D. GARDNER DIED AT RIPE OLD AGE Passed Away at His Home Tuesday, August 20th Funeral Held Thursday Afternoon at 4 o’clock The death of Weston Duane Gardner, one of our oldest and most highly respected citizens, occurred at his home on North Chestnut Avenue Tuesday evening, August 30, 1921 at 5:30 o’clock. Death was due to the infirmities of old age. With his death another name is stricken from the ever lessening roll of our old settlers. His life work was done, and well done and he has lain down to rest. How much this community owes him and such as he, it is impossible to estimate, though it would be a grateful task to trace his influence through some of the more direct channels, to hold him up in these days, in his various characters of husband and father, of neighbor and friend, to speak of the sons and daughters he has reared to perpetuate his name and emulate his virtues. A brief narrative of his life is as follows: Weston Duane Gardner was a native of Massachusetts, born in Hampshire County, December 19, 1828. His parents were Captain Gideon Gardner and Naomi Parker Gardner. In 1832 his parents moved to Ohio, and while living in Chatham, he with James and Dr. Amos Babcock were boys together. On April 15, 1852 he was united in marriage to Harriet Lyon in Chatham and here a son, L. B. Gardner was born to them. In 1852 in company with his father he moved to Grinnell, Iowa, living there eleven years on a farm which today is known as Gardners Grove. While living here in a log house three children were born, Harriet, Ida, Henry, all living and with him at the time of his death. March 1865 he moved to New Hampton purchasing the hotel from Mr. Don Jackson and managing the hostelry till 1876 when he sold it to Mr. John Dickson, and in 1877 he engaged in the drug business, in company with his son-in-law, Mr. E. N. Olmsted. After 12 years he turned his interests in the store over to his son, H. W. Gardner, and since that time has lived a retired life. W. D. Gardner was a pioneer of Iowa, and many were the hardships he and his wife were called upon to endure. He has spent 56 years of his life in New Hampton, outliving many of his old friends and only a few survive him. His was a good life and at the age of 92 years 8 months and 11 days his Master called him home. Mr. and Mrs. Gardner joined the Congregational Church of this city November 5, 1865 and he has been a Deacon of the church for a good many years as was his father before him. His wife, the saintly Harriet, preceded him three years ago, after living together 66 years and he leaves to revere his name, his four children; L.B. Gardner of Los Angeles, California, Mrs. E. N. Olmsted, Mrs. Ida W. Bigelow, and H. W. Gardner, of this city, two grandsons, Dr. H. H. Olmsted of Waterloo, Iowa, and Dr. H. B. Gardner of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and three great grand children, Miss Dorothy Bigelow of Chicago, Weston Duane and Jane Elizabeth Gardner of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. H. H. Olmsted and wife were present. L. B. Gardner sent word he could not be present as also did Dr. H. B. Gardner. The funeral was held from his late home, Thursday afternoon, September 1, 1921 at 4 o’clock, his pastor W.D. Spiker officiating, speaking from the text: “A good man leaveth a goodly inheritance to his children’s children.” Proverbs 13:22. Mr. W. A. Smith of Dubuque sang “Thy Will Be Done” and “Crossing the Bar”. At the grave Mrs. M. C. Sayers, Mrs. M. E. Geiser, Charles Spiker and W. A. Smith sang “Abide with Me”. Not for him be our tears, rather let us crown his grave with garlands, few of us will live as long or as well, and fewer yet will the Angel of Death greet with such a loving touch.

Gardner Olmsted 1855-1944 <http://iagenweb.org/boards/chickasaw/obituaries/index.cgi?rev=50370> AUTHOR: Cheryl Leech DATE: 5/4/2004 at 19:53:59 Surnames: OLMSTED Mrs. Hattie Olmsted Hattie S. Gardner eldest daughter of Weston D. and Harriet N. Gardner was born at Grinnell, Iowa on April 13, 1855. She with her parents, two brothers and one sister, came to New Hampton in 1865 to make their home. New Hampton has been her home for nearly 80 years, except for the past two years, when, because of failing health, she has been under the loving care of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Harry H. Olmsted of Waterloo, Iowa. She suffered a stroke on Monday, May 15, which confined her to her bed. The following Monday she passed quietly away after rounding out over eighty-nine years of living in which she has seen many changes and tremendous developments. On July 28, 1875 Hattie Gardner was united in marriage with Earl Newton Olmsted. To this home further happiness came with advent of a son, Harry. In 1877 Mr. Olmsted entered the drug business in New Hampton, in which he continued to his death on April 4, 1939. Mrs. Olmsted was an active member of the First Congregational Church of New Hampton, of which her parents were charter members. She was an accomplished musician, and gave freely of her talent in service to the church, as soprano soloist and also as organist. She was active in Ladies Aid and even in these latter years, when unable to attend, maintained her financial interest in the church and was interested in its activities. In personal ways she was always a loyal and generous friend, and will be missed by many. Those who remain to mourn her loss include her son Harry and his wife and their two children, Russell W., now serving his country in the Army Air Corps and Harriet M. Olmsted, all of Waterloo; and a brother, Mr. H. W. Gardner of New Hampton. A great many friends unite in extending their sympathy today to these relatives along with their appreciation of the fine character of Mrs. Olmsted. A poem entitled “Growing Older”, found among her papers, form a fitting tribute to her long and fruitful life.

