Emma Elizabeth Hoth was born March 2, 1911, the daughter of Max and Bertha (Hohlberg) Bahls, near Garnavillo, Iowa. She was raised and educated in the area attending rural Clayton County schools. She was baptized and confirmed at St, Paul's Lutheran Church at Garnavillo. She was united in marriage to Willis Hoth, on June 16, 1930, at Garnvillo. Two children were born to this union. The couple farmed near St. Olaf for many years until moving into Elkader in 1958. After moving to twon she worked for a time at Mitchell's Greenhouse. Willis died June 19, 1974. She was a member of Peace United Church of Christ. Deborah Circle, and the East Side Cemetery Assoiciation. Emma Elizabeth Hoth died Tuesday night December 25, 1990, at the Central Community Hospital in Elkader. Survivors include her daughter Iva Dean, Mrs. Burnell Wilker, of Elkader, a son Leon of St. Olaf, six grandchildren, Dan, Brian and Mark Wilker, Leona and Suzy Hoth, and Julie Friederich, five great-grandchildren, a brother, Walter Bahls of Guttenberg, and two sisters, Cora Kliefoth of Monona and Anita Stade of Garnavillo. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers and sisters, Esther Hoth, Art, Verni, Bill, Arno, Carl and Lawrence Bahls and one at birth.

H. Hoth Services for Willis A. H. Hoth, 67, were held at Peace United Church of Christ, here, Friday, June 21, 1974. Burial was in East Side Cemetery. The Rev. Marvin H. Marcks, pastor, officiated. Hoth suffered heart failure at this home at 506 East Bridge Street died Wednesday, June 19. A son of John and Elsa Meier Hoth, he was born near Elkader in Boardman Township on August 20, 1908. On June 16, 1930 he was united in marriage to Emma Bahls in a ceremony at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Garnavillo. In 1937 the couple moved to a farm where they lived until 1958 when they moved to Elkader. In 1960 and 1961, he was interested in a feed mill and did carpenter and silo construction work. On November 22, 1908 he was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Clayton Center. He was confirmed there on March 25, 1923. Besides his wife he is survived by two children, Mrs. Burnell (Iva Dean) Wilker and Leon Hoth, both of Elkader. There are six grandchildren. He also leaves one brother Edward Hoth, Elkader. Preceding him were his parents, three brothers, Arthur, Emil, and Elmer and five sisters, Mrs. Henry (Trena) Glawe, Mrs. Albert ( Ella) Breitsprecher, Hilma Hoth, Sophia Hoth, and Mrs. Henry (Mahala) Radloff. Hoth, 32, who was killed in a farm accident near St. Olaf Saturday, April 23. Burial was in the East Side Cemetery, Elkader. The Rev. Alvin Volle, pastor, officiated. Hoth was killed when his tractor tipped over on top of him while hauling manure. The accident happened shortly after noon on the State Experimental Farm which Hoth operated south of St. Olaf. The Clayton County sheriff's office said the accident happened as Hoth drove his tractor loader from the farm driveway into an adjacent field. The field was on a side hill and authorities believe that the tractor loader tipped over under the weight of the manure load. Hoth was found underneath the load. He was discovered at 1p.m. by Harley Hermann, St. Olaf, who had come to the farm to pick up milk. The death was ruled accidental by Dr. Irving Ringdahl, acting county medical examiner. Hoth is survived by his wife Janice, two sons, David and Darrel, and three daughters, Beverly, Arlene, and Terese, all at home. He also leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hoth, Elkader, one brother Vernon, Farmersburg, and two sisters, Mrs. Allan (Marlene) Marmann, Elkader, and Mrs. Ronald (IlMae) Mueller, Monona.

After their marriage, Edwin and Viola farmed in Boardman Township until 1973. Mr. Hoth died November 2, 1986. Hoth died at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque, on Tuesday, November 2, 1976. He had entered the hospital on September 27 and submitted to lung surgery. Complications followed the surgery to cause his death. At the funeral service Inter George Wirsing read the scripture lesson. Pasor Zerhusen based the sermon on Romans 8:23, "The redemption of our bodies." The Rev. Ted Newton, of Elkader, sang two songs, " Just as I am" and " God will take care of you.", during the burial service. He was accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Ruth Moon. Mrs. John Zerhusen accompanied the congregation at the organ during the liturgy. A son of John and Elsie Meyer Hoth, Edwin was born on a Boardman Township farm on November 8, 1900. He attended the rural school of his community. He was baptised at Zion Lutheran Church on June 9, 1901, by Rev. F.W. Seifert and confirmed there on March 28, 1915 by Rev. F. Athenstaed. On September 25, 1923, he was married to Viola Schloetzer at Dubuque. They observed their 50th wedding anniversary in September 1973. After his mariage Edwin and Viola farmed on the parental farm in Boardman Township until 1973 when they retired and moved to Elkader. Surviving besides his wife are four sons, Harold, Farmersburg, Harry, Garber, Dwayne Elkader, John, Garnavillo, two daughters, Mrs. Lorenz (LuNida) Landt, Luana, and Mrs. Donald (Ivanelle) Henning, Strawberry Point; 20 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, Hoth is survived by a daughter, Dorothy, of Cedar Rapids, his mother, three brothers, Edwin, of Elkader, Elmer of Farmersburg, and Willis of St. Olaf, and four sisters, Mrs. Henry Glawe, Hilma Hoth, and Mrs. Albert Breitsprecker of Elkader, and Mrs. Henry Radloff of Postville.

