J.H. Zarhusen officiating. Burial was in the new Clayton Centre Cemetery. Pallbearers were her sons, Hugo, Milo, Henry, Alvin and Harley and grandson, Edwin Kalke. Mrs. Anna Kalke daughter of Joachim and Dorothea (Hoth) Mahnke, was born May 27, 1870, in Read Township, Clayton County, Iowa, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Clarence (Hulda) Baade, near Elkader, Thursday January 15, 1959, of apoplexy. Mrs. Kalke had been in failing health for the past five years and critically ill for the past two weeks. She was baptized shortly after birth by the Rev. F. W. Seifert and confirmed by him March 18, 1883, at the Zion Lutheran Church. Mrs. Kale was 88 years old and had spent her entire life in this community. She was married September 25, 1890, to Fritz Kalke at the Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Centre. The Kalkes farmed for 41 years on a farm in Read township, adjoining the one now occupied by their son Harley. In 1931 they retired to another farm across the highway. After her husband's death in 1932, Mrs. Kalke continued to live alone on this farm until 1954, when she was no longer able to care for herself. From then on she made her home with some of her daughters. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center, and its Ladies Aid. Mrs. Kalke was the last member of her immediate family, preceded her in death by her parents, two sisters, one brother, two infant daughters, Hattie and Emma, one grandson killed in action during World War II, and six great grandchildren. She is survived by eleven children, six daughters, Mrs. Louis (Elta) Eberhardt, Elkader, Mrs. John (Nelda) Schuety, Edgewood, Mrs. Elmer (Freda) Schutte, Guttenberg, Mrs. Eldo (Rena) Kamin, Charles City, Mrs. Marvin (Edna) Henning, Farmersburg, and Mrs. Clarence (Hulda) Baade, Elkader, five sons, Hugo, Elkader, Milo, Floyd, Henry, Rockford, Iowa, Alvin, New Richland, Minnesota, and Harley, Elkader, 33 grandchildren, 79 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. All of her children were able to attend her funeral, as were 31 of her grandchildren, along with some of her great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

In 1887, he came to America, with his parents, who settled in the neighborhood of Clayton Centre on the former Fred Lembke farm. Fifty years ago, he was confirmed in Clayton Centre on April 1882, by the late Rev. F.W. Seifert. His marriage to Miss Anna Mahnke occurred September 25, 1890, The young people then built up the home place where they resided for 41 years, rearing their children, to young manhood and womanhood---two children died in infancy. In 1931 they removed to their present home. He endured much suffering, in his lifetime, submitting to five different operations in 25 years, the last one on Sunday, April 17, in vain, to save his life. Death came at the age of 63 years, eight months, and 24 days. Those surviving to mourn his death are his widow, Mrs. Anna Kalke, the eleven children, Elta, wife of Louis Eberhardt, Garnavillo, Nelda, married to John Schuety, Osborne, Hugo, Elkader, Frieda, wife of Elmer Schutte, Guttenburg, Milo, Rudd, Rena wife of Eldo Kamin, Sioux City, Heinrich, Sheldahl, Edna wife of Marvin Henning, Farmersburg, Harley, on the home place near Elkader, Hulda, wife of Clarence Baade, Elkader, and Alvin, Rudd, his aged father, one sister, Mrs. Maria Fayn, Dubuque, and 21 grandchildren. His admisrable qualities as a citizen, husband, and father will long be remembered and he was well loved and respected by all who knew him. He was a member of the Zion's Lutheran Church, Clayton Centre. The esteem in which he was held was shown by the large attendance at the funeral which was held Saturday, April 23, at 1:30 p.m. from the home and in the church at Clayton Centre. Interment was made in the new cemetery, the Rev. B. F. Korte officiating.