Olmsted, 84 Dies Tuesday Funeral Today One of New Hampton’s Oldest Citizens and Most Successful Businessmen. Active for Over 68 Years E.N. Olmsted, notable citizen and businessman of New Hampton, passed away at his residence on North Chestnut Avenue Tuesday morning April 4, at 3:30 o’clock. He had not been well for many months. Recently he submitted to an operation in the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. However the cause of death is given as coronary sclerosis, a form of heart disease. Had Mr. Olmsted lived until July 28 he would have been 85 years of age. The deceased was the only son of Dr. E.H. and Eunice Olmsted and was born at Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, July 28, 1854. When a small child he lived at West Union with his parents, later at Fredericksburg and from there they came to New Hampton where he had resided 68 years at the time of his death. He received his education in the best schools and colleges of his day, the public schools, the Bradford Academy and the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Keokuk. For these many years he has been a registered pharmacist and an active druggist in New Hampton. He and his partner, H. W. Gardner, have successfully conducted such a business in New Hampton for more than half a century. In 1875 Mr. Olmsted was married to Hattie S. Gardner, eldest daughter of the late W.D. and Harriet Gardner of this city, and a sister to his partner in business. They have one son, Harry O. Olmsted (correction: Harry H. Olmsted) of Waterloo. Mrs. Olmsted and their son remain to mourn. He also leaves two grandchildren, Harriet Margaret Olmsted and Russell Olmsted, of Waterloo. Beside these he leaves his partner of a life-time business, H. W. Gardner, and other relatives and so many friends. Throughout his life he has enjoyed the business confidence of two generations and more. By honesty and strict application to his affairs he has been a success in the way of the world and enjoyed the confidence and high esteem of many people. His nearly 85 years of life were mostly active, even down to 1939, and he drove his own car down to his place of business almost to the last month. His mental faculties never failed him. He took the world as it came and was kindly disposed toward his fellowmen, never expressing a criticism or unkind word about anyone. For many years he was identified as a stockholder and director of the State Bank and shouldered more than his share of losses. For two terms he was treasurer of Chickasaw County and all through life identified himself with the democratic party. Mr. Olmsted’s life was a notable career, and there are many who mourn, because he cannot be among us still longer. To his wife and life companion of 64 years, to his son and grandchildren, to his partner, and to other relatives and close friends we extend our heartfelt sympathy. His funeral will be held this Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock from Perry’s Funeral Home and will be conducted by his pastor and friend, Reverend W. D. Spiker, of the Congregational church. Arthur Boettcher and Louise Wittenburg will sing. Burial will be at Graceland cemetery with his parents and so many friends. His pallbearers will be Harry Friend, John Howard, W.J. David, R. B. Sheakley, Don Iverson and John Mueller. The business places in New Hampton will close from 3 to 4 o’clock out of respect to its oldest active businessman.

    3. Hi Listers ! I am passing this on from another Mailing List. Sincerely, Mike, IACHICKA-L Administrator ------------------------ Hello, Iowa genealogists! We have two new orphan counties available for someone to adopt: Jackson County on the eastern edge of Iowa and Page County on the southwestern side of the state. Think about how much Iowa volunteers have done for you and consider a not-so-random genealogical act of kindness. If you adopt a county, you will benefit other researchers, join a great team of volunteers, and have an experience that's creative and fun as well. What are the requirements? An Internet connection, a very basic knowledge of HTML, and the ability (or willingness to learn) to FTP (upload) files to a server. Most of us started with the Internet connection and a shaky knowledge of the other two requirements. We learned on the job and keep learning, often from each other. If you're interested in hosting Howard, Osceola, Worth or one of our new orphans, Jackson or Page, write to me for an application. We'd love to welcome you into our family! That's what happens when you get distracted, I guess. Anyway, I did want to thank you for the information you provided. It looks like you have gotten the right family, since the 1930 census info is absolutely correct. At least that information leads me in the right direction. Louis' last residence was Waterloo, IA, so obituary information for him and his wife should have been in the Waterloo Courier. It may not be in the online records. All the sons except Stanley and Andrew resided last in Waterloo; those two would have been New Hampton, Chickasaw County, IA last residences. I may be able to get more info from the New Hampton library. My best guess on death dates for Louis and Josephine are that Louis died in the 1970's and Josephine would have been prior to 1967. I have just begun researching this line for my children. It is their paternal family line. Your help ! is much appreciated.

I have just begun researching this family for my children (it is their father's lineage). I am certain that the 1895 census you found is the same family, as the 1930 census is definitely the right family, with Stewart living with Louis and Josephine. The other information seems correct, as well. I'm sorry, I do not know death dates at this time, but may be able to get them from a (former) family member. My best estimate is that Louis died in the 1970's, but Josephine was deceased prior to 1967. Louis' last residence was in Waterloo, IA, and it is almost certain that the obituaries were published in the Waterloo Courier for both. The last residence for the all of the sons except Stanley and Andrew was also Waterloo. Stanley and Andrew's last residences were New Hampton, IA in Chickasaw County, IA. I may be able to locate obituaries at the Chickasaw County library. Again, thanks for your help.
