He was born June 29, 1932 at Postville, the son of Orrie and Mary Amundson Gilson. He married Jean Daly in 1958 at LaCrosse. He married Marles Walters at Maryville, Mo. >From 1966 to 1979 he was a correctional supervisor at the Iowa Men's Reformatory. He then worked at Luster Heights until his retirement this year. Survivors include his wife, Marles; two daughters, Heidi of Prairie du Chien and Mary Gregor of Maquoketa; a step-daughter, Dee Miller of Alameda, Calif.; four sons, Mike of Wyoming, David of Oxford Junction, Danny of Maquoketa and Eric in Germany; eight grandchildren; five sisters, Dorothy Aldredge and Norma Rosell of Decorah, Myrtle Drahn of Monona, Carol Reeder of Waukon and Delores Steiner of McHenry, Ill.; and two brothers, John of Waukon and Lawrence of Eitzen, Minn. Gisleson and Gunda Bergitte Amundson. He passed away Thursday, April 8, 2004, in the Good Samaritan Center at West Union, Iowa. He had reached the age of 92 years, 8 months, and 7 days. Milo attended the Vellersven School District No. 6. He lived and worked on the family farm located near Gunder all of his life. Milo was a lifetime member of the Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder. He moved to Clermont in 1989. Milo had been a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in West Union since May 1, 2003 Hunting, fishing, gardening, and traveling were some of Milo's favorite activities. He was an avid reader and had a significant interest in native American history. He donated his extensive collection of arrowheads to the Clermont Museum for everyone to see and enjoy. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ole and Gunda, a brother, Otto, and a niece, Eleanor Naylor. While in high school he participated in football, wrestling, was class president three years and student Boyd president one year. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and being with friends in his spare time and collected farm machinery as a hobby. Currently he was working at Atwood Industries in West Union. He was a member of the Company B 1st Battalion 133rd Infantry National Guard unit out of Oelwein for the last two years. Chad Farmer died Wednesday, July 21, 1993, near Elkader of injuries sustained following an auto accident. Survivors include his parents; one sister, Sherri Farmer of Strawberry Point; and a half-brother, Dustin Nurre of Greeley; grandparents William and Dorothy Farmer of Prairie du Chien, Wis., and Russell Hook of Greeley; and a nephew, Derek Nolan of Strawberry Point. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Elsie Hook. _____________________________________________________________________ TRAGIC ACCIDENT CLAIMS LIVES OF 2 LOCAL TEENAGERS Funeral services for two young victims of a tragic car accident Wednesday, July 21, were held this past week. Services for 17-year-old Tammy Christeleit were held Sunday in the Central High School gymnasium. Services for 19-year-old Chad Farmer were held Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The two-vehicle accident which claimed the lives of the two young people, both recent graduates of Central High School, occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 21. According to the Iowa Highway Patrol, the vehicle driven by Chad Farmer was eastbound on county road C2W about two miles southwest of Elkader. His vehicle crossed the center line and struck the vehicle driven by Tammy Christeleit. Both were killed in the crash. As Lena, she was born the daughter of John and Friedericke (Glaw) Drews, Feb. 26, 1887 in Garnavillo township, Clayton county. She was baptized May 28, 1887, at St. Peter Lutheran church in Garnavillo when Rev. Somerlad was pastor and was confirmed at St. John Lutheran church in Farmersburg, March 31, 1901. She attended the elementary school at Farmersburg. She was married to Henry Gruel of Farmersburg, Feb. 20, 1908. They farmed in the Monona, Farmersburg area. Mr. Gruel died in 1952. In 1960 she moved to Monona, living with her son, Floyd, until 1969. In April of that year, she moved to the Carriage house in McGregor, where she continued to live until the time of her death. She was a member of St. Paul Ev. Lutheran church in Monona and a member of Peace circle of the Women of the Church. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, two daughters who died in infancy, one in 1911 and the other in 1913, and three sisters, Mrs. Henry (Bertha) Harnack, Mrs. John (Rika) Engelhardt, and Mrs. William (Anna) Gruel. Honorary pallbearers were Eilmer H. Lenth, Harry Schievelbein, Louis Breitsprecher, Herbert H. Lenth, Harvey Debes, Edward Bush, and Hurbert Lenth. Active casket bearers were Eugene B. Following his military service he married Laurene Rose, December 30, 1949. They moved to Dubuque in 1950 where he worked as a machinist at the Adams Co., and retired after 32 years. At the time of his death, he worked at St. Stephen's Food Bank. Arlene Margaret (Lauer) Gulsvig Granby, the daughter of Peter and Hulda (Trapp) Lauer, was born February 3, 1927, in Fayette County near Eldorado, Iowa. She passed away Thursday, October 24, 2002, in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa. She had reached the age of 75 years, 8 months, and 21 days. She was baptized in St. Peter Lutheran Church at Eldorado and confirmed there on March 17, 1940. Arlene attended elementary school and graduated from 8th grade in the Fayette County country school system. Due to her mother's illness, Arlene had to put her education on hold, during which time her father encouraged her to pursue her musical education. Arlene dedicated her time helping with the care of her