henry would have been affiliated with an English Lutheran Church. Can anyone tell me which one it was? If I can figure that out I'll be able to call and make an appointment to learn what records they have when I come over to Iowa a week from tomorrow. Does anyone know anything else about this family? Or can you suggest other paths I might explore? Mary Jane Anderson Mailto:[email protected]
