I have a photo of Mahala, Emma, William Buckman and then Sophia Buckman Walters. On the back it says Sophia came to Buckman's home from Germany until she married. Mahala 1879-1895 Emma 1876-1932 William 1871-1953 Emma, Mahala, William are children of Johann Friederick & Fredericka Otting Buckman. On the 1880 census Sophia is not mentioned. Does anyone know anything about Sophia Buckman Walters? Thanks for any help given. AdaMarie

Emma Buckmann, who married Henry Palas, was the daughter of Johann Friederich Buckman (1837-1917) and Friederike Georgine Wilhelmine Otting (1842-1931). They had six children: Frederick (1867-1954), Johann Heinrich Friederich (1869-1957), William Ernest "Bill" (1871-1953), Emma (1876-1832), Mahala (1879-1895) and Sophia. We also have a Friedericke Buckman (1850-1911) who married Johann Friedrich "Fritz" Otting. Their children were: Maria (1873-1873), Margaretha "Sophia" (1874-1875), Emilie Wilhelmina Sophia (1876-1947), Georgne "Jennie" Fredereka (1878-1962), Herman F. (1880-1953), John Heinrich "Henry" (1882-1965), Justene W. (1884-1977), Odelia Mina (1889-1986), Ada (1891)-1918), and a Baby. Frederike Otting Buckman was a sister to Fritz Otting. Friedericke and Johann Friederich Buckman's parents were Herman "Friedrich" and Sophia Tuember/Toelmer Buckman. Ada Otting married Henry Koth, son of Fred and Catherine Henkes Koth. I'm interested in the Buckmans through the Otting connection and would be interested in more information on the Palas and Fritz Otting families. Lois Ahntholz

The deceased was 52 years old and came here last fall and lived in the Smart property west of town. For some time past it has been feared that she intended taking her life and she was watched carefully, but on Sunday morning she went to an out building and there swallowed some carbolic acid and her cries of agony was the first intimation the family had that she had done the deed. All efforts to save her life were ineffectual and after suffering terrible she died at a little past noon on Sunday. The funeral was held on Monday and conducted by Rev. C. C. Harrah and was largely attended by those who had met and known her during her brief stay among us. The remains were taken to Volga, Iowa, her former home, for interment on the evening train on Monday. ~ The Newton Journal (Iowa), Wednesday, April 12, 1893
