Douglas, according to my records he was born 4-25-1856 and died 5-6-1942 in Waterloo. His wife's name was Betsey Oleson. She was born 9-25-1861 and died 10-20-1925. They were married in Chickasaw County 3-1-1881. They are buried in Fairview Cemetery in Waterloo. Her parents were Lewis (Lars) Oleson and Mari Guttormsdotter from Norway. That is the Cutsforth connection. My husband's grandmother was Mary Oleson Cutsforth. I will keep looking for information. If you would care to give me your e-mail address and I find any obituaries I can send them to you. It's up to you if you want to give it out. My address is char173@mchsi.com. I knew Mable Zipsie (Stanley's wife) when I was a little girl. We lived neighbors in the country. I don't remember much about her except that they seemed to be a kind family.

I would particularly like obituaries for either of them, and any other information that can be obtained. Stanley Douglas, son of Louis and Josephine, was my ex-father-in-law, and I am tracing the family tree for my children. They have no pictures and no information about their ancestors on their father's side, so will be grateful for anything at all. I knew the Cutsforth's were related (I used to have Clarence Cutsforth do my taxes!), but I did not know exactly how they tied in. Thanks for your response.

    3. Hi Glenda ! A couple things: First if you go to this web site - http://iagenweb.org/chickasaw/ - and enter NATVIG into the search box you will get a couple items on that surname. Also, if you go to this web page - http://iagenweb.org/chickasaw/surnameindex4.htm - and follow those instructions you can get the surname list published for others to see. I hope these suggestions can help. Do you have some dates, sibling, wife, children names? Do you think Ole is Ale? In 1937 there is an Ole Natvig who received losses due to a fire. Sincerely, Mike

General Notes: SELAH B. TRASK Newspaper: New Hampton Tribune Date: May 2, 1899 Died -- At the home of his son Mr. John TRASK, S.B. TRASK, Monday April 24, 1899 in Deerfield at the advanced age of 89 years, 6 months and 9 days. S.B. TRASK was born in Deerfield, Franklin Co, Mass Oct 15th 1809; was married to Rebecca H. EATON Feb. 21st 1833; from that time till 1855 he lived during different periods in the states of Massachusetts, New Hampshire and New York. In the year 1855 he emigrated in company with several others to the then far west Iowa. He entered a piece of land in Deerfield Township and thereon built him a home wherein he has continued to reside all these long 44 years. His wife Rebecca H. TRASK died March 22nd, 1897, preceding him 2 years. For 64 years they traveled the journey of life hand in hand through the vissitudes of pioneer life rearing their little family and later enjoying the fruits of goodly competence won by their united efforts. The last few years they have drifted peacefully side by side down the river lovingly cared for by their son John and his family. The mother entered the harbor first, but Uncle Selah TRASK told the writer but last summer that he would soon join the loved ones on the other shore, as he felt his strength giving way day by day. He was the father of seven children, five sons and two daughters, of whom two sons and one daughter precede him and with the mother were waiting with outstretched arms to welcome the "ancient mariner" as his barque touched the golden shore. Three sons & one daughter survive him, Albert, Henry, and Emily reside in Michigan while the son John with whom he lived at the time of his death is one of Chickasaw County's most honored citizens. Mr. Trask has been a life long democrat and it is stated that at one time he cast the only democratic vote in Deerfield Township. For years his party was in the minority but he lived to see the day and rejoice over it that his vote in Deerfield Township was with the majority. It was a comfort to his friends that his last days were painless, he suffered from no bodily disease just slowly sank to his long rest with the satisfaction that his work was done and was ready for his reward. He was noted for his activity and walked to Bassett a distance of 3 miles when he was 87 years old. The funeral was held Monday, Dec. 7th, from the Congregational Church in Ionia, services conducted by the pastor and the interment was beside her husband in Riverside Cemetery at Chickasaw. Uncle Selah was a sincere believer in the Universalist father, but as no universalist minister was available, Rev. Everhardt was asked to officiate which he did ably and presented many a thought to ponder over. His remains were laid beside his wife in the Beckwith Cemetery. Edward is known to have been in Chicago prior to his marriage bef. 1838. Johanna Shane Quirk, his wife, is known to have emmigrated to the US via Canada, Quebec specifically. Their exact marriage date and place is unknown. Johanna's mother and two brothers lived on a neighboring farm in South Fork Township, Delaware County, IA. The closest Quirks to Edward Quirk were James and Johanna Curran Quirk in Jones County. Good catch on Theressa. That probably explains the order. Anna Quirk Dillon d. 29 Aug 1917. The Kate Quirk Brannon d. abt 1905?. Both in Chickasaw County.

The birthplace pattern in Edward's family shows them in Mississippi in the latter 1830s. It's possible that they were in NY earlier in the decade, but I would be inclined to entertain the possibility that they immigrated through a port in/near New Orleans. I checked the 1860 census image for Edward's household, and it includes Theressa. I don't know why she is listed out of age order, but FYI, she is listed as "Dumb." I'm not related to the Quirk/Quick families in any way. Just doing lookups. If you have specific death dates for either Anna or Kate, I'd be glad to check the Historical Newspaper Collection to see if I can find an obituary for either one, which might mention surviving siblings.

Quirk Dillion. There are other Quirks in the Chickasaw County area too as there are today, including an Iowa state legislator. I still curious if the Quirks of Chickasaw County are related to the Quirks of Delaware County. Your reply did get me thinking on another Quirk mystery, whether or not the Edward Quirk family was related to a neighboring Quirk family. Theressa may hold the clue as she is not listed in age order with the other children in the Quirk household. She may be a neice. Are our families in anyway linked? My Delaware Co. ancestral surnames are Shane and Quirk. Thanks again.

Dillenbeck's store, Harry Wood, a stone mason by trade, insane from drink, came running up the street with a loaded shot gun. He fired once and the gun was wrested from him and hidden. Rushing into the store he grabbed a giant cracker and would have lit it by the lamp had Dillenbeck not pushed him away, but light it he did on the store porch, but Dillenbeck jumped and succeeded in making him throw it away just as it exploded with an awful report. Just at this moment M.F. Lighthall had lighted one up a little farther up the street. With a scream like a maniac Wood jumped and grabbed the lighted giant cracker, though they all shouted and Dillenbeck commanded him to let alone, and with an oath and yell he raised it above his head, and before anyone had time to interfere there was an explosion, and as he staggered toward the light only the stub of the wr! ist could be seen with blood spurting from every pore. Dillenbeck grasped his arm with a vice-like grasp and held him until Dr. Gillespie got there and bound it up. But a short time elapsed after he was taken home before Drs. Rawlins and Gillespie had everything made ready, and this drunken man, a victim of his own folly, was laid on a table[,] chloroform administered, and the arm amputated below the elbow. Mr. Wood spent a sorrowful Fourth, as well as his striken [sic] wife and family. In fact this awful accident has cast a gloom over the whole community. Yet no one can attach any blame except to those "who furnish their neighbors drink."
