Helen, Birkholz may have been in Colesburg before 1895. The 1900 census says he emigrated to the US in about 1873, but I can't find him on the 1880 census anywhere or on the 1885 Iowa State census. The first time I find him 'officially' is in 1895. Even if he was already in Colesburg by 1880 (and missed on the census) and took the photo at that time, the man pictured sure looks to be younger than 54 (the age John S. in the bio would have been). Of course this is only my opinion, and I could be wrong, so don't take my words as gospel by any means. I hope you get some additional replies to your query. Birkholz, had a studio in Colesburg, Delaware co. roughly from 1895-1910. He appears on the 1895 Iowa State census and the 1900 Federal census in Colesburg, but by the 1910 Federal census had moved to Dubuque, where he continued to work as a photographer. Although I am very much an amateur at dating photographs, it has become somewhat of a hobby for me. In my opinion, your photo was likely taken between 1895 and 1910, and appears to be of a middle-aged man or perhaps even as young as 25-30 (it's hard to tell). His outer coat has the large, edged lapels that were the style during that time-period as well, although he likely wasn't a man who followed fashion since he is wearing a work shirt under his jacket and coat. By 1895, the John Schwighert in the 1882 biography would have been a much older man than the person in the photo (he was already aged 56 by 1882) Perhaps one of John's sons? Sharyl Ferrall