He enjoyed farming, his family, and the small things in life. He was a member of Peace United Church of Christ, the American Legion and the VFW. He died Friday, July 31, 2001, in his home after a long battle with leukemia. She was an active member of the Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader, teaching Sunday School for many years. Later Marie and Haldon joined the St. Paul's Lutheran Church where she was active in quilting and Ladies Aid groups. She enjoyed bowling, golf and many card games, especially bridge. She died Tuesday July 27, 1999, at the Priarie du Chein Memorial Hospital in Wisconsin after a long illness with cancer. Rev. Lance Bentley officiated the service with burial in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Clayton Centre. Pallbearers were Milt Kramer, Clyde Kramer, Robert Kramer, Ronald Reimer. Dr. Ken Reimer, Doug Reimer, Mike Reimer, Jerry Eberhardt, Dennis Eberhardt, Louis Eberhardt and John Eberhardt. Elta Henrietta, daughter of Fritz and Anna (Mahnke) Kalke, was born August 6, 1892, in Read Township of Clayton County. She grew up and was educated in the area attending rural Clayton County schools. September 14, 1915, she was united in marriage to Louis Eberhardt. Six children were born to this union. After their marriage they farmed near Garrnavillo. She was active in Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Centre, and served as a Sunday school teacher. In 1942, they moved to a farm near Elkader where she resided until entering the Elkader Care Center in 1979. Her husband died April 7, 1972. Elta Eberhardt was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and Mary's Circle of Peace United Church of Christ. She died Tuesday night February 21, 1989 at Central Community Hospital in Elkader. Survivors include two sons, Lu Vern of Elkader and Floyd of Garnavillo, two daughters, Mrs. Haldon (Marie) Reimer of Garnavillo, and Mrs. Milton (Anna Mae) Kramer of Elkader, 25 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren, five step-great-great-grandchildren, two great-great-great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Hulda Baade of Elkader, and Edna Henning of Farmersburg. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, LeRoy, a daughter Florence Fette, two grandchildren, Elaine Siebrecht and Loren Reimer, a great-granddaughter, Sandra Wiethorn, five brothers, Harley, Henry, Hugo, Alvin and Milo, five sisters, Frieda Schutte, Nelda Schuety, Rena Kamin, and two in infancy, and her parents. Burial was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, at Clayton Centre. The Rev. A.F. Volle, pastor, officiated. Eberhardt died Friday, April 7, at his farm home on the western border of Elkader. A son of John and Minnie Lundt Eberhardt, he was born at Postville on November 4, 1889. He was baptized at Postville and confirmed at Peace Church here. On September 14, 1915, he was united in marriage to Elta Kalke by the Rev. C.H. Franke in a ceremony at Peace United Church of Christ. To this union were born three daughters, and three sons. The couple observed their golden wedding seven years ago. He is survived by his wife and five children, Lu Vern of Elkader, LeRoy of Elkader, and Floyd of St. Olaf, two daughters, Mrs. Haldon (Marie) Reimer of Guttenberg, and Mrs. Milton (Anna Mae) Kramer of Elkader, two brothers, Henry, Elkader, and Martin, Washington State, two sisters, Mrs. Herman Schlee, Elkport, and Mrs. Ida Bergman, Minneapolis, 26 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded by a daughter, Mrs. Florence Fette, a brother, John, a sister, Mrs. Tillie Waterman, a grandson Loren Reimer, and by a great-granddaughter, Sandra Wiethorn. Honorary bearers were Alex Schneider, Ollie Hustad, Ray Zwanziger, Valmah Siebrecht, Pallbearers were Richard Klinkenberg, Harold Seeland, Darrell Kifer, Steven Clausen, Morris "Bud" Eide, Robert Hanson. He was born August 26, 1921, in Garnavillo Township, the son of Louis and Elta Kalke Eberhardt. He attended the Garnavillo schools, and