    1. [IACHICKA] CCGS Announces Its Publications Completed in 1999
    2. Janette Hendricks
    3. To All Chickasaw County Iowa Researchers: You may be interested in four publications published in 1999 by the Chickasaw County Genealogical Society. The two marriages publications are as follows: #2295 "Chickasaw Co IA Marriages by Groom Books 1-5 1853-1901" and its companion #2294 "Chickasaw Co IA Marriages by Bride Books 1-5 1853-1901" These 1999 publications are published in alphabetical sequence (work done by Jannette Hendricks) and replaces publication #0143 which earlier was in dated chronological order. The first orders for the following new Cemetery books have just been sent out the first week in January. Publication #2389 "Chickasaw County Iowa Chickasaw Township Cemeteries", and Publication #2388 "Chickasaw County Pioneer and Early Established Cemeteries". These two books have 3179 burial records involving 29 cemeteries in Chickasaw County. "Chickasaw Township Cemeteries" publication has information on Cedar View aka Chickasaw Cemetery, Rowley Hill aka Mount Carroll Cemetery near Bassett and St Boniface Catholic Cemetery aka Ionia Cemetery. The publication also has information on two abandoned cemeteries ca 1880s. The land of these two reverted to land use as recorded in the county deed books at the turn of the century. "Chickasaw County Pioneer and Early Established Cemeteries" publication has 1803 burial records involving 24 cemeteries. Twelve of these cemeteries are considered "Pioneer." A "Pioneer" cemetery is a classification by Iowa law and the State Association for the Preservation of Iowa Cemeteries (SAPIC). These "Pioneer" cemeteries are defined as having six or fewer burials in the last fifty years. Some of the cemetery records are recorded in earlier CCGS/IGS published books and have now been updated. These two cemetery books have burial records, some as early as 1852. About 1500 obituaries were read (in 1999) and additional date information found in the obits was cross-referenced and added to existing burial records. Most often, the tombstone has only the year of birth and death. The added "months and day" data will make it possible for future researchers to find the obituary on film. This work is done by CCGS Member Jeanette Kottke this past year and with other members' help canvassed the cemeteries in 1999. The work was cross-referenced with earlier Chickasaw County Genealogical Society canvasses done in the late 1970s along with other extant documentation such as church records, W.P.A. and other vital records. As is often the case, errors have occurred and when found, every effort was made to check further records to find a correct entry. Each of the 12 township pages include its area cemetery history. It is the most up-to-date work available. The CCGS works in conjunction with the Iowa State Genealogical Society (IGS) to make our publications available to interested researchers. Within the state and county genealogical societies, this is known as "The Revenue Sharing Program." The state level society is able to provide support to the smaller county societies with their publications programs by taking responsibility for the reproduction, order filling and shipping of ordered publications to purchasers. Efficiencies resulting from this cooperative effort and centralized approach helps to keep the cost of publications down for everyone. Hope this information helps for anyone wondering why CCGS publications are ordered from the Iowa Genealogical Society, rather than directly from CCGS.
