    1. Things 'n Stuff
    2. Hello Everyone: Here's wishing you an early happy and safe 4th of July. We have added some new things to our website. The 1929 Clinton City directory is completely online, thanks to Frannie B. who has been typing away, non-stop. We've added Elk River and Deep Creek townships to the 1925 Atlas' Farmer's Directory. We have added some wonderful cemetery photos to the Tombstone Photo Gallery and last, but certainly not least, Camilla has shared with us burial info from the Kelly Funeral Home. All these items can be reached from the 'What's New' page on our website. Also, I'd like to mention two neat sites I've come across: The first is GenWriters at http://www.genwriters.com/index.html. If you have ever thought about writing something regarding your family, check out this site. The second site is at http://www.ku.edu/history/VL/USA/ERAS/19C.html I'm not sure if it has a name, I got there doing a search for something. This page has links some really wonderful info. Everything from the Monroe Doctrine to diaries written about trips on the Oregon Trail can be found here. I was totally amazed at the number of links that I didn't recognize and the amount of information offered by some of these sites -- and I only got about a quarter of the way down the page before I had to stop and fix dinner! It really is worth a visit. Well, I'm off to enjoy the peace and quite before the fireworks begin. Take care and enjoy the weekend. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Qk.2ADI/2030.1.1.1.2.1 Message Board Post: The best place would be right in the courthouse in Clinton county. The next best thing would be the Iowa State Historical Society in Des Moines. They have tons of records. The next best thing, especially if you can't get to Iowa is the nearest Family History center. From there, ,they will help you find what you need to look at, which would be land records, church records, etc. Of course, they won't have the records themselves right there, but they will most likely have some sort of index to the recors that have been microfilmed and stored in Salt Lake City, Utah. You'd be able to order what you think you need. I think the cost is about $2.75 per microfilm. It'll take at least a week to get the film. Sometimes longer, depending on how many copies they have and if someone else has ordered it and using it. They should have more than one copy. You might not find what you need on one microfilm. You may have to eventually order others, but their index is good. I would start there if you are unable to get to Des Moines at least. Be sure to check wills and or probate records. Any record you could think of that might give some sort of clue. There could have been a copy of a will from another state leaving him or another family member something, which might give a clue. I'm looking at the 1850 census now. I'm assuming the family your're talking about is Sarah A., John R., Henry, Nancy, and a James Scott enumerated with them? Who is James Scott, do you know? Maybe you should email me direct. Might be better than a hundred posts on here. [email protected]

I found a Nancy Thomas married Johm Spaulding (presume that's an error, most like John?) on July 21, 1853 in Clinton county. I'm still trying to find something. I would think there would have to be a record of some type where it switched the ownership of that piece of land you were mentioning. I wish I could get to Iowa to do some research for myself, I'd see what I could find for you. I live in Minnesota, so it's not that far for me. It's just getting the time to do it.

I have a map showing where he owned land but nothing on how he acquired it. The 1879 History of Clinton County Iowa by Allen indicates how his father in-law acquired land but nothing about how John acquired his. His father in-law may have given it to him but I have not evidence of that. Dana Thomas

I will pursue the VA GenWeb search engine. However, my John Thomas was born between 1813-1815 according to census records so he was too young for the marriages you suggested I look into. His wife (Mary Ann Turner) was from New Brunswick so it is unlikely his marriage occurred in Virginia. John's first daughter, Nancy, was born in Ohio, presumably on the way to Iowa. I have looked for Nancy Thomas' birth record (1837) in Ohio but have not had any luck to date. Please let me know if you have any further advice.

I have a copy of a map showing John Thomas' land in Clinton County, Iowa. However, I have not been able to find out how he came by that land. John arrived in Clinton Co., with his father in-law, George Turner. The "History of Clinton County Iowa" by L. P. Allen written in 1879 indicates how George Turner acquired land but nothing about how John did. Turner may have given the land to John and his daughter but I have not been able to find such a record.

His original land record MIGHT have an indication of where he came from. Sometimes, a man would travel to an area and buy land before moving his family there and it could say that John Doe from such and such county, state of, etc. for example. But sounds like you've already tried that. I've got something else to do right now, but I'll get back to you. Not sure how I can help, but I have a couple ideas.

I am not sure how to do that. Any guidance would be appreciated. Since posting this original message, I have found land documents in Iowa concerning John Thomas and have found information confirming his first wife's surname was Turner (daughter of George Turner). I received help from the Clinton County, Iowa historical society with this. In addition, census information indicates that John was from Virginia and his father was from Pennsylvania. That is all I have to date.
