Therefore, thanks for the information that the Jenns lived in far SE Floyd county. I will therefore start checking the Floyd county site for 1860 census information and continue checking the Chickasaw county site for 1870 census information when it becomes available. The correct spelling is Jenn (as opposed to Yenn) back into the 1600s in the Rhineland. What probably happened was that the old German written (not printed) capital J looks like a "Y". This no doubt threw off the non-German census officials of those times. Theodore Sr and Christina Knecht Jenn's marriage certificate from 1861 in LaSalle County, Illinois reads "Yenn" also, but all other documentation I have located (plus their tombstone in North Washington, Iowa) read "Jenn".
