She came here from Ohio twenty years ago. In the neighborhood where she lived she was highly esteemed. Mr. Stiner has lost in her a kind and affectionate wife, and Wagner Township one of her best and noblest women. Monlux in Wagner township December 10, 1928, at 8 p.m. After having been confined to her bed but three days, death was caused by influenza and pneumonia. Eliza Monlux was the youngest and the last of ten children of the Ezra and Susana Monlux family. She was born in the state of Ohio, December 30, 1854 and came to Iowa by covered wagon with her parents when two years old and until death had always lived on the same farm, which her father purchased of the government in 1855. Miss Monlux was a good friend and neighbor always ready to help any in time of need, for betterment of community and in case of sickness. Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon, Dec. 13 from the U. B. church; burial in the Wagner township cemetery. Rev. T. W. Tysdal of St. Olaf officiated. She is survived by eleven nephews and eight nieces. Relatives attending the funeral were: Mrs. Maude Tresler and Ray Monlux of Morris, Minnesota and Will Monlux of Rock Rapids, Iowa. Wagner DATE: 3/12/2010 at 20:22:08 Surnames: MONLUX,DRUM,WAGNER Ezra Monlux, who lived for many years in Wagner township, died Wednesday morning, Nov. 4, 1891, at eleven o’clock. He lived to the age of 83 years, 6 months, 10 days. His death is deeply deplored by his many friends. Funeral services were held at the United Brethren church. Ezra Monlux, son of William and Margaret (Drum) Monlux, was born April 24, 1808 in West Liberty, Va. When two years old his father moved to Ohio near Zanesville where he worked at farming and at his trade of shoemaking. Our subject was educated in common schools of that place. At the age of twenty-one he left home and worked on the turnpike in Ohio three years; then purchased a tract of 100 acres of lumber land which by hard labor he converted into a farm with a good house and out-buildings. In 1856 he sold his place and bought 210 acres of land on Sec. 7 and 18, Wagner township. He erected a house on section 18 where he died. His farm is well improved and one of the finest in this section of Wagner township. Mr. Monlux was married to Susannah Wagner, a native of Pennsylvania, born August 15, 1810. This union was blessed with ten children, seven living, Margret, William, John, George, Charles, Ezra and Eliza. His wife died Aug. 11, 1879. He lived on the old homestead with his youngest daughter, Eliza. In politics he was a republican. In time of war he furnished four boys to defend our country’s flag. He is well and favorably known in the community in which he lived as a man of integrity, worth and a representative citizen of Clayton Co. He now sleeps his sleep of peace. Glawe, passed away at the Guttenberg Hospital on Tues., Oct. 17. Mrs. Glawe enjoyed good health until March of this year and has been an invalid since July. Mrs. Lucinda Glawe, age 78, was the daughter of William & Emma Kahlbaum Gottschalk. She was born in Boardman Twp., Clayton Co., on June 8, 1894. She was united in marriage to Albert Glawe on Nov. 5, 1913 by Rev. C. H. Franke. They were blessed with five sons and six daughters. Lucinda was baptized into the Christian faith by Rev. Seifert at Zion Lutheran Church in Clayton Center on Aug. 5, 1894. She was also confirmed there. In 1927, she joined Peace UCC in Elkader and here she continued her membership the remainder of her life. She was a member of the Women's Fellowship and the Senior Women's Circle. She lived on several farms in this area until 1952 when she and her husband retired from the farm and moved into St. Olaf. A member of the American Legion Auxiliary, she was a Gold Star Mother, having lost a son during World War II. Preceding her in death were her husband; two infants children, Raymond and Darlene; two sons, Harvey and Lloyd; one brother, three grandchildren and one great grandchild. Surviving are two sons: Burnell and Verdine of St. Olaf; five daughters: Mrs. Gladys Coobs of Iowa City, Mrs. Clayton (Lucille) O'Neal of Prairie du Chien, Wis., Mrs. LuVern (Vera Mae) Palas of St. Olaf, Mrs. Clifford (Betty) Leuchtenmacher of St. Olaf, and Mrs. Jack (Bonnie) Jeffery of Cedar Rapids; three brothers: Harvey Gottschalk of Garnavillo, John and Valley Gottschalk of Elkader; one sister, Mrs. Kenneth Thompson of Monona; 39 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. He was the son of Henry and Mary (Kamps) Genz. He was baptized and confirmed in St. John's Lutheran Church, Luana, and attended the Luana Public Schools. During the early years of his life, he lived in and around Luana working as a farmer. In 1937, he joined St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Postville. After leaving farm work, he worked many years in the hardware stores in Postville. For the last three years he had worked at the Hygrade Meat Packing plant in Postville. He died following a lingering illness at the Postville Community hospital in Postville on July 26, 1963. He was preceeded in death by both his parents, and one sister, Mrs. LeRoy Kruse of Luana. He is survived by his sister Florence, Mrs. Walter Bugenhagen of Luana, many relatives and a host of friends. The funeral was held July 29, in St. Paul's Lutheran Church at 2:00. She was baptized in the Lutheran church at Clayton Center. Her parents later left Farmersburg and located near Wyckoff, Minn., where they resided eight years, then returning to Iowa and settling four and a half miles north of Luana and then on the present Lorenz Doerring farm. There being no Lutheran church in Luana at that time she received her religious instruction in St. Paul's Lutheran church at Postville. After her confirmation she lived with her parents on the Heins place northwest of Postville, then on the Sebastian farm and next on the farm now occupied by Geo. Sander, and it was while residing here that she was united in marriage with Henry Genz and they established their new home on a farm north of Luana; next they moved to Wagner township, where they resided seven years and since 1910 they have lived on a farm northwest of Luana, where on Sunday, Jan. 8, 1928, she passed away at the age of 50 years and 18 days. Beside her husband she leaves to mourn her loss three children -- Mrs. LeRoy Kruse, Elmer and Florence -- one brother, Fred Kamps of Dubuque; one sister, Mrs. Geo. Sander; three grandchildren and many friends. The funeral services were held from St. John's Lutheran church, Luana, Wednesday, Jan. 11, Rev. H. P. Kumpf officiating. Gruel Last Rites Held Funeral services for Mrs. William Gruel, 86, were held Thursday afternoon, July 8, at 2 o'clock at St. John Lutheran church in Farmersburg with Rev. R. H. Steege officiating. The body lay in state at the church from 1 o'clock in the afternoon until the time of the services. Mrs. Gruel had been in failing health for the last several years. In the last two weeks her health failed rapidly. She was taken to the Postville hospital, Tuesday morning, July 6. She died there after she had been in the hospital about 20 minutes at about 4:45 a.m. As Anna, she was born the daughter of John and Fredericka (Glawe) Drews, Sept. 7, 1878, in Germany. She was baptized in the Lutheran church in Germany, Sept. 13, 1898. When she was 3 year old, she came to America with her parents and at first settled in the Clayton community and then later moved to the Farmersburg community. She received her education in the rural school of her home community. She attended religious school at Zion Lutheran church in Clayton Center and was confirmed there April 10, 1893. She was married to William F. Gruel at Farmersburg, Feb. 15, 1900. After their marriage, they started farming. For five years they lived on a farm between Clayton and Garnavillo, and then they moved to a farm in Monona township. In 1916 they moved to a small acreage between Farmersburg and Monona. In November, 1959, Mrs. Gruel moved with her son, Lester, to their present home in Monona. Mrs. Gruel was a faithful member of St. John Lutheran church at Farmersburg. As long as her health permitted, she attended the various worship services and was always ready to be of service where needed. She was also a member of the Women of the Church organization. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, who died March 8, 1959; three children who died in infancy; and two sisters, Mrs. Henry (Bertha) Harnack and Mrs. John (Ricka) Engelhardt. Surviving are her son, Lester of Monona, and a sister, Mrs. Henry (Lena) Gruel of Monona. Honorary pallbearers were: Walter Duwe, John Dettmann, Willis Lamker, Emil Aulerich, Vern Zieman, Fred Hass, Herbert Ihde, and Edward Bush. Active casket bearers were: Starr Baade, Hallet Baade, Edward Sass, Landry Kishman, Roger Henkes, Eugene Ihde, and Lorin Dettmann. Gruel who had been in poor health the past few years passed away at the hospital in Postville early Sunday morning. