    3. Would any of you all on the Clinton County mail list have naything like this for Steve? If so please contact him directly. Thanks, John Schulte Clinton County Coordinator iagenwebcc@isp.com -----Original Message----- From: Steve Ellis [mailto:meadowbrookdairy@yahoo.com] Sent: Saturday, February 18, 2006 12:48 PM To: iagenwebcc@isp.com Subject: Tourist camp in Wheatland, any pictures of it? Dear Sir/Madam: I have been lucky enough to to come across the trip journal a great aunt of mine kept on a journey she took in (I think) 1924 from New Brunswick in eastern Canada to Tacoma Wa. It involved 3000 miles in a Model T Ford, with 95% of the roads being gravel, and no a.c. in the summer heat, and not even any roll up windows! They passed Clinton County, and she mentioned staying overnight at a "tourist camp" in Wheatland. In fact, they stayed at tourist camps every night. I am not exactly sure, but I think they were sort of combination campgrounds and areas that had little cabins for rent. Of course big cities had hotels as they always have, but these tourist camps are the foreunners, I think, of today's motels and todays RV parks. That is my guess, but you may know more. I think, from what I can gather, they were following the old Lincoln Highway, which is what Old US 30 is now. I imagine, back in 1924 especially, Wheatland was a tiny community, and they would only have one tourist camp. I am sure that the "tourist camp" has been out of businsess for decades, but I wonder if you have any information about it or about when it operated. I have been lucky enough to get a picture e-mailed to me of the actual tourist camp in Oregon where Aunt Annie and Uncle Elmer stayed in on this trip 1924. If you have have information or old photos of Wheatland or anything along that highway, I would enjoy them enormously. Thanks very much. Sincerely, Steve Ellis Cordele, Georgia

    3. Bonnie, Assuming I have the right Mitchell Collins, in 1880 Clinton he is enumerated as born Eng of Irish parental nativity. In 1870 Clinton, Mitchel (one L) is also enumerated as born Eng. In 1880 Clinton is a J. Scofield, retired saw mill man & wife Ann, both born NY. In 1870 Jerome Scofield, lumber dealer, & wife Ann, both NY, are in Dubuque in Dubuque co. In 1880 Prentice Holmes is in Clinton as born NY with Ct. parental nativities. In 1850 Madison co, NY is 14 y/o Prentice Holmes, born NY. with parents Edward & Melissa both born Ct. Same place in 1860 are Melissa & son Prentice 23. Dick May you live to be a hundred, with an extra year to repent! I have yet to learn which county in Northern Ireland Collins came and thought locating Holmes and Scofield could shed some light. ³Oath of, Prentice Holmes & Jerome Scofield, two credible witnesses he has resided with in the United States ever since 1859 and more than 5 years and within the state of Iowa more than 1 year and that for 3 years past, it has been his bona fide intention to become a citizen of the U.S. of America.² Bonnie

    3. David, Probably posting something out on the Clinton County Queries section might help,or this mail list might be of some help as well. Can anyone help David? Thanks, John Schulte Clinton County Coordinator iagenwebcc@isp.com -----Original Message----- From: David Trenkamp [mailto:David.Trenkamp@iowawish.org] Sent: Tuesday, January 17, 2006 1:19 PM To: iagenwebcc@isp.com Subject: Suggestions from Clinton County My name is David Trenkamp and I grew up in the Sugar Creek area. My great grand father, Henri John Trenkamp, immigrated from Germany and settled in the Lyons area sometime in the 1870's. He married a Caroline Ahlars and they had 4 children. I'm not sure when they moved to the Sugar Creek area but the farm where I grew up was purchased by my grand father and great grand father in the early 1900's. My brother runs the farm so it has been in our family 3 generations. I was looking for something else and saw your website so I thought I would contact you. The Sugar Creek parish was established in 1855 and I'm trying to find information on how I can get it recorded as a historical site. Any hints. Thanks.

    3. For anyone who was interested or wondering, I called the Clinton County Recorder's Office today and asked them about the Power of Attorney records. They said that they were held there at the recorder's office and would need to be viewed there. They said I couldn't request copies, so I just need to figure out some way to have someone check them out for me. Anyway...just FYI. Thanks, and take care! 3. Judy, As if you don't have enough problems, the 1930 census for the Harry E. & Marie Bennet in the 3rd ward of Clinton lists Wilbur as the youngest of 10 older sibs and either 4 or 6 mos. old on a hard to decipher small print. Census was dated April 26. I wasn't aware that Iowa required only a notary to request these records. Might want to check a couple more sources to verify that. A birth notification back then could have appeared anywhere in the newspaper. Obtaining the record from the state may be your best shot although if you know their religious affiliation you might try for baptismal records. Dick (P.S. My mom was 39 when I was born but I won't tell you what those Iowa hog farmers called those babies.) May you live to be a hundred, with an extra year to repent! So, maybe, she could have squeezed in 2 more! Incredible!