mother and other family responsibilities. On June 15, 1946 Arlene was married to Almar Emil Lewis Gulsvig in the Stavanger Evangelical Lutheran Church at Ossian, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Gene and Linda. They lived in the Gunder and Postville area until the death of her husband, Almar, who died April 4, 1963. The family then moved to Waverly, where Arlene worked at various jobs, including the bakery and the Bremwood Children's Home. She was married to Bennette Granby, and they lived in Ames and Oelwein, then moved to the Albert Lea, Minnesota area, where Bennette passed away in 1981. Through her connection with the Glenville Church, she met her special friend, Harold Schell. Harold remained in her life to share her love of dancing, music, fishing, and travel, until his death in the fall of 1995. In 1996 Arlene moved to West Union, Iowa to be closer to her grandchildren. When her health began to fail in January, she moved to Postville to be with her daughter. On February 2, 2000 she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center, where she shared her love of music by playing the piano for her friends and the staff. Arlene had a great love for her family, music, and animals. She especially loved her dog, Baby Face. She was a talented musician and could play almost any instrument, including clarinet, accordion, and piano, and had given piano lessons as well. She crocheted and knitted and taught many young people in the skill of needle work. Arlene had worked at Gordanier Cleaners in Postville. Through the years, she also worked in many homes as a home health care provider. Arlene was a member of the Glenville Lutheran Church and the Women of the Church at Glenville, Minnesota. She played the organ there for several years. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Almar and Bennette, and a special friend, Harold Schell, and two brothers, Ralph and Clare Lauer. Surviving are her children, Gene Gulsvig of Forest City, Iowa, and Linda and her husband, Gerry Lovell of Postville; two grandchildren, Tara Elaine Moore of Postville and Joshua William Moore of Waterloo, one great grandchild, Mason Donovan Powell of Waukon, one brother, Leslie R. Orville was born on July 2, 1930, in rural Clayton County Iowa to Victor and Welma (Ihde) Ruckdaschel. He attended Springfield Country School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II until he was honorably discharged. Orville was united in marriage to Maria Lauwaert on November 28, 1958, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple lived in Postville, Iowa, and then moved to Mesa, Arizona in 1972, where Orville worked for Caterpillar as a mechanic. They moved to Monona, Iowa, in 1983, and Orville drove truck until he retired in September 2000. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, Iowa. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Survivors include two sisters, Betty (Donald) Knuth, Ankeny, Rose Marie Doerring, Monona; one sister-in-law, Betty Timmerman, Decorah and a host of other family and friends. Orville was preceded in death by parents, his wife, Maria, on July 22, 2000; one brother, Earl Ruckdaschel; two step-sisters, Ileta Christofferson, Eunice Halverson; one step-brother, Merrill Dean Ruckdaschel and two nephews. Mariella and John Miller were the owners of the Fashion Shoppe and J & M Spirits for many years in Elkader. She loved to play cards, marbles, crafting and spending time with her family and friends. Debbie Sue Meyer, 52, of Monona, Iowa, died Monday, January 18, 2010, at the Methodist Hospital, Rochester, MN, following a brief illness. Debbie was born on August 4, 1957, Prairie du Chien, WI, to Calvin and Shirley (Sass) Henkes. She graduated from MFL High School with the class of 1975. Debbie was united in marriage to Brian Meyer on September 4, 1976, at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg, Iowa. Three children were born to this union. Debbie and Brian started farming east of Monona, Iowa following their marriage. She took great pride in their farm, raising pigs and watching Nicholas and Phillip become involved in the farming operation. Debbie could be found outside tending to her flowers, mowing her lawn and helping on the farm. She enjoyed listening to Shannon play the piano at home, at school and at Norway Lutheran Church. Her favorite summer past time was going on Family Vacations to the Clayton County Fair, where she would watch Nicholas, Shannon and Phillip show livestock. She felt truly blessed by the addition of her grandchildren and she brought as much joy into their lives as they did into hers. Debbie enjoyed looking at life through their eyes and the focus of her life was to always be there for her children and grandchildren. Debbie looked forward to Sunday morning church, picnics in the woods and going on her walks. She would go out of her way to help her extensive family and friends. She was also a committee member of Clayton County FSA for eleven years and worked at Clayton County Recycling. Debbie always had a smile on her face and took great pride in everything she did; she appreciated the simple things in life. Burial will be in the East Side Cemetery at Elkader. Leonard Funeral Home assisted the family. Clifford George Pops Palas, 85, of Elkader, died Tuesday evening, January 19, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. Clifford left this world surrounded by family to begin his reunion with family that preceded him in death. He was born to Luver and Esther (Wilker) Palas on July 5, 1924, in rural St. Olaf. Clifford was raised on his parents farm near