As we gather them, the circumstances connected with this sorrowful event are as follows: For sometime past Mr. Moine has been despondent and the fact that he sold his old home preyed on his mind. On the day of the tragedy Mrs. Moine desired that he should go to St. Olaf with her to see a house they were to purchase. Joe pled that it was too cold and remained at home alone. Some time later in the day, a son-in-law came to the house and finding no one in the rooms, noticed that the cellar door was open. Going down to the cellar, he found Mr. Moines body, he having placed a revolver to his temple and fired. His cap had even taken fire from the shot but had been extinguished by the flow of blood. For the past twenty five years, Joe Moine has been known to those who travelled the Elkader and McGregor road, the house being run as a hotel until later years. He always seemed a jovial whole-souled man, generous to all as it was a pleasure to stop and have a social chat with him and Mrs. Moine. From all over the county will come a sad feeling of regret that the mind of a good-hearted old man should become so clouded that the deed was made possible. The funeral occurred at Clayton Center on Monday last, Reverend Seifert officiating. May an old friend rest in peace. (The Moines were my great great great grandparents. Their children were Mary (Kluth), Georginietta (McKellar), and Jules. The Moines ran a hotel for weary travellers as stated here. The story passed down is that Joseph used to haul wagon loads of fresh oysters from the Mississippi River and store them in the basement. Cold salt water was sprinkled on them to keep them fresh. His wife, Mary, cooked oyster stew to feed their hungry guests.)

H. Kluth, occurred the death of their son John after a short illness. He was born August 29th, 1894, in Wagner township, and at the time of his death was 15 years, 7 months, and 1 day of age. During his illness he was a patient sufferer, always waiting for better or worse. All that loving hands could do was done until about 10:00 oclock, when God took John home. He was kind and good at home as well as at school and will be greatly missed by all. Six of his schoolmates carried him to his last resting place. The pall bearers were Earl Knudtson, Floyd Orvis, Henry Aveson, Oscar Ronquist and William Henning. He leaves to mourn his loss his father, mother, three brothers and two sisters, George, Joseph, Leroy, and Minnie, who are still at home, and Mrs. John Hook of Elkader, Ia., also an aged grandmother and other relatives and friends. May God comfort them and grant all a happy reunion in that better land where there is no pain, nor death, nor parting. The funeral was held Saturday, April 2nd, at the German Lutheran church at Farmersburg. Services were conducted by Rev. Pett, assisted by Rev. Arveson, of St. Olaf. Burial in the Farmersburg cemetery. A precious one from us has gone, A voice we loved is stilled; A place is vacant in our home, Which never can be filled. God in His wisdom has recalled, The boon His love has given; And though his body moulders here, His souls is safe in Heaven. Alas, dear Jesus took him, But we know that all is fair, For well love and pray Till judgement day Then well meet our loved ones there. Card of Thanks We most courteously extend our sincere thanks to neighbors and friends for their appreciated kindness shown to the deceased through the sickness, death, and burial of our beloved son and brother. MR. AND MRS. WM. H. KLUTH AND CHILDREN >From scrapbook my grandparents had (William H. and Mary Celestine Kluth were my great great grandparents. Nine children were eventually born to them, but sadly only four survived to adulthood.)

Fifteen years later the family came to America, and for a few years made their home in Clermont, Elgin, and Mederville, until they moved to Elkader in 1886. Here the family remained, and Mr. Walther worked at his trade as wagon-maker. It was indeed a shock to the family when on August 4th, 1906, the husband and father was suddenly summoned out of this world; a stroke being the cause of his death. For a while Mrs. Walther remained in her home, but after all her children had married and had established homes of their own, she finally decided to give up housekeeping and spend the remaining years with her children. They were ever willing and ready to give the very best to mother. Perhaps she did not always fully realize this, but she could not help being convinced, that there was a hearty welcome and a good home with any and with all of her children. They surely have done what they could. More they could not do; less they would not do. Since October of last year, she has stayed at the Charles Huebner home, Postville, Iowa. Two weeks ago, a family reunion was held at the L.D. Smith home, near Elkader. Grandma Walther was happy in the midst of her children and grand-children. About a week later she was stricken with pneumonia. Everything possible, that loving children can do and will do, was done to prolong the life of mother. But God had willed it otherwise. After having partaken of the Lords Supper, and being conscious to the very last, she peacefully closed her eyes in the last sleep on Friday evening, a few minutes after eight oclock. The departure of a beloved mother is mourned by six children: Mrs. Anna Huebner, Postville, Ia. Mrs. Emilie Stallbaum, Dubuque, Iowa. Mrs. Mary Falb, Elgin, Iowa. Mrs. Linna Smith, Elkader, Iowa. William Walther, Elkader, Iowa Mrs. Emma Schultz, Postville, Iowa. She also leaves 17 grand-children, 6 of whom acted as pallbearers; 7 great-grandchildren, one brother in Germany, other relatives and many old-time friends, who will miss her in the days to come. Seven of the smaller grandchildren followed the casket with bouquets. She was a faithful member of the Evangelical church and the Frauen-Verein, and would attend services and meetings whenever she was able to do so. Services were held at 1:30, Monday afternoon of the home of her son Wm. Walther here in Elkader and at 2:00 oclock at the Evangelical church, with interment on the East Side cemetery, Rev. C.H.
