VOGT 1888-1976 Funeral services for Arthur Henry Vogt, 87, were held Friday, February 27, 1976. at Zion Lutheran Church at Clayton Center. Burial was in the new Clayton Center Cemetery. The Rev. John H. Zerhusen, pastor, officiated. Vogt died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1976. at Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien, Wis. He had been ill for two weeks with arterio-sclerosis. A son of Frederick and Lena Vullgraf Vogt, he was born on a farm in Read Township on December 23, 1888. He was a resident of Read Township his entire life. In later years he lived at the hotel in Elkader in the winter and returned to his farm in the summer. Beginning in 1970 he made his home with his nephew in Clayton Center for four years. In October 1974 he moved to the Great River Care Center in McGregor. Arthur Vogt was preceded in death by his parents and sisters: Mrs. Fred (Ella) Lahrs, Mrs. Louis (Adele) Radloff, Mrs. George (Linda) Kelpien, Mrs. Ed (Ina) Glawe, Mrs. Paul (Leona) Haverland; a half sister, Marion and a brother, Fred. Surviving is one half-sister, Mrs. Theodore (Lillian) Glawe, Elkader, and the following nieces and nephews: Mrs. Arno (Mabel) Heuer, Freddie Lahrs, Annice Halverson, Mrs. Edmund (Ruby) Kadlec, Rueben Glawe. Mrs. Floyd (Ora) Schroeder, Mrs. Fred (Ilene) Stendel, Mrs. Gwendolyn Stendel, Mrs. Avron (Marrionette) Oleson and Mrs. James (Donna) Courtney. Arthur Vogt was baptized June 23, 1889 at Zion Lutheran Church by the Rev. F. H. Seifert. He was confirmed on April 5, 1903 by the same pastor. Among the people attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Schultz, Postville; Mrs. Alvin Volgt, Elkader; Mrs. Lanida Miller, Farmersburg. Pallbearers were: Reuben Glawe, Floyd Schroeder, Edmund Kadlec, Freddie Lahrs, Fleet Peake and Carl Meyer. The Rev. J. H. Zerhusen, pastor, officiated. Vogt died Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader obstructive heart failure. A son of Frederick and Line Vullgraf Vogt, he was born on a Read Township farm on October 17, 1883. He spent his entire life in the township o of his birth. Early in this century he moved from the farm into the village of Clayton Center. He never married. J. H. Zerhusen officiating. Burial was in the Clayton Center cemetery. Mrs. Kelpien died Thursday evening, Sept. 18, in Memorial Hospital at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, where she had been for over two weeks following a stroke. She was born Linda Louise Vogt near Clayton Center on April 12, 1885, and spent her entire life in Read township and Elkader. She was a daughter of the late Fred and Lena Vullgraf Vogt. On December 13, 1995, she was married at the home of her parents to George Kelpien. With her husband, she lived on a Read township farm until 1937, when they retired and moved to their home in Elkader. Mr. and Mrs. Kelpien celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Dec. 13, 1955. Bedies her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Arno Heuer of Garnavillo and on granddaughter, Marleen; two brothers, Fred and Arthur Vogt, both of Elkader; three sisters, Mrs. Fred Lahrs, Mrs. Louis Radloff and Mrs. Paul Haverland, all of Elkader, and one half-sister, Mrs. Theodore Glawe, also of Elkader. Mrs. Kelpien was a member of the Zion Ladies Aid at Clayton Center. She was baptized July 26, 1885, by the Rev. F. W. Seifert and was also confirmed by him on March 26, 1899. Pallbearers were Carlys Best, Floyd Schroeder, Reuben Glawe, Keith Meyer, Eddie Kadlec and Freddie Stendel. When he was 11 months old, he came to this country with his parents. They first lived near Garnavillo and later moved to a farm south of Luana. As a young man, he not only helped with the work on the farm but also hauled milk for many years. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on April 7, 1895 at Monona. In 1903, he was united in marriage with Emma Theis. She passed away in 1932. In 1933, he married Frieda Buckmann. They retired to Luana in 1952 and in 1964, she passed away. Mr. Landt had been quite well until a week ago Sunday when he was taken to the hospital where he passed away on Friday morning at the age of 86 years, eight months and nine days. Mr. Landt had been an active member of St. John Lutheran Church, Luana. He was a member of the Brotherhood and the Cemetery Board. He served for many years on the Luana Creamery Board and was president of the board for a time. Surviving are one son, Helmuth of Luana, who has served for many years as organist of this congregation; one daughter, Marie, who is Mrs. Louis Lenth of Postville, one sister, Mrs. Frieda Cox of Milwaukee, one half-brother, Henry Landt of Postville, and one half sister, Mrs. Ida Heins of Luana; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren; also two step-children, Mrs. Elmer (Rosalyn) Krambeer of Postville and Mrs. Harold (Margaret) Sebastian of Dubuque, step grandchildren and one step great grandchild. Preceding him in death were his parents, his wives, two sons, Lorenz, who died in infancy and Clarence, who died in 1950; two brothers, Fred and Charles; two sisters, Minnie and Dalia; one half-brother, Herman, one granddaughter, Delores, who was Mrs. James Hansel, and one great grandson, Alan Jarmes. Landt, 69, of Luana died suddenly Saturday afternoon, April 11, at 12:30 o'clock at a Prairie du Chien hospital. She suffered a heart attack in her home, Thursday, April 11, and was taken by ambulance that evening to the hospital. She appeared to be recovering after receiving hospital treatment. