She was born February 24, 1904, in Westerhorn, Germany, to Heinrich and Clara Wilhelmine (Lundie) Hahn. Paula was baptized, confirmed, and graduated from school in Hornerkirchen, Germany. September 16, 1923, she was united in marriage to Johannes Mangels at Hornerkirchen. One daughter, Irene Clara, was born to this union. Johannes came to America in October of 1923 and Paula followed on December 1, 1923, arriving at Ellis Island. She took a train to Chicago and Monona, arriving in Monona December 15, 1923. She worked for Lloyd Bronson for two years to pay him back for her ticket to America. John and Paula farmed in McGregor and later bought a farm in Forest Mills, Franklin Township, where they continued to farm. John died January 12, 1958, as a result of a heart attack. Paula moved to Monona January 1, 1960. Paula loved to garden, quilt, embroider, make rugs, play cards, dance, and attend auctions, big dinners, and gatherings. Survivors include two grandchildren, Dean Allan (Sue) Engelhardt of Fairfax Station, Va., and Julie Ann (Dave) Schulte of Dorchester; five great-grandchildren, James Engelhardt, Benjamin Schulte, Nicole Schulte, Matthew Schulte, and Michael Schulte. Paula was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Irene (Vernis) Engelhardt; one sister, Erna Sommer; and four brothers, Walter Hahn, Willie Hahn, Robert Hahn, and Heinrich Hahn. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 22, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, with Rev. Allen Bidne officiating. Burial was in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Monona. Leonard Funeral Home, Monona, was in charge of arrangements. Casketbearers were Bernard Bromelkamp, Keith Jones, Alan Johnson, Dave Presteman, Sidney Horns, and Ron Grady. Honorary casketbearers were Paulas great-grandchildren, James Engelhardt, Benjamin Schulte, Nicole Schulte, Matthew Schulte, and Michael Schulte. Waukon Standard, April 26, 2006
