Ferrall - IA DATE: 6/22/2010 at 15:14:52 Surnames: MATTHEWS,SABASTIAN,SEBASTIAN,LOVE,SAACKE,BROWN After a lingering illness of over two years Mr. Ed Matthews passed away last Friday at six o'clock, Nov. 8, 1918. He was born in Warren Co., Ohio, Jan. 27, 1855, and when only a few years old came with his parents to Iowa, settling on a farm in Wagner township that has since been known as the Matthews place, so that practically his entire life has been spent in and near Farmersburg. He was also engaged in the clothing business in Farmersburg for a time. He was married to Cella Sabastian, Sept. 7, 1898. He had been ill for a number of years, having suffered a stroke of paralysis which deprived him of his speech and the use of his entire left side, and from this he never recovered; nor was he able to communicate with others only by a hearty handclasp that he was glad to see his many friends. Mr. Matthews had a genial, kindly nature, was a good citizen and was ever ready to help when he could. During his long illness he was tenderly cared for by his faithful wife, relatives and friends. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity and the Modern Woodmen. In the Masonic lodge he was a worthy brother and had held the offices of Junior and Senior Warden. He leaves to mourn his loss a devoted wife, one brother, James Matthews of Farmersburg; three sisters, Mrs. Will Love of Ogden, Utah; Mrs. Louis Saacke of Wagner township, and Mrs. Will Brown of Cresco. Funeral services were held in the Farmersburg M.E. church, conducted by Rev. Self of Monona and the Masonic fraternity, Mr. Douglass Brown of Elkader acting as W.M. ~Postville Herald (Farmersburg news column), November 15, 1918