She had been in poor health for several years. She received her education at the rural schools, was bapitzed September 24, 1893, by the Rev. F.W. Seifert and confirmed February 24, 1907, by the Rev. F. Linnenburger at the Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center. She was a member of this church at the time of her death. She moved to Elkader in 1924 with her parents whom she cared for until their death, her father, July 16, 1948, and her mother June 1, 1958. Miss Hoth was a member of Service Star Legion Inc. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Sophie, 7 years old, two brothers Arthur and Emil. She is survived by three brothers, Edwin, Elmer and Willis, Elkader, three sisters, Mrs. Henry (Mahala) Radloff, Clear Lake, Mrs. Albert (Ella) Breitsprecher and Mrs. Henry (Tena) Glawe and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Christina Hoth, Elkader. Mrs. Breitsprecher had been ill for four weeks. Hilma Ella Seeland, was born November 22, 1913, in Boardman Township, Clayton County to Henry and Caroline Glawe Seeland. her education was in the rural schools of the county. She was married to Ervin Breitsprecher in Read Township and lived on a farm near Clayton Center until 1958 when she and her husband moved to Elkader. She had been a sales lady in the Fashion Shoppe besides a wife and mother. One son Roger, rural Elkader, survives her as well as her husband and two grandsons, Brad and Brian. Also a sister, Mrs. Elmer Gusta, Strawberry Point, and two brothers, Harry and Clarence, both of St. Olaf. Mrs. Breitsprecher was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, the LCW, choir, Ladies Aid, and of the Central Community Hospital Auxiliary. She was baptized January 18, 1914 and confirmed April 10, 1927 by the Rev. Franke, Peace Church, Elkader. She and her husband celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary last October. The Rev. J. H. Zerhusen officiated at the burial services with interment in the New Clayton Centre Cemetery. Pallbearers were, Ivan Freitag, Ewald Thiese, Elmer Schnack, John Miller, Paul Schneider, and Dan Miehe.

He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church where he has been a life long member. On October 20, 1931, he was united in marriage to Hilma Seeland at Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Centre. A son Roger was born to this union. They farmed his home farm at Clayton Centre until 1958 when they moved into Elkader. At this time he continued to help on the farm and also worked for Powers Feed and Supply for a period of time. His wife died June 5, 1972. He has remained at home until a week ago when he entered Central Community Hospital, Elkader. He died there Sunday morning, December 29, 1991. Survivors include his son Roger, two grandsons, Brian and Brad, four great-grandchildren, Andy, Chad, Amy and Brandon, and a sister, Mrs. Vera Freitag of Elkader. He was preceded in death by his wife, and his parents.

In the year 1956 they retired from farming and moved to Elkader. Mr. Freitag did various jobs around town always eager to lend a helping hand. For a number of years, he was a janitor at the Opera House in Elkader. Freitag is preceded in death by his parents and three sisters. He is survived by his wife, Vera, their three children, Ivan Freitag, Elkader, Mrs. Carl ( Vergean) Schmidt, Farmersburg, and Mrs. Herb (Marilyn) Thome, Cedar Rapids, one brother, William Freitag, Elkader, three sisters, Mrs. Clarence Fehlhafer, Elkader, Mrs. Herman Kruse, Strawberry Point, and Mrs. Francis Gloden, Hinckly, Illinois, eight grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. She was raised and educated in the area attending country school. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center. She was united in marriage to Glendor Freitag on September 25, 1929. Three children were born to this union. Together they farmed in the Elkader area for many years. Upon retirement they moved into Elkader. Glendor died May 27, 1975. Vera was a longtime member of Peace United Church of Christ and the Deborah Circle where she enjoyed taking an active role. She was also a 50-year member of Royal Neighbors. Since September of 1993 Vera has resided in the Elkader Care Center, where she died Monday morning January 15, 1996. Survivors include her son Ivan and his wife Phyllis Freitag of Elkader, two daughters, Vergean Schmidt an her husband Carl of Farmersburg, and Marilyn Unruh of Cedar Rapids, eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother Ervin Breitsprecher.

Mrs. Breitsprecher was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Centre, a member of the Zion Frauen Verein, later the Ladies Aid, and more recently the Lutheran Church Women. In 1957, the Breitsprechers were privileged to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 26, 1965, at 2 p.m., in the Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center, cemetery. He also served on his church council and served at various times as chairman, treasurer and secretary of the council. Prior to his marriage, Breitsprecker lived at Rudd in Floyd County for two years. On June 21, 1907, he was married to Ella Hoth in a ceremony solumnized by the Rev. Franke at Peace Church in Elkader. In June 1957, Mr. and Mrs. Breitsprecker observed their golden wedding at their home in Elkader. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Glendor (Vera) Freitag and a son Ervin, both of Elkader. Preceding him were his wife, in 1965, four brothers, Fred, Willie, Herman, and Robert and two sisters, Minnie and Mrs. August (Mary) Scheffert. Willie, Herman, Robert and Minnie died in childhood.