graduated from high school in 1940. He married LaNida Glawe at Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Centre, in 1942. They became the parents of three children. They farmed near Garnavillo for six years, then in 1948 they bought the farm near Elkader where they lived until the fall of 1985. He died at Central Community Hospital in Elkader Friday morning, April 11, 1986. LeRoy was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church, where he served many years on the church council and also served as president of the congregation. One of his special joys was his service on the Boy Scout committee where he worked as chairman for many years. He also was a member of the Elkader Lions Club, and served on the board of Central Community Hospital. Survivors include his wife LaNida, a daughter, Mrs. John (Diane) Gerken of Cascade, his son Dennis of Elkader, eight grandchildren, (Scott, Aaron and Mark Siebrecht of Garnavillo, Kim, JoAllen and Michael Gerken of Cascade, and Stacy and Jennifer Eberhardt of Elkader), his mother, Elta Eberhardt, Elkader, two sisters, Mrs. Milton (Anna Mae) Kramer of Elkader, Mrs. Haldon (Marie) Reimer of Garnavillo, and two brothers, LuVern Eberhardt of Elkader and Floyd Eberhardt of Garnavillo. Koehn Mrs. Wm. Koehn, 80, nee Mary Krieg, died in her home in Guttenberg yesterday morning at 6:30. She was born in Wuertenberg, Germany, August 28, 1852. Later she came to America and settled in Volga township. She married May 11, 1869, in Volga township to William Koehn, who preceded her in death, Oct. 30, 1931. Mrs. Koehn had been in poor health for some time and death came as a relief to her suffering. Deceased lived in Volga township on a farm for 41 years and for 12 years in Elkport. September, 1921 she moved with her family to Guttenberg where she has since made her home. She is survived by five daughters and four sons, as follows: Mrs. Wm. Jungblut, Guttenberg; Wm. Koehn, Elkader; Mrs. Chas. Ochsner, St. Louis, Missouri; Charles Koehn, Fort Dodge; Mrs. Chas. Kemps and Mrs. Amanda McSperrin, Dubuque;George, Cedar Rapids; Grover, German Valley, Illinois; and Mrs. Chas. Waterman, Garber. Besides these she is survived by 26 grandchildren,17 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Wm. Krieg of Volga and Gus Krieg of Edgewood and three sisters, Mrs. Wm. Lundt August John Lundt, son of Henry Lundt and Mina Lundt,nee Schultz, was born in Volga township, Clayton Co., Iowa, June 19, 1875. January 17, 1900, he wwas united in marriage to Miss Minnie Lindenberg. Mr. Lundt was a staunch member of the Ev. Lutheran Immanuels church of Elkport and has served at various times as a member on the church council. He was ever ready to help and aided where he could. He lived all his life in Clayton county, where he not only was a friend to all, but a neighbor to be proud of. He was a devout Christian throughout his life time. Last August Mr. Lundt became ill, and from that time on his condition became worse. The best of medical aid was sought, taking him to the hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. Returning he was under the care of skilled men and a nurse as he at times began to show signs of recovery he was taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Walter Turner in Elkader, where he died April 15, 1932. At the time of his passing Mr. Lundt was engaged in farming. He leaves to mour his untimely death, his widow, one son, Walter Lundt, St. Olaf; three daughters, Mrs. Agnes Zittergruen, Elkport; Mrs. Eunice Turner, Elkader; Mrs. Anita Heyde, Garber; six sisters, Mrs. Walke, Guttenberg; Mrs. Voss, Garber; Mrs. Mike Costigan, St. Paul; Mrs. Joe Voss, Seattle,Wash; Mrs. Henry Benschneider, Elkader; Mrs. Wm. Steen, Elkport; also five grandchildren. He reached the age of 56 years, nine months, and 26 days. Funeral services were held Monday, April 18,1932, at 2:00 p.m. in the home of the deceased and at 2:30 in the Ev. Luth.church, Elkport. Interment was in the Mt. Harmony cemetery. The Rev. F.E. Damm was in charge.

