Helen, Birkholz may have been in Colesburg before 1895. The 1900 census says he emigrated to the US in about 1873, but I can't find him on the 1880 census anywhere or on the 1885 Iowa State census. The first time I find him 'officially' is in 1895. Even if he was already in Colesburg by 1880 (and missed on the census) and took the photo at that time, the man pictured sure looks to be younger than 54 (the age John S. in the bio would have been). Of course this is only my opinion, and I could be wrong, so don't take my words as gospel by any means. I hope you get some additional replies to your query.
