Good Morning Everyone: Happy Mother's Day to all us wonderful moms!! We have added some great stuff to the Clinton website -- Fran has typed up through the I's on the 1929 directory. Richard sent us a wonderful photo of a business in Lyons of the Becker family. And we have the diary of John Klar online. He was the first pastor for St. Paul's in Wheatland. There is some great info in it. Check the What's New page for links. On a more serious note -- because of all the nasty viruses (viri?) going around from email, I am deleting many emails without opening the files. If you send me an attachment with no note explaining the file, I will probably delete your email. I'm sorry to say, I just can't risk the infection. It would be a great idea to send a second email asking if I got the file you sent. Well, I will let you all go and enjoy the day -- Take Care -- The More We Share, The More We Have To Share Nettie Mae Clinton County Iowa Gen Web www.rootsweb.com/~iaclinto/ Clinton County, IAGenWeb Archives Table of Contents http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ia/clinton/clinton.htm www.rootsweb.com/~iaphotos/ IA State Census Project www.iagenweb.org/census/

Surnames: Fritcher, Cave Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Qk.2ADI/2067 Message Board Post: I am attempting to prove details concerning Lydia E. Fritcher, b. abt 1866 in Illinois, daughter of William Henry Fritcher and Margaret Ann Springer. We know Lydia married a Mr. Cave. Is she the Liddie Edith who married to Arthur Dellno Cave? Arthur D. Cave with wife Liddie E. is enumerated in the 1900 Spring Valley twp, Dallas Co, Iowa census. Also there are children Ora and Nathan Cave. If I am tracing the right family they are found in these Iowa locations: Dallas Co. – Lydia there with her parents in 1880 census, and then perhaps with husband in 1900. Clinton Co. – Lydia Cave lived at Toronto, at sometime Cedar Co. – there is a Liddie, Arthur, and Ora Cave buried in Massillon Cemetery. The tombstone reading shows that Liddie Cave died in 1913. Does anyone know where Lydia/Liddie Fritcher married (Arthur?) Cave? You may email me at [email protected]
Jean, I don't know why the message bounced back to you because I also received it! Same email address. I am appending below the message I sent to you with the original information and source (I'm such an email packrat so I still had it!). As I reread it, I think the "Mararoneck, NY" was where Fred was living at the time the magazine was published in 1917, and not where he was born. (I copied it verbatim from the magazine.) The birth year is probably correct. Jessica ----------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 7 Feb 2002 10:28:01 -0800 (PST) From: Jessica Utts <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Russell & Pier Resent-Date: Thu, 7 Feb 2002 11:26:11 -0700 Resent-From: [email protected] Jean, I can't answer your question but I can tell you that Gideon Alonzo Russell was one of the descendants of Gideon Howland, who was wealthy and famous for leaving an odd will. He left his money to be divided among his descendants, but only after being used by his neice Hetty Green during her lifetime. It was big news in the early 1900s when Hetty died, and there was a recent article in the New Yorker about this. She is in the Guinness Book of World Records = greatest miser! I have a copy of the Massachusetts Magazine, April-July 1917, which lists all 439 of Gideon Howland's heirs, who got a piece of the inheritance then. Gideon Alonzo Russell is there with the following (he was my step-great-grandmother's brother, somehow all of the material on this got passed along to me!): ------------------------------------- 16. Gideon Alonzo Russell (son of Gideon Russell), (born 1828, died 1915) lived at Lyons, Ia, where he was a manufacturer of sash, doors and blinds and became wealthy. He was twice married, his second wife, Emeline W. Kellogg, still living. Three children died without issue, one died leaving children and three are still living and inherit: 185. Fannie J. (Russell) Furman (born 1863); married Alonzo Furman and lives at Lyons, IA. Her children: 569. Russell Furman, Spirit Lake, IA 570. Alfred K. Furman, Lyons, IA 571. Gertrude E., Lyons, IA 186. Fred A. Russell, (born 1866), Mamaroneck, NY 187. Lynn K. Russell (born 1876), Clinton, IA 188. Gertrued E. (Russell) Alban (born 1878); married Frank W. Alban and lives at Marshalltown, IA; no children. ---------------------
Does anyone have a current e-mail address for Jessica? I used the one she had in Feb '02, but my e-mail (following) was returned. Subject: Mary Pier Russell's children Dear Jessica: Thanks to the leg up you gave me on Gideon Russell and his children, I've come a long way. I've found that, as I had guessed, Mary Pier was his first wife (can send you all the data, if you'd like) and they had 5 children, two of whom lived to be stepchildren to Emeline. I'm wondering about your source for the birth date of Fred A. Russell, whom you have as b. in Mamaroneck NY (Westchester County - I grew up near there, so am familiar with the town). That birth place seems a bit unlikely, as the other children (and I found that Mary and Gideon had five of their own) were born in Iowa, according to census records. I've been in touch with the ClintonCounty/Gateway Genealogical Society (they have a web site now according to RootsWeb) and they sent me several photocopied pages of Wolfe's History of Clinton County which has a photo of Gideon and quite a full biography (which does have a couple of mistakes in dates). Wolfe says that Fred A. Russell was a well-known author and lived in NY. Perhaps Mamaroneck was where he lived and (presumably) died (I've been checking out Contemporary Authors at my library for a speech, and I must go back to see if Fred is listed. That would be interesting to know). Anyway, if you'd like to have what I've found, I'll send it to you. I leave for Salt Lake City this Thursday, so may not be able to until after I return on the 20th. Cheers! Jean

I thought you might be interested in the info I get regarding our search engine -- We get about 30-50 visitors to our site every day. They did over 1800 searches during the month of April. I have added a list to the bottom of this email of the most common words searched for. If you see names that interest you, there is nothing we can do now to find out who the searcher was. I kind of thought this info might help to make you aware of how important putting info online could be for you in your research. The Clinton site is always glad to post family outlines, photos, or other materials you may have collected about Clinton and your ancestors. That is the whole point of our site -- to share the info we have collected and, hopefully, connect with others who are researching similar interests. Hello Everyone: Great news on the census cds -- Heritage Quest is having a buy 3 get 2 free sale and we have enough money to buy 3!! Thank you to everyone who contributed. I hope to order the cds tomorrow or Monday. We have been working at getting more info online. JoAn Hoffman has been busy typing marriages and we now have over 1700 marriages online and there are still many pages I have to add yet! Thank you so much JoAn. We have started the Farmer's directory from the 1925 atlas and have Center and Waterford Townships online. Other new things include an index to obits and memorials for 2001, an index to "Lyons -- 150 Years North of the Big Tree" and wills indexed up through K. I was wondering if you all would help me compile a bibliography for Clinton county. If you have any information on printed resources for Clinton, please let me know and I'll add that information to our site. I have made quite a few changes to Clinton's homepage. I hope this will cut down on broken links. Take care and enjoy your search.
