J. Bittner Received news of Sudden Death of Daughter This Morning. Louis J. Bittner received a telegram at 1 o’clock this morning that his daughter, Mrs. Clara Bittner Prandy, had died suddenly at her home in Dubuque. Mr. and Mrs. Bittner, and a sister, Mrs. George Zentner, left at once for Dubuque in response to the message. Mrs. Prandy was born in 1877 in Guttenberg, and came with her parents to Bellevue when she was four years of age. She was united in marriage to T. J. Prandy who preceded her to the grave several years ago. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ben Benninger of Freeport, Ill., and Miss Blanche of Dubuque; three brothers and two sisters, Otto Bittner of York, Penn., Mrs. George Zentner of Bellevue, Mrs. L. W. Wirtz of Dubuque, Grover and Chester Bittner of Bellevue. She is also survived by her father, Louis J. Bittner and her stepmother, Mrs. Mary Bittner. Funeral services will be held Thursday morning in Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 19, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Guttenberg, with the Rev. Harold McMillin officiating. Burial will be in Friedlein Cemetery, rural Millville. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 18, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 207 S. First, Guttenberg. Friends also may call after 9:30 a.m. Monday at church. He was born on May 1, 1917, on the family farm near Millville, son of William and Louisa (Geick) Behrend. He was baptized on Oct. 31, 1927, by the Rev. R.R. Belter and made affirmation of his Baptism on March 29, 1931, by the Rev. James Sopko. Francis attended Friedlein School in rural Millville and graduated from the Guttenberg High School in 1935. After graduation, he taught one year at the Friedlein School and then went on to farm the family farm for years. That farm will become a Century Farm this year. He married Ida Mae Heins on Sept. 24, 1947, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. This union was blessed with two children. Francis and Ida Mae farmed together until her death in 2000. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Guttenberg, the Farm Bureau and the Northeast Iowa Antique Association. He was very active in the church for most of his life. He served faithfully on the church council and committees for many years and late in life volunteered to be a steward to distribute Holy Communion to shut-ins. Francis' interests included woodworking, genealogy (authored several books), attending auctions, following Iowa Hawkeye football, basketball and Chicago Cubs games, Civil War and World War II history, fishing and spending time with family and friends. His memory will be forever cherished by his children, Bob Behrend, of Colesburg, and Patricia (Walter) Loukota, of Cedar Rapids; and his grandchildren, Ryan Loukota, of Tucson, Ariz., and Kristen Loukota, of Iowa City. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Alvina Anderegg; and his three brothers, Herbert, Wilmer and Elmo Behrend. Dubuque Telegraph Herald, April 17, 2010. August 28, 1957, he was married to June Lestina of Monona, IA, at St. Bridget Catholic Church, Postville. The couple lived in Waterloo where he worked for the Carnation Company. In 1961 they purchased a business in Clayton Center where they lived until 1979 when they moved to Prairie du Chien, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers, Edward, Kenneth and Ambrose. He is survived by his wife, June, Prairie du Chien; two sons, Timothy, of Prairie du Chien, and Todd, of Winona, MN; a daughter, Lisa, of Austin, MN; four grandchildren, and one brother Raymond, of Postville, IA. The couple lived in Farmersburg and Mesa, AZ. Joyce died at St. Luke's Hospital in Tempe, AZ Saturday, Feb. 27, 1988. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and American Legion Post 388, St. Olaf, Iowa Preceding her in death were her parents and one brother, Harold Kruse. Surviving is her husband, Duane; two stepsons, Terry Lubbers, Elkader and William Lubbers, Dubuque; 4 step grandchildren; 2 brothers, Harvey Kruse, Palm Desert, CA, Harry Kruse, Rotondo West, FL; and 3 sisters, Marjorie Gerard, Stuart, FL, Margaret Kruse, Chicago, IL and Marilyn Schoenfeldt, Farmersburg. She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, Sylvester, her daughter and son, son-in-law, Charles Bender, daughter-in-law, Janice Schlein Lotza and three grandchildren: Lyle and Larry Bender and Deborah Lotza. Her two brothers, Raymond and Lawrence, and one sister, Florence Lucas, many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, LeRoy. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters: Anna, Louise Kahle and Mary Gilster; five brothers: Fred, John, William, Ernest and Louis. She is survived by nieces and nephews.
