Ward 103 of McGregor, IA died Tuesday January 3, 2006 at the Great River Care Center following a short illness. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday January 7, 2006 at the United Methodist Church with burial in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, both in McGregor. Friends may call on Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home in McGregor and one hour prior to services at the church. Clara is survived by one daughter: Nelda (Elmer) Hedeman of McGregor, IA; 9 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, 7 great,great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was born July 9, 1902 to Christian and Ella Miersen at New Vienna, IA. She grew up in the Dyersville and Strawberry Point area. She married Cecil Wheeler on February 7, 1922 and moved to McGregor. They had three children: Cecil Richard, Jr., Neil Clair (Pat), Nelda Mae (Wheeler) Hedeman. She later married Frederick “Earl” Ward on March 17, 1949. Clara worked as a housekeeper for many years in McGregor. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. Clara loved her flowers and feeding the birds. She was also one of the “best” cooks in the area.