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon with services in the Luana Lutheran church and burial in the Luana Lutheran cemetery. Herman John Karl Gruel, son of Wilheim and Christine (Mueller) Gruel, was born February 9, 1873 in Garnavillo. He was baptized March 2, 1873. In the spring of 1866 (sic), as a young man he worked as a hired man until February 16, 1897 when he married Miss Wilhelmine Koss. On March 2, they moved on a farm one and a half miles north of Luana. In March of 1932 they moved to Luana. On May 10, he became janitor of St. John's Church until December 1950 when his health became impaired. He leaves to mourn three children: Viola, Mrs. Wilbert Lenth, of Monona; two sons: Alvin Gruel of Postville and Wilbert Gruel of Decorah. His wife preceded him in death, November 19, 1946. His father, mother, one brother and one grandson, also preceded him in death. He is survived by his children, seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He received his education in the New Hampton schools graduating from high school in 1928. He attended Iowa State University in Ames and received a teaching certificate. On December 25, 1930, he was united in marriage to Marvelyn Alice Trusty, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple had 3 children. He taught school in Klemme and Stanley, Iowa. In 1940 he moved to Monona where he owned and operated the Monona Feedmill and Hatchery until 1987. He died at his home Wednesday, August 2, 1989. He was a member of the Brotherlove Masonic Lodge #204, Shriners, Monona Kiwanis and Garden City United Methodist Church. He also served on the school board. Preceding him in death were his parents and 3 brothers, Charles, Lynn and Grant. Surviving are his wife, Marvelyn; one son, Dennis (Margaret) Grove of Harpers Ferry; 2 daughters, Jacquelyn (Alan) Butterfield of Stillwater, MN, and Judith (Gaylord) Oelke of Monona; 9 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Laurence and Glen of New Hampton and Warren (Bill) of New Hartford, Iowa; and one sister, Hazel Hanley, Vancouver, WA. The Rev. Julius L. Peterson and the Rev. David R. Nelson officiated. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. Alma Sophia Gulsvig, daughter of Bernhard F. and Louise (Overbeck) Schroeder, was born Dec. 21, 1889 in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County, Iowa. She passed away Oct. 18, 1982 at Community Memorial Hospital in Postville. She was baptized on June 22, 1890 and confirmed April 5, 1903 in the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, Iowa. She attended school in the Postville Community and later was engaged in the millinery business in Belmond, Iowa, and also operated a Millinery Store at Elgin, Iowa. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. On Jan. 20, 1915, she married Albert Gulsvig at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. To this union two daughters were born. The couple farmed east of Gunder until March, 1950 when they moved to Postville to retire. They continued their interest in farming until March, 1973. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Albert, who died in 1974, a brother, John A. Schroeder and five sisters, Mrs. E. H. (Margaret) Knodt, Rosemount, Minn., Mrs. William (Kathryn) Meyer, Castalia, Mrs. Carl (Minnie) Welzel, Postville, Louise Schroeder and Amelia Schroeder, both of Cedar Rapids. He died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 1992, in the Covenant Medical Center at Waterloo, IA. He attended the rural schools near his home and later he attended a Barber College in Forest City, IA. On Oct. 20, 1933, he was married to Olive Freeman at Cresco, IA. They had five children. He lived in the Postville area most of his life. He was employed as a meat cutter at the Postville Locker for 35 years. For the past 12 years he has lived in Waterloo at the home of his daughter, Donna and her husband, Glenn Elliott. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Olive, who died in 1966, a son, Ronald, two brothers, Milo and Roy, and a sister, Irene Larson. Surviving are three sons, Dean (Donna) Gulsvig of Twin Lakes, WI; Jerry (Patricia) Gulsvig of Camarillo, CA and Landis Gulsvig of Waterloo, IA; a daughter, Donna (Glenn) Elliott, 17 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, and a great-great grandson, two sisters, Lila Renzman of Postville and Gladys Puffer of Portland, OR; and a brother, Richard Gulsvig, Waterloo, IA. Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 31, 1992, at 1:30 p.m. in the Schutte Funeral Home at Postville, IA. The Rev. Charles W. Miller officiated. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. The Rev. Norman Ullestad officiated. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. Albert, the son of Asbjorn and Elsie Olson Gulsvig, was born March 6, 1885 in Marion Township, Clayton County, Iowa. He was baptized on April 6, 1885 and confirmed on June 18, 1899 in the Marion Lutheran Church, Gunder. He attended Valdar Business College at Decorah for two years which completed his education. For eight years he lived in Havre, Montana working as a brakeman for the Great Northern Railroad. In 1913 he returned to Gunder and purchased a farm from his parents east of Gunder. On January 20, 1915 he was united in marriage to Alma Schroeder at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. To this union two daughters were born. The couple farmed east of Gunder until March 1950 when they moved to Postville for retirement. He continued his interest in farming until March 1973. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Postville and also a 50-year member of the Order of the Masonic Lodge. He served as Marion Township Clerk, Clayton County and on the Board of Directors of the Clermont Valley Creamery for several years. Survivors include his wife, two daughters, Berma Lane and Eileen; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Erickson and Mrs. Clara Wold of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Mrs. Evelyn Knoblock of Montevideo, Minnesota and many nieces and nephews. Gulsvig was born November 1, 1877 in Marion township, Clayton county, Iowa, the son of Asbjorn Gulsvig and Elsie Olson Gulsvig. He died at the Postville Hospital after an illness of three weeks at the age of 79 years, two months, and 23 days. He was baptized and confirmed at the Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder, where he was a life-long member. On June 15, 1910, he was married to Emma Wettleson. He spent most of his life farming south of Gunder. Mr. Gulsvig was preceded in death by one daughter, Ethel; his parents; and two brothers, Olavus and Edward. Surviving are his wife, Emma; three children, Violet (Mrs. Victor Fiskerbeck) of Ossian, Mae (Mrs. Tillman Thompson), and Almar of Postville; five grandchildren, Elizabeth and Ardis Fiskerbeck, Jerald and Rebecca Thompson, and Gene Gulsvig; two brothers, Albert of Postville and Ben of Maquoketa; four sisters, Mrs. Robert Knobloch of Montevideo, Minnesota, Mrs. Jorgine Stearns, Mrs. Ben Erickson and Mrs. E. Gulsvig, 49, who passed away suddenly at his home April 19. Rev. S. J. Strandjord was in charge of the final rites. Burial was made in Marion cemetery. Roy Palmer Gulsvig, son of Embret and Ida Gulsvig, was born July 10, 1905 in Marion township. Here he grew to manhood and attended the rural school there. He was baptized and confirmed at the Marion Lutheran Church at Gunder by Rev. Arveson. Roy spent most of his life around Gunder until about 12 years ago when he moved to Postville along with his parents and where he resided until the time of his death. He was well known and well liked and willing to help where ever help was needed. Roy passed away April 19 about 8:15 in the evening, at the age of 49 years, nine months and nine days. He is survived by his parents, two sisters, Mrs. Gladys Puffer of Portland, Oregon and Mrs. Lila Renzman of Postville; three brothers, Ernest and Milo of Postville and Richard of Cedar Falls, Iowa. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Boyce officiated at the services. Embret Gulsvig, son of Joarand and Embret Gulsvig, was born in Clayton county, Marion township, February 4, 1874 and passed away at his home in Postville on August 4, 1956 at the age of 82 years and six months. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Marion Lutheran Church at Gunder by the Rev. Waldeland, being a lifelong member of this church and living in this community on the old Gulsvig farm up until about 15 years ago when he retired and moved to Postville. He was united in marriage to Ida Reierson of Kensett, Iowa on June 7, 1900. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife and five living children, namely: Ernest, Milo, Mrs. Lila Renzman of Postville, Richard of Cedar Falls and Mrs. Gladys Puffer of Oregon. Preceding him in death was one daughter (Irene) Mrs. LeRoy Larson of St. Olaf in 1936 and one son, Roy of Postville in 1955, and four brothers and four sisters.