Death occurred after an illness of nearly three years, during which time he sought medical aid at Muscatine, Iowa City, Cresco and with home doctors, but to no avil. His last illness was of 11 weeks duration. Confined to his bed continually, he was faithfully cared for to the end by his daughter, Mrs. John Krambeer, at whose home he passed away. Mr. Henkes was baptized in the Lutheran faith May 2, 1856. He was united in marriage to Fannie E. Moon May 18, 1881, who with three daughter, has preceded him in death. He is survived by five children, Monroe Henkes, Clara (Mrs. John Krambeer),Cora (Mrs. Fred Kurth),Lottie (Mrs Joe Russell),of this vicinity, and Howard Henkes of Guttenberg, and six brothers and sisters, Charles Henkes, of Canora, Canada, Mrs. S.G. Baughman of Los Angeles, California,Mrs. Helen Koth and Mrs. Katherine Koth of Monona, Mrs. Len Sebastian and Mell Henkes of Cresco. He is also survived by 25 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, besides many other relatives and friends. Mr. Henkes lived in this vicinity all of his life and was well known and highly respected by all who knew him. During his last illness he was a patient sufferer and was ever concerned in the welfare of his children. He has indeed earned the rest which has come to him. The pall-bearers were six grandsons, Lester, Kenneth and Myron Krambeer, Eldon Kurth, Alton Henkes and Lloyd Russell. The flower girls were six granddaughters, Lucille, Lorene and Irma Krambeer, Marietta and Helen Henkes, and Irene Kurth. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, April 17th, at the John Krambeer home at one o'clock and at the Gooding church at 1:30, the Rev. E.W. Reichert of Monona officiating, with burial in the family lot in the Gooding cemetery. L. Whitman, oldest daughter of Samuel Gratke and Henrietta, his wife, was born January 14, 1870, on a farm in Richland Township, Delaware County, Iowa. Soon after she was baptized at St. Sebald, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent on the farm, till her parents moved to Strawberry Point. Here she was instructed in the confirmation class and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in 1883, afterward attending public school. On March 30, 1889, she was united in marriage to Ira Whitman. To this union one son was born, Ervin R. During her married life she, with the family, lived on a farm near Manchester till about six years ago, when they changed location on account of Mr. Whitman's health, moving to Hathaway, Montana, which had been her home until recently. On last Christmas she came here to make her home with her sister, Mrs. Emma Wareham, and husband, to help care for her mother, but the Lord willed it different. While assisting in the care of the sick she contracted the influenza, followed by pneumonia, to which she succumbed on February 21, 1919, at 6:30 A.M., at the age of 49 years, 1month and 7days. Her husband, Ira L. Whitman, preceded her to the beyond on September 8, 1916. She leaves to mourn her loss her aged mother, one sister, Emma Wareham, and one brother, Godfried Gratke of this place, the only son. Ervin R. Whitman at present with the marines, stationed at Puerto Plato, Dominican Republic; three stepdaughters, Lena Addison and Lydia Straub of Lisbon, North Dakota, and Martha Jones, Manchester; One step daughter , Anna Hill , preceded her in death about 8 years ago. She also leaves an aged aunt, Anna Marschall, and one uncle, Charles Rodies, both of Manchester, and other relatives and hosts of friends. Funeral services were held at the home of L.C. Wareham, conducted by Rev. Fritschel; interment in the Strawberry Point cemetery. When she was six years of age the family emigrated to America and took up its residence in Jefferson township, Clayton County, Iowa. She was confirmed at St. John's church at Guttenberg April 6, 1879. Four years later the family moved to a farm near Luana. On October 26, 1888, she was united in marriage to Fred H. Kregel. Seven children were born to this union, four of whom preceded their parents in death. Mr. Kregel died May 3, 1916. In February, 1920, Mrs. Kregel moved to Garnavillo. In November of last year her health began to fail and she was taken to the home of her daughter Amanda at Monona and placed under surgical and medical care, but all measures taken were powerlesss against the advance of the disease and she died last Sunday morning at the age of 66 years and 10 days. Deceased leaves one son, Herman, of Garnavillo, two daughters, Mrs. Amanda Meyer and Mrs. Selma Dettmann of Monona; two sisters, Mrs. Ida Borcherding of Guttenberg and Mrs. Minnie Bugenhagen of Luana, and five grandchildren. Four children preceded her in death. Funeral services were held at St. Peter's church here last Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Bunge officiating. Interment was made in new cemetery.
