In tracing my Pier line, I found my gr-gr-grandmother, Melissa Williams Pier, living with Gideon Alonzo Russell and Emeline Kellogg Russell in Lyons, Clinton Co in 1878 when she applied for a pension (on her deceased husband Major George Pier, War 1812). In the pension she states she was living with her son-in-law Gideon Russell, age 50 and her cousin Emaline (Emeline) Kellogg Russell, age 44. Son-in-law and cousin puzzled me until I found Gideon and Emeline in the 1880 Census CDs with 4 children, (Fanny b abt 1863, Fred b abt 1867; Linn b abt 1876; Gertrude b abt 1879) 2 of whom had been born long before Gideon and Emeline were married (1874)! I'm sure Gideon must have married Melissa's dau Mary (for whom I have only a birth date), had 2 children, then Mary died and he later married Emeline. I have no record of this marriage or Mary's death. This must all have happened in Cooperstown, Otsego County NY, as that is where Gideon married Emeline, who was, in fact, a cousin through Melissa's Kellogg mother. My big problem right now is that, according to the 1880 CDs, Melissa is not living with Gideon and Emeline (she died 21 July 1888). Her son Edwin lived in Corning, Steuben Co NY, his son Erastus, in Bath, Steuben County. Perhaps Melissa was with one of them in 1880? But oh my goodness, neither Edwin nor Erastus are in the 1880 CDs! They must have been there, for her younger brother Isaac K. Williams wrote (Freeman's Journal, Cooperstown) when Edwin died (6/23/87) ""the mother who has received his kind care for years past, lingers in her 89th year." I haven't yet had a chance to check the actual 1880 census, but Melissa, Edwin and Erastus must be there somewhere! Meantime, does anyone have any connection thru Gideon Russell's descendants which might help clear up this puzzle? TIA Jean Chapman Snow Sherman Oaks, CA
Dear Clinton Mail List, My husband's great-grandmother Nettie Anderson grew up on Beaver Island at Clinton, Iowa. I am trying to figure out where this island is located in relation to the town of Clinton. It doesn't show up on Mapquest. In the 1900 census Nettie was living on 15th Avenue in the City of Clinton, 4th precinct, E.D. 11. Was this street on Beaver Island in 1900? Also, does anyone know where I can find a map of Beaver Island? Thank you so much for your help. Sincerely, Katherine Bellingham, WA
In 1872, my great great grandfather, The Rev. Henry Bishop (1815-?) was in Elvira where he had been called to be pastor of a Lutheran Church there. His wife was Elizabeth Augusta Humrickhouse Bishop. Both were in their mid to late 50s. He wrote out his autobiography in longhand. Both the Bishops were born in Virginia, in the portion of the state that is now West Virginia. Over the years since his graduation from the Lutheran Seminary in Gettysburg, PA, he pastored to churches in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Maryland. The Bishops had 6 children who lived to adulthood: Albert Luther (1842-1874), Ann Elisabeth (William R.), William Melancthon (1844-?), Maria Virginia (William A.) Warner (1847-?), Mary Augusta (1851-?), Harry Macron (1853-?). Maria Virginia and William A. Warner were married at the church at Elvira on May 16, 1872. Harry Macron married Mary Jane Porter across the river in Rock Island in 1875. They had 3 children and then he disappeared, some time after 1881. I would welcome help in figuring out whether Elisabeth and Henry died in Clinton County, or whether he accepted another pastorate and moved elsewhere. Since I have his family Bible, and the journal, which came to me through Mary Jane Porter Bishop's oldest daughter, I'm guessing that they died there. I've checked cemetery records that are online for Clinton and Scott counties, unsuccessfully. I was unable to locate them in Center Twp. in the 1870 or 1880 censuses. I'd like to know more about the church where he was pastor. What is called the Elvira Zion Lutheran Church was not the only Lutheran Church in Zion, I think. Henry would have been affiliated with an English Lutheran Church. Can anyone tell me which one it was? If I can figure that out I'll be able to call and make an appointment to learn what records they have when I come over to Iowa a week from tomorrow. Does anyone know anything else about this family? Or can you suggest other paths I might explore? Mary Jane Anderson Mailto:[email protected]

