Henry(Heinrich) Hartmann and Clara Schwartzenstein ... were married February 14, 1889. ..." Paul, I took a look at the 1900 census, and it says that Henry and Clara have been married only one year, suggesting that the marriage year you provided is 10 years too early; I imagine that 1889 was just a typo in your post. As you may already know, the Iowa Marriages database gives Feb. 14, 1899, as their marriage date. I highly recommend getting a copy of their marriage records, as it may mention Henry & Clara's birthplaces and parents' names. Do you know your grandparents' death dates? Their death records or obituaries may mention their birthplaces. Have you seen Henry in the 1920 census? In that particular year, his birthdate is specified as Schaumburg-Lippe. The 1920 census also indicates that Henry was naturalized in 1892. You might want to contact the Chickasaw county vital records office to inquire how you can get a copy of his naturalization documents (including declaration AND petition); these MAY specify his place of birth, the ship on which he traveled to the US, specific date of arrival, etc. Have you looked for Henry in passenger lists? Was your father's middle name Richard? I find a Victor Richard HARTMAN living in Fredericksburg listed in the Nashua Reporter on 1 Oct 1941, among those who is to report to the [local draft board?] in New Hampton on October 7. Did your family live in "Billtown"--Williamstown? Do you have a sister Bernice? If so, I found her mentioned in Nashua Reporter, 1953 > March > 5 (running a high fever). Do you have a brother named Richard? If so, a photo of him riding a pony at Dairy Days in Fredericksburg is in the Nashua Reporter, 1958 > July > 10.
