Mrs. Breitsprecher was born June 6, 1919, in Reed Township, Clayton County, to James W. and Adelia Meyer Foran. She graduated from Garnavillo High School and worked for the Department of Agriculture. Vernice was married to Kenneth Breitsprecher June 9, 1945, at Zion Lutheran Church in Waterloo. She lived on the family farm after her marriage until 1958 when they moved to their present home at St. Olaf. She was a member of the Norway Lutheran Church ALCW. His body was laid to rest in the city cemetery under the arching sky awaiting the resurrection bugle call. He was a man of integrity and honor and loved and esteemed by his neighbors and friends. Comrade Fredrick Huff was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania on March the 17th, 1842; and died at his home at Monona, Iowa , March the first, 1923, lacking only 16 days of being 81 years of age. He grew to manhood and received his early education in his native state, Pennsylvania. During the time of the Civil War, when the spirit of secession and rebellion had captured the public sentiment of the southern states of our country Comrade Huff enlisted as a volunteer in answer to the call of President Lincoln. He served in the 3d regiment of Co. H. of Pennsylvania reserve Infantry. After his period of three years of enlistment had expired he again enlisted and served in various capacities until the close of the war, when he was honorably discharged on the 4th day of April 1866. After his discharge from the United States army he came to Iowa and for a time worked in and around Burlington, Iowa. Here he met his life's companion, Miss Mary Flair. They were married on September 18 1869. Unto them were born five children, two sons and three daughters, of whom one daughter, Alberta F. Hoffman preceded the father in death 24 years. Fifteehn years ago last January they came to Monona to spend the remaining days of their life in retirement. He is being survived by his wife who was his faithful companion and home builder for more than 53 years, two sons, George A. Huff of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Fred J. Huff of McGregor, Iowa; and two daughters,Emma K. Deal of Waukon, Iowa and Mrs. Mary Fish of Rossville, Iowa, one sister, Maria Hetzler, of Medford, Oregon, as well as eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren and many other relatives and a host of friends. Following graduation, Gwen and her sister, Marjorie, took the train to Chicago to find jobs. Gwen was employed as a private secretary at the F. W. Means Towel Company. Gwen was married to Edward Henry Boske on April 28, 1945, in Chicago. To this union four children were born, Donna, Debra, Daniel, and Douglas. They lived in several Iowa communities, which included Dubuque, Postville, Cedar Rapids, and Mason City, and moved to LaCrescent, Minnesota in December of 1961. In later years, Gwen worked for a microfilming company, preserving records for various companies, which included Gundersen Hospital in LaCrosse, banks, and other small businesses. Gwen enjoyed fishing, camping, and bowling, but above all, she will be remembered for her selfless devotion to her family.
