(UP) - Beloit college was shocked today by announcement of the unexpected death last night of its president, Irving Maurer, 63 at a Rochester, Minn., hospital where he was said to have gone for a routine physical checkup and hernia operation. Dr. Maurer gave up the pastorate of the First Congregational church at Columbus, Ohio, to become president of Beloit college in January, 1924. Previously he had held the pastorates of famed Edwards church in Northampton, Mass., and Plymouth church in utica, N.Y., achieving a national reputation as a speaker on religious and lay topics. Born at Garnavillo, Ia., Sept. 2, 1879, Maurer received a Bachelor's degree from Beloit college in 1904, BD and MA degrees from Yale Divinity school in 1909, a Doctor of Divinity degree from Carleton college, Northfield, Minn., and an LLD from Wooster college, Ohio, in 1924; a DD from Oberlin in 1925, and an LLD from Colorado college in 1933. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Minnie Leona Vogt Maurer; two sons, Irving Jr., at home; Lloyd Luther, New York, N.Y.; and two daughters, Mrs. Sterline Skinner, Beloit; and Mrs. R.M.
