McFarland: "Father enlisted in the 31st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. This was in January of 1864. On the way to the 'front' he stopped to see Rob [his brother - BRM], who lay in a hospital. I think this was at Nashville or Chattanooga, Tenn. He joined the army of Gen. Wm. T. Sherman, about the time, I think, that Atlanta was reached. Under the leadership of that great general he made the famous 'March to the Sea' and continued the march northward until Charleston fell and the army of Gen. Joseph E. Johnston surrendered in May 1865. He participated in the grand review of the Union armies held in Washington soon after the close of hostilities, and was mustered out of service and returned home that summer."
