He received his education in the rural school near the farm and on June 5th, 1929, was united in marriage to Sylvia Walter. They assisted his parents on the farm until they moved to Osborne where he engaged in contruction work. He was inducted into the service of his country at Ft. Dodge, Ia., May 3, 1944. From there he was sent to Camp Roberts, California, where he received training for five months. After a ten day furlough spent with his family at Elkader, he was sent to Camp Patrick Henry, Virginia, and from there overseas. He served in Italy for 11 months, serving in the North Apennines and the Po Valley. He was awarded two bronze stars for campaigns, a combat infantryman's badge, the good conduct medal, one overseas bar and also the European-African Middle Eastern Theatre campaign ribbon, being discharged from the service at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri on October 13, 1945. The 2_th of October a car in which he was riding between Monona and Farmersburg skidded when it struck loose gravel and overturned, killing him instantly. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia, and four children, Margaret, 15, Dale aged 10, Robert 5, and Phyllis of 14 months. Also surviving are his father and mother, one sister, Grace (Mrs. Henry Kamaus of West Union), two brothers Lyle of Gaylesburg, Illinois and Merle, recently discharged from the service, at home. *************************************************************************** This is an automatically-generated notice.
