SATURDAY BLAZE CLAIMS MONONA FOUR-YEAR OLD A Saturday morning, Feb. 25 house fire claimed the life of four-year old Justin Cahoon, son of Nathan and Melanie Cahoon of rural Monona. The fire reportedly began when the young boy and his five-year old brother, Jacob, were playing with the wood stove that heated the home at 211 Suttle Creek Road about five miles northeast of Monona, near the Allamakee-Clayton county line. When Monona firefighters arrived on the scene, the home was engulfed in flames. According to family sources, Jacob ran to find his mother when the fire began, but Justin apparently ran in another direction. After taking Jacob outside to safety, Melanie returned into the blazing home to search further, but could not find Justin. Reports indicate that his body was later found in a bedroom closet, where it is believed he tried to hide from the flames. A notice of funeral services for Justin Cahoon can be found on Page 5 of this weeks edition of The Standard. Waukon Standard, March 1, 2006

DIED Rosella [sic] Schroeder died at her home in Preston on Tues. Sept 16, [1902] at the age of 83 years, 10 months and 17 days. The deceased was born in Hanover, Germany, November 29, 1818. When in the eighteenth year of her age she came to this country and in 1856 was married to Henry Dubbels. Her husband died soon after and in 1861 she was married in Guttenberg, Iowa to Fred Schroeder. They came to Nebraska in 1866 and have lived in this county ever since, having spent the past eighteen years in Preston. Mrs. Schroeder leaves, besides her husband, three children, three step children, thirty-seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. To all of these the sympathy of the community is extended. Mrs. Schroeder was a Christian woman and all through her long life she had served the Lord with zeal unflinching and faith unyielding. She died in full assurance of the reward that awaits those who keep the faith as she had kept it. Her funeral was held on Wednesday and was largely attended. At the conclusion of the services the remains were borne to Zion cemetery and laid to rest. --------- The obituary above and notes following, appear in "A Pioneer Couple: The Story of L. D. William and Louisa Gatz", a family tree booklet compiled by Elizabeth L. Gatz, May 1992. Elizabeth Gatz added these notes: "If 1818 is Rosetta's correct birth date, she consistently knocked years off her age throughout her lifetime, even in 1856 before she had married a younger man. This date would make her nearly ten years older than Schroeder, rather than the six indicated in most census reports; I question its accuracy. All the marriage information is in error." ======================================== This clipping is from the church paper, probably the Evangelical Botschafter, and is translated. (saved by Louisa Schroeder Gatz) Schröder--- Rosette Schröder, nee Ribbe, wife of Friedrich W. Schröder, was born on November 29, 1818 in Linsburg, county Wölpe, Hannover, and died of stomach problems and old age on September 16, 1902, at the age of 83 years, 10 months, and 17 days. Mother Schröder joined the Evangelical congregation 32 years ago and stayed faithfully with it until her death. She was a faithful wife, loving mother, and pious Christian. She leaves behind her husband with whom she shared joy and sorrow for 41 years, one son, two daughters, two brothers, one sister, 15 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many friends. May God give all of them a happy reunion in heaven. C. Linge ---------------- The above article appears in a family tree booklet compiled by Elizabeth L. Reidel, 89, were held last Thursday afternoon at 1:45 o'clock from the Charles Reidel home to Pilgrim Evangelical church at 2 o'clock with the Rev. Harvey W. Raduege officiating. Burial was in the City Cemetery. Mr. Reidel died at the home of his son, Charles, Monday morning, Feb. 18, at 10 o'clock from a heart ailment having been in poor health since last September. He was born the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Reidel, Sept. 1, 1856, in Linton township, Allamakee county. He was married to Mary Katherine Sautter, May 23, 1883. His entire life of nearly 90 years was spent in this community. First he lived on the farm at Watson and later he bought the H.J. REIDEL _______________________ The poet tells us "Life is like a crooked railroad, rolling o'er the sands of time", but we are glad to know that some day we will be privileged to step off at the "Grand Union Station" and hear the words "Welcome home Pilgrim from a far away land." It pleased an almighty God to enter the home circle of our beloved friends and take a loved one to Himself again, this time it was a loving wife and kind mother, a sympathetic neighbor to answer the last summons; Mrs. Mary K. Reidel, nee Sautter. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, April 7th, 1861. In 1863 her parents came west and settled in McGregor Iowa, where she spent her maiden years. In 1883 on the 23rd day of May she was married to J.G. Reidel and settled on a farm in Giard township, Clayton County, Iowa. Out of this union there came forth four children, two sons and two daughters-Mrs. E.C. Pingel of Elkhart Lake, Wis, Chas. Reidel and Mrs. G.A. Waalk of Giard Township, and John Reidel of Monona township, all of which together with her husband, five granchildren and two brothers, Charles of Campbell, Calif., and William of Monona, Iowa, mourn her departure to the great beyond. Two brothers and three sisters preceded Sister Reidel in death. She was a very pleasing and kind dispostion, never a murmur of complaint passing over her lips but always hopeful. Even when death seemed imminent she was hopeful that soon all would be better. She fell asleep on the evening of Monday, March 8th, at the age of 58 years, 11 months and one day at her home in Giard township. The burial took place on Thursday March 11 from her late home, from there the funeral cortege proceeded to the M.E. Church at Monona where the Rev. P.F. Walter of the Evangelical church conducted the funeral services assisted by the Rev. J.B. Ackman of the M.E. Church. From this church the remains were taken to the Monona Cemetery for burial. "There is no death! An angel form Walks o'er the earth with silent tread He bears our best loved things away, And then we call them "dead". Born unto that undying life, With joy we welcome them-the same Except in sin and pain And ever near us, though unseen, The dear, immortal spirits tread; For all the boundless universe Is life--there is no dead." Those from away in attendance at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. E.C. Pingel of Elkhart Lake, Wis, Mr. and Mrs. H.J.
