Hello: Can anyone help me with information about a poor farm that was located in or near Garnaville, Iowa in the 1860s? I would love clues on where to look or other information. Although, not the surname I'm searching, the overseer was an HL Schutte. Thank you very much for your help. Eleen Robinson [email protected]

M. Gilbert. Sunday evening, July 26th, at the close of a perfect summers day Mrs. Gilbert breathed her last, surrounded by the entire family. Her life was a beautiful example of Christian faith and she entered as quietly into the dark waters of the river of death as though she was entering a sweet sleep. Mrs. Eliza Murdock-Gilbert was born March 6, 1819 in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. The following year her parents removed to Cleveland, Ohio, in which city Mrs. Gilbert received her early education, and the careful motherly training that fitted her so well for the after duties fo life. Oct. 2, 1843, she was married to her husband of choice, Mr. J. L. Gilbert, and removed with him to Wisconsin where they resided for three years. From Wisconsin they pushed farther west, and crossing the Mississippi in the fall of 1846 they settled near Garnavillo, in Clayton county, where they resided for twenty-one years. In 1867 they removed to Elkader and have resided in the city ever since. Mrs. Gilbert was the mother of nine children, five of whom and her husband are still living. She was industrious and possessed an iron will and an indomitable perserverence in every good undertaking. She was kindhearted, charitable and believed in social harmony. Friends who have known her for years often say that they have never heard an unkind word fall from her lips concerning any one. She wanted to live but before her death she spoke of dying and said that she was prepared to go. Husband nnd children did all in their power to ease the last moments of the sufferer. The quiet serenity of her life, however, was typified in her death, which was so calm and tranquil that it could hardly be known when she breathed her last. The funeral services, which were held Monday at 4 oclock p.m., were conducted by Rev. L. U. McKee in a very able manner. Mrs. Gilbert having lived in this country for nearly forty years, had hosts of friends, who extend to the bereaved family a sympathy as deep as her life was pure and her death serene. She died like one who wraps, The drapery of his couch about him (illegible) lies down to pleasant dreams. __________________________________________ Notes: 1. I have typed this verbatim from the obituary, including a few typos. 2. The name and date of the newspaper is missing. Someone added the year of death as being 1885. 3. Someone corrected the year she moved to Elkader as being 1875. 4. There is a tear in the paper and there appears to be a sentence or a number of words missing before Husband nnd children did all in their power 5. There is a tear at the bottom of the obituary and parts of the poem are missing. Most of it can be figured out, though.

Gilbert 1818-1899 <http://iagenweb.org/boards/clayton/obituaries/index.cgi?rev=99053> AUTHOR: Dan McDougall DATE: 2/19/2006 at 03:27:48 Surnames: GILBERT,MURDOCK,COOK,ADAMS,DIERS James Lovell Gilbert. It was with mingled feelings of sorrow and gladness that our people heard the news that Mr. Gilbert had expired this morning at 3:45 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Marvin Cook. Sorrow that we should never feel his friendly hand clasp see his his pleasant face or hear the kind words that made everybody his friend, as he was a friend to everybody. Gladness that since his race was run, his labors oer, his mission in life completed, the all-wise God should in mercy relieve him of his suffering. James L. Gilbert was born in Vermont, April 14th, 1818, and was therefore nearly eighty-one years of age. His boyhood days were spent in Vermont but about 1840 he went to Ohio and on October 2, 1843 he was united in marriage to Eliza B. Murdock, at Rockport, in that state, In the fall of 1846 they came to Clayton county and for two years lived near Garnavillo. In the fall of 1848 Mr. Gilbert entered the land in Read township now owned by F. W, Diers and settled there until 1875 when he moved to Elkader. Nine children came to gladden the hearts of himself and wife, but four preceeded them to the other shore. In July 1885 the loving wife and mother was taken from him, and since that time he has lived with his surviving children, making his home most of the time with his daughter, Mrs. E. W. Adams, at this place, until her removal to Milwaukee about a year ago. Since then he has resided with his other daughter, Mrs. Marvin Cook, at whose home he died. For several years his health has been gradually failing and for several months he has been confined to his bed almost all of the time. In addition to two daughters mentioned above, three sons still survive: S. L., of Huron, S. D.; J.W., of Storm Lake, Ia.; and M. L., of Sheldon, Ia. The funeral services will be held tomorrow, Friday, afternoon at 2 oclock in the Congregational church. Revs. Crum and Fisk will officiate. Internment at east side cemetery. James L. Gilbert is dead, but to all who knew him intimately his memory will live while they themselves live, His genial, kindly disposition made him many friends, while his uprightness and honor commanded the respect of all who knew him. The sympathy of the entire community is with the sons and daughters in the loss of their beloved parent. ______________________________________________ Notes: 1. I have typed this verbatim from the obituary, including a few typos. 2. The name and date of the newspaper is missing. Someone added the handwritten message Died March 16th, 1899.

