Durr - IAGen DATE: 4/26/2010 at 11:18:21 Surnames: GAYLORD,LUSTER,TIPTON,SCHELLSMIDT,ECHARD Funeral Services Held for Harry Luster Funeral services for Harry Clarence Luster, 63, were held Monday afternoon, June 28, at 2 o'clock at the First United Methodist church of Monona with Rev. Raymond Pacholke officiating. The body lay in state at the church from 1 o'clock p.m. until the time of the services. Burial was in the Rossville cemetery with military rites conducted at the grave by the American Legion and Amvets posts. Mr. Luster was taken to Veterans Administration hospital in Iowa City, Feb. 28, and on March 2 he underwent surgery for a brain tumor. He was transferred to the Prairie du Chien Convalescent Center, May 25, where he died Thursday morning, June 24. He was born a son of John and Olive Gaylord Luster, Sept. 3, 1907, at Harpers Ferry. He was baptized into the United Methodist church and was a member of the Monona First United Methodist church. He attended Fairview Township school in Allamakee county. He served in the army during World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 519 of Monona. He was married to Geraldine Tipton at Sigourney, March 6, 1946. Preceding him in death were a son, Donald, who died in infancy; his father; and two brothers, John of Harpers Ferry, and Minor of Caro, Mich. Those left to remember him include his wife, Geraldine; one son, Harry Jr. (Susan) Luster and one granddaughter, Dawn Denise Luster of Charleston Heights, S. C.; one daughter, Norma Jean Luster at home; his mother, Mrs. Olive Luster of Monona; two sisters, Mrs. Clem (Violetta) Schellsmidt of McGregor; and Mrs. Fernette Echard of Monona; two brothers, Earl of Marquette and Robert of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews. Nephews serving as pallbearers were Harland, Ernest, John, James and Charles Luster, and Donald Rissman. He died Tuesday, May 17, 1994 in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa. He was 73. He attended the Grand Meadow country school and was graduated from Postville High School in 1938. On Nov. 26, 1949 he was married to Mary Downey in St. Patrick's Catholic Church at Monona, Iowa. To this union, four children were born. They farmed on the family place in Grand Meadow Township until 1975, when they moved to their present home on the south edge of Postville. Ray and Mary operated their own feed business for five years. Ray was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church in Postville and had served on the parish council. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Ray will be remembered as a loving and generous husband and father, and as an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He is preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Edward E., Kenneth, Ambrose and James. Surviving are his wife, Mary; his children, Stan (LuAnn) Looney of Postville, Jim (Karen) Looney of Luana, Kathy (Kevin) Stanford of Cedar Rapids and Marty (Annette) Looney of Marion; five grandchildren; his aunt, Eleanor Koether of Giard; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral mass was held Friday, May 20, 1994, in St. Bridget Catholic Church, Postville, with the Rev. Roger L. Katz officiating. Becoming critically ill about two weeks ago, he was taken by Rescue Squad, to the hospital in Prairie du Chien, Wisc., where he passed away. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Laura. Funeral services were conducted at the Thornburg Funeral Home, by Rev. Paxton Smith on Thurs. Sept. 2, with burial in the Giard Cemetery. Durr - IAGen DATE: 4/26/2010 at 11:03:58 Surnames: HANNEMANN,KIENBAUM,LEMBKE Mrs. John Lembke, the former Bertha Amanda Augusta Hannemann, was born April 26, 1892 in Marathon county, near Berlin, Wisconsin, the daughter of Ferdinand Hannemann and Bertha Kienbaum. She was baptized in the Lutheran Church at Berlin on May 5, 1892. When she was a child, the family moved to Ramona, South Dakota. She attended the rural schools there. On April 8, 1906 she was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. John Lutheran Church, Ramona. On June 4, 1914 she was united in marriage with John A. Lembke at Ramona. After their marriage, they farmed north of Monona for 22 years and then moved to a farm north of Luana where they lived for 20 years. About 10 years ago they left the farm, and since then Mrs. Lembke helped care for many people who needed help. Recently she had been helping in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Merrill Baade, in Luana. She became ill suddenly on Friday morning, was taken to the hospital, where she passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 74 years, 11 months, and 21 days. Mrs. Lembke had been a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Luana, and the Women of the Church. Surviving are her husband, John; one daughter, Mrs. Merrill Baade of Luana; one son, Oscar Lembke of Decorah; one sister, Mrs. Robert (Anna) Borchardt of Madison, South Dakota; seven grandchildren, including Lester Baade who is serving in the Navy in Turkey; and five great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents; two sisters, Mrs. Henry (Martha) Thurow and Mrs. Albert (Olga) Borchardt. Funeral services were held at St. John Lutheran Church, Luana, on Wednesday, April 19, the Rev. R. E. Langholz, Monona, officiating. Burial was in St. John Lutheran cemetery, Luana. Mr. Looney, a lifelong resident of this community, had been ailing for about 10 years, being bedridden since June 10. Funeral services will be conducted in St. Bridget's Catholic church in this city Thursday morning at 9:30 o'clock, with the Rev. Francis Vallaster