St. Olaf, receiving his education at a neighboring country school. He served in the Army Air Corp near the end of World War II, a service he took great pride in. He led a life of consistent sharing, laughter and kindness. He made it his mission to bring a smile to the face of everyone he met. Clifford raised his family with his values of integrity, honor and a strong work ethic through some challenging times. During his working career, he gained experience in a number of professions, including farming, heavy construction, home building and in his retirement, worked for the City of Elkader supervising the City Park, which provided Cliff with what he called his golden years of work and pleasure, all rolled into one. Clifford was a mentor for many as a supervisor in many roles, always leading by example with core values that he verbalized as, close is not good enough, doing things right the first time, respect those you work with and many other values. He spoke only as needed and said in those few words volumes about the values in which he lived his life. Clifford was united in marriage to Norma Erickson on November 14, 1947. Survivors include his companion, Florence; his daughter, Lori (Dennis) Bergan of Elkader; sons, Brian (Carole) Palas of Ely, Mark (Cindy) Palas of Ely, David (Theresa) Palas of Volga, Ronald (Denise) Palas of Arlington, Gary (Sandee) Palas of Cedar Rapids; his sisters Julaine (Roger) Mohning of Monona and Jennadine Walters of Ankeny; fifteen grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him were his parents; his wife Norma, two brothers Lavern and John Palas and his sister, Yvonne Frye. Cliffords family extends Great Appreciation and Thank You to the Nurses, Doctors, and Staff at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. The level of care and compassion Clifford and Family received during these past weeks was touching to say the least. What you do each day represents the Very Best Skill and Caring. Tesar, age 73, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. She was born January 11, 1937, in Monona, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Emma (Havlicek) Lestina. She married Clifford Tesar at St. Bridgets Church in Postville, Iowa. He preceded her in death on June 26, 2005. Loretta was a member of the Parish Council of Catholic Women and worked in the Homebound Ministry. She worked in nursing for many years until her retirement. She enjoyed reading, crosswords, dancing and spending time with family and friends. She was our center. She is survived by a daughter, Lori (Paul) Schwarz of Wauzeka, Wis., two sons: Terry (Peggy) Tesar and Kevin (Kim) Tesar, both of Prairie du Chien; four sisters: Helen Stickfort of Garnavillo, Iowa, Donna Martie of Monona, Iowa, Marcy Lenth and June Looney, both of Prairie du Chien; four grandchildren: Kirk, Nick, Kristian and Kamryn, along with a great grandchild, Kadin. She was born July 11, 1918 in Manchester to Nate and Dora (Foldman) Hammond. Mildred grew up around the Communia and Edgewood area. Mildred worked for Myles Coonfare in the Garber/Elkader area where she met her future husband, William Kruse. On June 23, 1936, Mildred and William were united in marriage. They farmed the family farm in Pine Hollow, rural Garber, until they retired from farming in the early 70s and moved to Clayton Center. Following Williams death, she moved to Elkader. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkader. She loved to quilt, play cards and dance. Vegetable and flower gardening were also things she enjoyed. Mildred is survived by five children, Irvin (Carol) Kruse of St. Olaf, Dorothy (late Loen Jump") Hansel of Garber, William Jr. (Janet) Kruse of Guttenberg, Maxine (Clair) Kruger of Littleport, Kay (Jim) Bolsinger of Greeley; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Heller, 76, of Colesburg, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital surrounded by his family. Visitation was Tuesday before services at the funeral home. Funeral services were Tuesday at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Guttenberg. Rev. Marvin Bries conducted. Lawrence was born the son of Lawrence W. and Frances (Hannig) Heller on Dec. 1, 1933, in Dubuque. Lawrence graduated from Senior High School in Dubuque and served his country proudly during the Korean War in the U.S. Navy where he was aboard the USS Midway. After his honorable discharge, Lawrence was united in marriage with Anita Johnson on Aug. 9, 1958, at Sacred Heart Church in Dubuque. Together they were blessed with five children. Lawrence worked for John Deere Dubuque Works until his retirement in 1989 after 30 years of service. Lawrence tilled the land he lived on growing crops. He was also a dairyman until they switched to raising beef cows. Lawrence was a member of the John Deere Union. He had an admiration for the outdoors which included hunting, fishing, his horses, taking the grandkids out for a 4-wheeler ride and spending time with his family. Lawrence will be missed and loved by his wife of 51 years, Anita; five children, Randy (special friend, Denise) Heller of Guttenberg, Lori Heller of Warren, Ill., Sandra K. (Larry) Furlong of Dubuque, Timothy (Kim) Heller of Elkader and Dan (Jennifer) Heller of Cedar Falls; nine grandchildren; one sister, Joan (Bob) Palmer of Colesburg. John Joachim Soost died out there and was later in the 1900's moved him from where he was buried to Hawarden, Iowa. But I was wondering if there could be an obituary of him someplace over their at Farmersburg, Iowa. His wife Katheryn Mary lived there until 1893 then moved to the Hawarden area. John died in 1896.
