McFarland: "John was married August 21, 1864, and soon after that left his young wife and all the rest of the friends and enlisted in the 5th Wisconsin Infantry. I am not familiar enough with his military career to give in detail the battles in which he participated. I think he served for a time under Gen. P.H. Sheridan and then joined the main army of Gen. U.S. Grant before Petersburg and Richmond and 'was in at the death' of the Army of Northern Virginia commanded by Gen. R.E. Lee, which surrendered April 9, 1865."
