The time of her earthly pilgrimage being 77 years, 5 months and 9 days. Christine Kohlermann was born Dec. 3rd, 1844 at Ueberroda, near Eisenach Germany. There her childhood and school days were spent, Having grown up to womanhood she was united in marriage with Adam Walther, in August 1868. Fifteen years later the family came to America, and for a few years made their home in Clermont, Elgin, and Mederville, until they moved to Elkader in 1886. Here the family remained, and Mr. Walther worked at his trade as wagon-maker. It was indeed a shock to the family when on August 4th, 1906, the husband and father was suddenly summoned out of this world; a stroke being the cause of his death. For a while Mrs. Walther remained in her home, but after all her children had married and had established homes of their own, she finally decided to give up housekeeping and spend the remaining years with her children. They were ever willing and ready to give the very best to mother. Perhaps she did not always fully realize this, but she could not help being convinced, that there was a hearty welcome and a good home with any and with all of her children. They surely have done what they could. More they could not do; less they would not do. Since October of last year, she has stayed at the Charles Huebner home, Postville, Iowa. Two weeks ago, a family reunion was held at the L.D. Smith home, near Elkader. Grandma Walther was happy in the midst of her children and grand-children. About a week later she was stricken with pneumonia. Everything possible, that loving children can do and will do, was done to prolong the life of mother. But God had willed it otherwise. After having partaken of the Lord’s Supper, and being conscious to the very last, she peacefully closed her eyes in the last sleep on Friday evening, a few minutes after eight o’clock. The departure of a beloved mother is mourned by six children: Mrs. Anna Huebner, Postville, Ia. Mrs. Emilie Stallbaum, Dubuque, Iowa. Mrs. Mary Falb, Elgin, Iowa. Mrs. Linna Smith, Elkader, Iowa. William Walther, Elkader, Iowa Mrs. Emma Schultz, Postville, Iowa. She also leaves 17 grand-children, 6 of whom acted as pallbearers; 7 great-grandchildren, one brother in Germany, other relatives and many old-time friends, who will miss her in the days to come. Seven of the smaller grandchildren followed the casket with bouquets. She was a faithful member of the Evangelical church and the Frauen-Verein, and would attend services and meetings whenever she was able to do so. Services were held at 1:30, Monday afternoon of the home of her son Wm. Walther here in Elkader and at 2:00 o’clock at the Evangelical church, with interment on the East Side cemetery, Rev. C.H.