Hello Everyone: I have a few announcements then you can get down to some serious football <grin> We have set up the IAGenWeb message boards so that messages posted there will also come to the list. I know that Phyllis is going to repost many of her obits to these message boards that she previously posted on the Ancestry.com boards so there may be quite a few to start off with, but after that expect a few emails a week or so, about the same as the Ancestry boards. For those of you who may be aware of the IAGenWeb boards, the url is http://iagenweb.org/boards/clinton/queries/index.cgi -- check them out, lots of great stuff here. Also, Dick alerted me to the fact that those of you with home.com email addresses will have new email addresses soon. Here is how to change your email address with Ancestry.com and at our IAGenWeb message boards. If you need your email changed for items, such as family outlines, that you have posted to our website, please let me know and I'll change them there also. At Ancestry.com -- Changing your e-mail address, name, or password is accomplished in one easy step by clicking on the 'My Profile' link. Complete any changes in the 'Change My Information' or 'Change My Password' boxes and click 'Submit'. Your account information is changed universally. (Please note that I do not have any control over this. This is something you have to do yourself. And if I remember correctly, you must do this Before your email address changes as you will have to answer a confirmation email.) With a name like George Johnson it's like looking for a needle in a haystack. In a article we have from the Des Moines Register dated Feb 8, 1919, Lieut. O.P. (Opie) Johnson was the first Des Moines Ace to return home. He was visiting his sister, Mrs. Ben Winterrowd at 3311 Rollins Ave. "Johnson has five boche planes to his credit. He was one of 100 Americans brigaded with the British, in the wing commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Bishop, premier British Ace. He's a former Drake University man and holds a "quarter mile" record at that institution." In Oliver's SSN application he lists his parents as George F. Johnson and Margaret Pruett. He was born Feb 5, 1895 in what appears to be Paragould, Arkansas. Other information we have indicates that it was his employer, Goodyear Tire and Rubber that had him transferred to Phoenix, Maricopa County, AZ to work as a manager of a cotton gin and cottonseed oil mill. He married Nelle (nee Usher) Blalock from Kentucky. She was the daughter of Leona Maria Farthing and William Allan Usher. Although I haven't found anything on how or where they met. If any of this sounds familiar feel free to email me directly. Thank you.

Dean Passes to His Reward on Tuesday December 22d We are again called upon to mourn the loss of one of our time honored citizens, who, though the spirit has been wafted to a more friendly port, will long be remembered for his many acts of charity and patriotism. Horace F. Dean answered to the final summons on the morning of Tuesday, December 22d, 1908. Though it was quite generally understood, by those nearest and dearest to him, that the end was close at hand and that the light of life which, for the past six weeks have been flickering, was soon to go out the news of his peaceful death was received with sorrow by those who learned to love him during his life time. Deceased was born in Mariah, Essex County, New York on Dec 2nd, 1838, and before having attained his majority came west and located on a farm in eastern Iowa. He enlisted in the Union Army in August 1862 with Co. H, 26th Iowa Infantry and was during his services as a soldier, promoted to 4th sergeant and later to that of 1st sergeant. From an examination of his army record we find him to have been a soldier of honor and distinction. He was honorably discharged June 6th, 1865. Returning to Clinton county at the close of the war, he was on Nov. 8th, 1865, united in marriage to Electa Pelham, and together they fought the battle of life until seven years ago when the wife and mother was called to her reward. In 1873 the family moved to West Side, Crawford county, and twenty years later, in 1893, came to Dunlap, where he continued to reside up to the time of his death. To this union were born nine children, seven of whom survive.

He first landed in Lyons, where he followed his trade till 1857 when he purchased the farm 1-1/2 miles east of Malone, moved onto it and made the tilling of the soil his life work and was very successful. Sunday morning, Feb. 2d, at 9:45, he passed quietly and gently to the spirit land. Although deprived of speech his mind was clear, recognizing all that came to see him till the end came. Hello Everyone: Now that I'm done shoveling, I have time to write a line or two. Our chat last night with Cay Merryman regarding research at the LDS Family History Center went very well. She was a great guest. Next week, I hope to see all of you there -- our topic will be Volunteers! We need 'em and You got 'em -- Seriously, the chat will be about how you might be able to help the website. If you've ever thought about volunteering, now you can find out just what we need done and what you might be able to do to help. I would really like to visit with each of you and answer your questions and hear your ideas. A big reason I'm doing this chat topic is because I've gotten a new scanner -- Yeh! I would like to scan things and have volunteers to type the info up. I would like to do the 1929 Clinton city directory to serve as a bit of an index to the 1930 census. I have uploaded several family outlines sent in by Mike Kearney. He has also been posting many, many obituaries to our message boards. Thank you so much Mike, your hard work is appreciated. You might know that I also coordinate the Iowa Orphaned Treasures project. I recently received 49 photos from a lady in Texas who bought a photo album at an antique shop. The photos are mostly from Davenport, Princeton, Malcom and Brooklyn Iowa. There is one from Toronto tho, of an unidentified woman (#40), also one of the identified photos is of a Metzar - that name sounds familiar for some reason. Some of the other surnames are Marlin, Finlon, Kirkpatrick and Schmalz. I hope you can find time to check them out.