Samuel Murdock 1817-1897 <http://iagenweb.org/boards/clayton/obituaries/index.cgi?rev=99052> AUTHOR: Dan McDougall DATE: 2/19/2006 at 03:20:42 Surnames: MURDOCK AT REST. Honorable Samuel Murdock Is No More. Passes Away at His Home at 5:10 p.m. Tuesday. Was an Iowa Pioneer and an Able Lawyer. Samuel Murdock died at Elkader, Iowa, on the 26th day of January 1897, at 5:10 oclock p.m., after an illness of nearly three months, from the effects of a paralytic stroke. He was aged 79 years 10 months and 13 days at the time of his death. His father and mother were of Scotch parentage and were born and raised in the county of Armaugh, Ireland; emigrated to America in 1812 and settled near Pittsburg, Pa., where the deceased was born on March 13, 1817. In 1827 the family removed to Cleveland, Ohio, and settled text obscured farm near that city in the (text obscured) Rockport. Here Samuel Murdock grew to manhood and received such education as the common schools afforded. He taught school in several places in Ohio and studied law with Hon. Reuben Wood one of the supreme judges and afterwards governor of that state. In the fall of 1841 he left Ohio and came to Iowa; arriving at Davenport to which point he walked most of the way from Chicago. Remaining for a few days rest, he shouldered a heavy pack and again started on foot across the country on an Indian trail for Iowa City which place he reached after two days of weary travel. He remained there for over a year and was admitted to the bar of Johnson county. Coming to Dubuque on a tour of inspection of the country he heard of the beautiful prairies of Clayton county and starting out arrived at Jacksonville now Garnavillo on August 9, 1843; here he staked out a claim one and a half miles south of Garnavillo which he made his home, and which was known far and near as Judge Murdocks Evergreen Farm noted for its beautiful evergreens and large orchard a rare treat for the eye to behold in northeastern Iowa. He was the first lawyer who permanently settled north of Dubuque. In the year 1845 he was elected a member of the territorial legislature from the counties of Dubuque, Delaware and Clayton. In 1848 he was elected school fund commissioner, an office which he held for four years. During this time he sold most of the school lands of Clayton county. In 1855 he was elected the first judge of the tenth judicial district which included ten counties. In 1869 he was elected a member of the thirteenth general assembly. Judge Murdock was a lawyer of great ability and as lawyer and detective has taken a prominent part in many of the most important cases in Clayton county. In the summer of 1869 he unearthed the Hagerty Massacre and lodged the murderer in the penitentiary for life. As a prosecutor and trial lawyer he was alert, faithful, courageous and left nothing undone; he was a tireless worker and so far as could be observed had no fear of man. In the field of literature Judge Murdock was known as a writer of ability; he was familiar with and wrote learnedly on the important topics of his time; but over and above all this the crowning virtue of his life, - known and read of all who knew him was his gladness of heart that always responded to the call of distress from the poor and needy. As a lawyer, citizen, neighbor or friend no one applying to Judge Murdock for help was ever turned away. He leaves surviving him his wife and two daughters, Marion and Amelia, to mourn the loss of a kind husband and father. The whole community sympathise with the bereaved family and with numerous friends throughout the County and State regret the departure of their friend Judge Murdock. (source not given)
Nancy, Clayton co. had several newspapers by 1869: The Clayton County Herald of Garnavillo, was first published in January 1853. The North Iowa Times, started in Monona in 1856, then moved to McGregor. The Clayton co. Journal of Guttenberg started in May 1858. Mississippi Valley Register, Guttenberg, May 1859 (may have already folded by 1869) McGregor Press, began in August 1859. Die Nord Iowa Herald (German), started up in January 1868. If you are looking for a death notice for your gg-grandfather, if there was one, it most likely would have been in the paper published from the nearest town to his home. I don't believe that Elgin had a paper that early, but the Clermont Leader (Fayette co. ) was being published by 1866. Mr. and Mrs. Burlingame were in town in the evening and when they arrived home shortly after ten oclock the bull was making such a fuss. Mr. Burlingame went out to the barnyard to see what it was all about. When he did not return his wife called the neighbors, Joe Lotza and Ed Lestina and they came at once to her assistance. They found Mr. Burlingamess body in the yard where he had been trampled to death by the enraged bull. His chest was crushed in, every rib broken, and his lower jaw broken in three places, and a bad gash in the back of his head near the left ear were marks of the bulls terrible rage.