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, April 14, at 1:30 p.m. at St. John Lutheran church in Luana with Rev. Luther A. Meyer officiating. The body lay in state at the church from 12 to 1:30 p.m. Burial was in the Monona I.O.O.F. City cemetery. As Frieda Sophia Marie she was born the daughter of William Frederick and Mary (Possehl) Buckman, July 30, 1894, in Monona township. She was baptized in Zion Lutheran church at Clayton Center by Rev. F. W. Seifert. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith April 12, 1908, at St. Paul Lutheran church in Monona by Rev. Otto Wappler. She attended the Eno school in Wagner township and later the Bayless Business college in Dubuque. She was also engaged in practical nursing for many years. She was married to William F. Landt, Nov. 1, 1933, at St. Paul Lutheran church in Monona by Rev. Albert Daugs. The Landts lived on a farm south of Luana for a number of years, retiring to Luana in 1952. Mrs. Landt was a member of the Ladies Aid society, now the American Lutheran Church Women, and a member of St. John Lutheran church. Preceding her in death were her parents, one sister, one son by a previous marriage, and one grandson. Surviving are her husband, William Landt; two daughters from a previous marriage, Mrs. Elmer (Rosalyn) Krambeer of Postville and Mrs. Harold (Margaret) Sebastian of Dubuque; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; her dearly beloved Landt children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Arthur and Arno Buckman of Monona. They made their home on a farm near Lansing, Iowa until 1929 when they moved to a farm near Gunder and lived in this community until 1971 when Rosena became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in West Union. She is preceded in death by her husband, George, who died June 28, 1962, a daughter in infancy, her parents, three sisters, Hilda Torkelson, Alma Schoien and Caspara Henson, and six brothers, Tom, Otto, Clarence, Millard, William and Oliver Torkelson. Surviving are three sons, Orian and Gordon, both of St. Olaf, and Maurice of Postville, a daughter, Geraldine (Mrs. Leo Friederich) of Elgin, ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two brothers, Oscar Torkelson of Farmersburg and Carl Torkelson of Elgin and a sister, Mrs. Ida Larson of Elgin. She is preceded in death by her husband who died March 26, 1968, a son-in-law, Kenneth, in 1967, four brothers, Adolph, Henry, Ole and Louis, and a sister, Mrs. Ole (Gunda) Gisleson. Landsgard, son of Esten and Sarah (Gisleson) Landsgard, was born on August 1, 1891, in Clayton county, Iowa. He was baptized September 2, 1891 and confirmed on November 13, 1904 at the Marion Lutheran Church. He entered the United States Army on September 18, 1917. During the 14 months he served overseas he saw considerable action on the French fronts, including the battles of Argonne Woods and Chateau Thierry. He was one of the soldiers whose names were inscribed on the "Golden Book" of the soldiers of Verdun. He received his discharge on August 7, 1919. On January 4, 1923, he was married to Rosena Torkelson and to this union was born three sons and two daughters. They made their home on a farm near Lansing, until 1929 when they moved to a farm near Gunder and he resided in this community until the time of his death. He passed away suddenly of a heart attack at the home of a neighbor on June 28, 1962, at the age of 70 years, 10 months, and 28 days. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Geraldine, who died in infancy; his parents, three brothers, Oscar, Arthur and Harold and a sister, Sophie. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Rosena; three sons, Orlan and Gordon of St. Olaf, and Maurice of Postville; a daughter, Geraldine (Mrs. Leo Friederich) of Elgin, a brother Arthur of Elgin, a sister, Hulda (Mrs. Oscar Lindley) of Osage, eight grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. He was an active and lifelong member of the Lutheran church and served in various offices. he was a member of the Sheehan-Olson American Legion Post No. 375 of Clermont and earned a 40-year membership star. Funeral services were held at the Marion Lutheran Church on Sunday, July 1, 1962 at 2:00 p.m. His body was laid to rest in the family lot at the Marion cemetery. The Rev. H. J. Mathre officiated. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June of 1982. They farmed in Grand Meadow Township for fifteen years. In 1952 they moved to Postville where they have lived for 30 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and a sister. Surviving besides her husband, Harry, is a son, Robert of Cedar Rapids, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Elmer William Landt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Landt, was born October 12, 1914 on a farm five miles south of Luana. He was a confirmed member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Luana. The deceased spent his childhood and youth on the farm of his birth which he later rented from his parents after his marriage November 7, 1935. To this union one child was born. The last three years of his life were spent in the home of his parents in Luana. The deceased had been in failing health during the past three years. He spent much of this time in the hospital in Iowa City. He passed away last Friday morning, July 18, 8:30, having attained the age of 43 years, nine months and six days. He is survived by one son, Dean Landt of Luana; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Landt of Luana; one brother, Harvey Landt of Luana; and two grandchildren. A sister preceded him in death. Pallbearers were Bernard, Ronald and Charles Loftsgard; DeVere Halverson; Roger, Kenneth, Wayne and Harry Amundson and Aines Olson. He was born Dec. 15, 1918 to Theodore L. and Emma (Amundson) Loftsgard in Marion Township, Clayton County, near Elgin. He was baptized Feb. 9, 1919 in the Marion Lutheran Church by the Rev. Nels Arveson and confirmed there in 1933 by the Rev. S. J. Strandjord. He is a life-long member of that church. He attended the District No. 6 rural school and was graduated from the Clermont High School in 1938. He received a certificate as an Electrical Technician from the Industrial Training Institute at Chicago, IL. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II and was stationed overseas for over three years. He lived on the family farm until about 3 years ago, when he moved to the home he built in Clermont. He had been the custodian for the Marion Lutheran Church for many years and had taught Sunday School, sang in the church choir and held various church offices. In 1982 he was chosen as the American Lutheran Church Brotherhood Man of the Year. He was a self-employed electrician. He loved his work as well as his hobbies, which were wood carving and reading. He had been a member of the Luren Singing Society of Decorah for many years. Shortly after birth she was baptized in Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center. She attended the public schools in Read township. On March 10, 1908 she was united in marriage to Charles Landt. Shortly after her marriage she became a communicant member of the Lutheran Church. For the first three years after their marriage, they rented a farm south of Luana. Then they purchased the farm which they owned to this date and continued to farm there until about 22 years ago, when they retired and moved to Luana. In March, 1958, they observed their golden wedding anniversary, and their 55th last year. Mrs. Landt was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Luana, and the Ladies' Aid. The deceased was taken to the Lutheran hospital, LaCrosse, Wisconsin on July 17. She submitted to surgery on July 29. She passed away Sunday, August 4, about 4:15 p.m. She attained the age of 75 years, 24 days. She was preceded in death by one daughter who died in infancy and by one son, Elmer, and by five brothers. He is survived by her husband, Charles Landt; one son, Harvey; three brothers: John, Frank, and Charles Dahlstrom, Mason City; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, besides many other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, August 7, 1963 at 2:00 p.m. at St. John's by Rev. Luther A. Meyer. Burial in the Luana Lutheran Cemetery. Mr. Landt was educated in the rural schools of Clayton County. On Dec. 22, 1914 he was united in marriage with Lietzie Heins at the Lutheran parsonage in Monona. To this union was born three daughters, Mrs. Harold (Helen) Lenth of Farmersburg, Mrs. Robert (Leona) Foels of Luana, and Charlotte who passed away in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Landt made their home on a farm south of Luana until moving to Postville in 1946. Following the completion of his training there he entered Fire Control Technician School at the Naval Training Center at Great Lakes, Ill. The couple farmed until the fall of 1957 when they moved to Elgin, until her health caused them to move near West Union to be close to their daughter. The couple observed their 50th wedding anniversary while there. After her husband's death in June of 1971, she moved to the Good Samaritan Center in Postville. Looby in St. John Lutheran Church at Farmersburg by the Reverend Steege. To this union six children were born. They farmed in Wagner Township near Luana for 24 years. In 1976 they moved to a farm near Farmersburg. El Donna enjoyed her family, liked to bake and was especially known for her homemade bread. Her hobby was collecting salt and pepper shakers, embroidering and she had a great love for animals, especially her cats.