officiating, and interment will be in the Catholic cemetery at Monona. Six nephews will act as pallbearers. Mr. Looney was born in Grand Meadow township, Clayton county, June 23, 1891, as the son of Thomas and Julia Colliton Looney. He received his early education in the schools of that township and later attended the business college in Oelwein. He was united in marriage with Miss Helen McKernan on March 4, 1924, in St. Bridget's church, their marriage being the first official act here of the late Rev. P. Hogan. Six children were born to this union, all of whom, together with their mother, survive. They are Kathleen, a registered nurse at Peoria, Ill., Dorothy of Minneapolis, Minn., Jack, Donna, Julie and Carol at home. Also surviving are five sisters and one brother, Hannah, Mrs. Matt Reiter; Mayme, Mrs. Christ Cavanaugh; Grace, Mrs. Clem Dunn; Rose, Mrs. Walter Delaney, and Miss Estelle Looney, all of Waterloo; and Ed Looney, who lives on the home farm in Grand Meadow township. His parents and one brother, John, passed away a number of years ago. Mr. Looney, who was a pioneer hybrid seed corn dealer in this community for the DeKalb company, followed farming all of his lifetime. He and Mrs. Looney first lived on a farm near Farmersburg for a year; then for 14 years they lived near Elkader, and about 12 years ago moved to the Herman Webb farm east of town where they have been living since. They farmed in Grand Meadow Township until they moved to Postville in 1949. She is preceded in death by her husband; a son, Edward E. Looney; and a sister, Mrs. Gilbert (Christine) Meyer. Looney, 57, were held Wednesday, May 7, 1980 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Postville with the Reverend A. A. McAvoy officiating. Schutte Funeral service was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in St. Patrick's Cemetery at Monona. Casket bearers were his nine nephews. Monday, May 5, at the Larkin-Martin Funeral Home, New Hampton, rosaries in charge of the Rosary Society and Knights of Columbus, were said. A Parish Scripture Wake Service was held at 8:30 p.m. Kenneth John Looney was born Oct. 18, 1922, the son of Edward A. and Evelyn A. (Henkes) Looney in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County, Iowa. He died May 4, 1980 at St. Joseph's Hospital in New Hampton. He graduated from the Postville Community School in 1941. For the past 17 years he operated Ken's Barber Shop in New Hampton along with one in Frederika for several years. Mr. Looney served in the military during WW II. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church in New Hampton, the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. Preceding him in death were his parents, and a brother, Edward E. Looney. Pallbearers were grandchildren of Julia Levenhagen. Burial was in St. Patrick's Catholic Church cemetery. Schultz's Funeral Home, Monona, was in charge of services. Julia Levenhagen was born November 4, 1905, in Monona, Iowa, to parents James and Sophia Licht Scannell. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Monona. She received her education in country school and St. Patrick's Catholic School. On April 10, 1923 Julia was united in marriage to Paul Elmer Levenhagen at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Monona. To this union six children were born. The couple farmed near Monona until retiring to their home in Monona. Julia died Sunday, June 14, 1992 at the Great River Care Center in McGregor, Iowa. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Paul, who died September 4, 1983; three brothers, John, Julius and Emmett; two sisters, Agnes Klatt and Mary Scannell, and two grandsons. Surviving are two sons: Rev. Robert Levenhagen of McGregor and James Levenhagen of Medford, WI; four daughters, Mrs. William (Frances) Apfel and Mrs. Allen (Betty Jean) Lawson of LaCrosse, WI, Mrs. Virgil (Mary Lou) Thompson of Monona, and Mrs. William (Anna Mae) Petermeier of Watertown, MN; twenty-nine grandchildren; 47 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and one sister, Ann Orr of Monona. The couple farmed on the home farm in Grand Meadow township until the fall of 1949 when they retired and moved to Postville. Lange, daughter of William and Sophia (Gottachalk) Seeland, was born June 9, 1910 near St. Olaf, Iowa. She died Sunday, April 16, 1995 at Central Community Hospital, Elkader, Iowa. She was 84 years old. She was raised and educated in the area attending rural schools. She was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center, Iowa, and confirmed in 1923 at the Evangelical Reformed Church, Elkader. She was united in marriage to Ralph Wolfe in May of 1929. She later married Leland W. Lange in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on December 9, 1936. Mabel worked several years at Muters Speaker Plant in Guttenberg, and later at Pedretti's Bakery in Elkader. Mabel and Leland spent their married life together farming the family farm. Mabel belonged to Peace United Church of Christ, St. Olaf Senior Citizens, and Who's Who Secret Pal Club. She enjoyed dancing, driving her car, and being with her family. Mabel was active until her death. She is survived by her daughter, Betty Jean (Don) Minkler of Cedar Rapids; her son, ValDean (Pat) Lange of Elkader; seven grandchildren, Nancy Latta, Bill Minkler, Dean Minkler, Deb Sylvester, Dawn Lange, Kent Lange and Kurt Lange; thirteen great-grandchildren, Mike, Candy, Nichole, Kristi, Shane, Monica, Matt, Tiffany, Ryan, Melissa, Elizabeth, Tyler and Autumn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leland, who died in 1975, her parents, a sister, Ruby Fox, and a brother, Lester Seeland.
