General Notes: Andrew "Rufus" Whealey {Populist}, a native of the county of Huntington, Province of Quebec, Canada, was born on July 6, 1852. He moved to Valley Springs, Minnehaha County, Dakota Territory, in 1876. and took up a claim in the County several miles from the village. In 1890 he traded his homestead for One Hundred and Sixty acres in Jefferson Township, Moody county and bought an other One Hundred and Sixty acres adjoining it. Politically, he formerly affiliated with the Republican Party, but after th e Populist Party was organized, Mr. Whealey supported that Party. He was a member of the school board both in Minnehaha and Moody Counties, was elected sheriff of Moody County in the fall of 1890 and served two terms. In 1896 he was elected State Senator to represent his County at the State Capitol of Pierre. He was married in 1872 to Miss Mary J. Rowe; they raised one foster daughter, Lola.
