Rev. Harold O. Ward officiated. Burial was in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery. Schultz's Funeral Home, Monona, was in charge of arrangements. Herman Emil Appel was born November 24, 1902 in Monona, Iowa, to parents Joseph and Mathilda Carlson Appel. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Monona. He received his education in the Monona school. Herman worked for local farmers in the Monona area for several years. He operated City Service Station and DX station in Monona and drove an Iowa oil tank truck. September 5, 1948 he married Evelyn Gauper Knutson in Monona. The couple moved to Chicago, Illinois where Herman worked as a painter for University Club of Chicago. In 1964 Herman retired. They moved to McGregor in 1966 and lived there at present. Herman died Tuesday, April 19, 1988 at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. Preceding him in death were his parents; his first wife, Charlotte Sass Appel, who died Jan. 8, 1936; 2 sons, Roger Appel and Paul Knutson; 4 brothers and 4 sisters. Surviving is his wife, Evelyn, 4 sons, Richard Appel, White Bear Lake, Minnesota, Fred Appel, Niles, Illinois, Carl Knutson, Vernon Hills, Illinois and Earl Knutson, Chicago, Illinois; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Dennis Appel, Lorraine Lenth, Donald, Jerome, Ronald and Robert Sass. Postville Herald newspaper clipping from my mother's obituary collection. Submitter has no further information.

On Sept. 5, 1948 Evelyn was united in marriage to Herman Appel in Monona. The couple moved to Chicago, Illinois. They moved to McGregor in 1966 and lived there until Herman's death in April of 1988. The last few months Evelyn had been living with her son in Chicago. Evelyn died Friday, August 11, 1989 at her son's home in Chicago, Ill. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband Herman Appel, who died April 18, 1988; one son, Paul Knutson; one step-son, Roger Appel; one brother and one sister. Surviving are two sons, Carl Knutson, Vernon Hills, Ill., Earl Knutson, Chicago, Ill.; two step-sons, Richard Appel, White Bear Lake, Minn., Fred Appel, Chicago, Ill., 16 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, August 14, 1989 at 11:00 a.m. at the Schultz Funeral Home, Monona. Pastor Harold Ward officiated. Burial in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Monona. Survivors include: his wife; three daughters, Deborah (Mrs. Dennis) Tomaszewski, of Clinton, Doris (Mrs. Bryan) Rueber of Gassman Oelwein and Dawn (Mrs. John) Staffenhagen of Hazleton; six sons, Dennis (and wife, Becky), of Oelwein, Dale (and wife Susan) and Donald, both of Garden Valley, Cal., Douglas, of Verona, Mo., and Dean and Darren, both of Maynard; 14 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and one brother, Gerald, of Mesa, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Dwayne, in infancy, one daughter, Deanne, in infancy, one brother and one sister. A memorial fund has been established in his name. The Rev. C. E. Witt was in charge of the rites. Born in Germany. Mrs. Minnie Radloff was born in Corwalt, Germany on June 4, 1861, the daughter of Gustaf Schmidt and his wife, Fredericke Schroeder. She passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harvey Hamann of Garnavillo on Monday, April 16, at the age of 94 years, 10 months, and 12 days. She was baptized soon after birth in Germany. She came to America with her parent in 1881. On January 31, 1889, she was united in marriage to Carl Radloff. They lived on a farm south of Luana until they retired and moved to Postville in 1915. She was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Postville for as long as she lived in the community, always maintaining her active communing status. Her health began to fail in June 1955, when she went to live with her daughter. She was preceded in death by her husband on November 6, 1937, her parents, two sisters, Mrs. William Schlee and Mrs. John Kahle, and two brothers, Fred Schmidt and Charles Schmidt. Surviving are her four children, William of Luana, Henry of Postville, Mrs. John Lenth of Monona and Mrs. Harvey Hamann of Garnavillo, ten grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Radloff Passes Saturday _______ Funeral Services Were Held Here On Tuesday _______ Carl Friederich Henry Radloff was born in Blesewitz, Germany, June 26, 1866, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Radloff. Shortly after birth he was baptized and later became a communicant member of the Lutheran church of his native land by rite of confirmation. He came to this country at the age of seven years. On January 31, 1889, he was united in marriage with Miss Minna Schmidt. They first settled on a farm near Elkader, where they lived for two years. They then purchased the Overbeck farm, south of Luana, where they resided for twenty-four years, and in the spring of 1915 they moved to Postville, which has since been their home. Their union was blessed with four children— William, who lives on the old home place near Luana; Henry southeast of Postville; Mrs. John A. Lenth of Monona and Mrs. Harvey Hamann of St. Olaf. In the spring of 1936 Mr. Radloff’s health began to fail, and after treatment at the Iowa city hospital he was on October 25th of this year taken to a hospital in Dubuque, where he passed on at 12:55 p. m. on Saturday, November 6, 1937, at the age of 71 years, four months and 11 days, pneumonia being the immediate cause of his passing. Besides the children above mentioned he is survived by his wife, two brothers, William, of Farmersburg and Louis, of Clayton Center, and one sister, Mrs. Henry Harnack of Waterloo; also by nine grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. Fred Miller of St. Olaf, preceded him in death about five months ago. The above is in brief the life story of a man known to all as an honest an upright man, a good citizen, neighbor and friend, and all who knew this genial gentleman with [sic] sympathize sincerely with those bound to him by closer ties. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon, from the home at 1:45 p. m. and at St. Paul’s Lutheran church, of which deceased was a communicant member, at two o’clock, Rev. Meyer of Clayton Center officiating. Interment was made in the Postville cemetery.

Radloff, 87 of Chandler, Arizona, formerly of Luana and Postville, died Sunday, October 26, 2003 in the Chandler Regional Hospital. Services were held on Saturday, November 1, 2003 at 10:30 A.M., Heritage Lutheran Church, Gilbert, Arizona. Falconer Funeral Home, Gilbert, was in charge of arrangements. Survivors include two sons, Harley Jr. of Postville and Bruce of Anaheim Hills, California; a daughter, Lois Meyer of Mesa, Arizona; two sisters, Hester McGuire and Marge Leach, both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Also surviving are a daughter-in-law, Valetta Radloff and a son-in-law, Keith A. Meyer, eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harley J. Radloff; her parents William and Anna Gentz; a brother, Bill; three sisters, Agnes Schulte, Ann George and Rita Doerring; and a grandson, Lane Radloff. Born and raised in the Luana area, Mary helped her husband manage the Postville Bowling Alley and in farming. She was also a talented seamstress and tailor in Tempe and Chandler, Arizona. She was very active in St. Paul's Lutheran Church Women and volunteered at the Gilbert Senior Center and at Heritage Lutheran Church.
