Durr - IA Ge DATE: 7/9/2010 at 10:35:58 Surnames: BEKNER,EVANS,SENNER,MATHISON,RAINER,PAINE Funeral services for Robert Evans were held Monday, May 2, 1983 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, with Pastor Harold O. Ward officiating. Burial was in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Schultz's Funeral Home was in charge of services. Robert Lincoln Evans, the son of Abraham Lincoln and Lillie Mae Bekner Evans, was born February 4, 1908 at Maynard, Iowa. He attended country school and graduated from Maynard High School. In 1931 he graduated from Upper Iowa University with a degree in chemistry. He was a teacher for a number of years in Randalia, Iowa. He received his Masters Degree in Education from the State University of Iowa in 1938. He served as a teacher and Superintendent of Schools in the Fredericksburg, Luana and Postville Communities. Robert obtained business experience as manager of the Farmer's Co-Op Commission Company and Hill Hardware in Postville. In 1950 he purchased Pape and Fox Hardware in Monona, which he owned until his retirement in 1979. He was united in marriage to Florence L. Senner on August 2, 1933 at Hawkeye, Iowa. To this union two daughters were born. He died April 29, 1983 at Lutheran Hospital, LaCrosse, Wisconsin, after an extended illness, having reached the age of 75 years, 2 months, 25 days. Preceding him in death were his parents, a brother Carlton and a sister Viola. Robert was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, he was interested and active in civic activities. He helped organize Area I Vocational School (NITI) of which he was President of the Board for eight years. He served on the Board of Monona Housing, the Monona City Council and Monona Enterprises. He was a member of the Commercial Club, the Masonic Lodge and the Kiwanis Club. He is survived by his wife, Florence, his two daughters, Mrs. Trygve (Karan) Mathison of Holmen, Wisconsin and Mrs. Brian (Gloria) Rainer of Champaign, Illinois, two grandchildren, Brent and Sarah Mathison, a brother Frank of Sebring, Florida and a sister, Ruth Paine of Evanston, Illinois.
