I surfed NARA (Nationa Archives & Records Administration) websites for anything re emigration records. I called my nephew who I consider better than I am at this and also called a good friend who is a city archivist in Rhode Island. Nothing! You might try contacting local area gene societies in the San Francisco area (San Francisco county) for any assistance they can provide. And let's use this scenario. A ship leaves S.F. and heads for Hawaii, does it's thing there and continues it's journey. If it goes directly to Australia, it will show up in your records as coming from Hawaii, not San Fran. If it makes other stops enroute, it may be shown as arriving from it's last port. You could be looking for Clinton co. folks arriving on a ship coming out of Bangkok, Thailand. Another thing, these were not cruise ships, or even passenger ships. They were mostly cargo vessels and i! f the left a U.S. port with freight, they may have carried passengers if space were available. And working backwards, An Australian ship leaving the states will carry passengers rather than travel back to Australia empty. Dick
