Hi Carolyn ! I sent your note on to the county coordinators who are a pretty informed group and below are two answers I received. I'm getting ready to go on a trip, but when I get back if I have any more answers different from these two I will pass to you. Sincerely, Mike Peterson IAGenWeb Chickasaw County Coordinator IAGenWeb Dickinson County Coordinator ---- Everton's has gone out of business, which is a shame. I've been getting their magazine since the 80's, and I'll miss it. They apparently have given all of their archives (books, pedigree charts, manuscripts, etc.) to the City of Logan, Utah. --------- If I remember correctly, I read in the paper a while back that Everton had donated their holdings to the city of Logan. At first it seemed like a great deal for the town then as they began to realize how many more people they would have to hire etc. they are having 2nd thoughts about accepting the donation and having free access. I think the Evertons are all gone and they are just getting out of business. I don't know about the magazine. One article said they would honor the subscriptions but I have seen that promise from other genealogy publishers who didn't. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Carolyn Caplinger" <cmcaplinger@sbcglobal.net> To: <IACHICKA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 18, 2004 7:30 PM Subject: [IACHICKA] Everton's Family History Magazine > other library that also gets the magazine since it is across town. I just recently realized that I have not been receiving my subscription to Everton's Family History Magazine, although I renewed my subscription in April. I tried to call the company today. The 800# gave me a fast busy signal. One Utah phone number was just a machine that said something like you have reached Everton. The other Utah phone number I found just rang and rang. Their web site doesn't look very professionally done. It kind of indicates that they are changing things again. I finally decided to check the issue on the shelf at one of our libraries. It is the May/June, which is the last one I received. I haven't checked the other library that also gets the magazine since it is across town. Does anyone know if Everton Publishers has gone out of business or what has happened? Carolyn Caplinger --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. (my great grandfather), Mary, Sara and George. In the 1880 U.S. Census for New Hampton Township, Chickasaw County, Iowa page 46, Bernard is shown as "B. Sweeney" a widower, living with his children Mary and George. If this Sara is your Sara Sweeney Jordan, it may be that she married between 1870 and 1880. I think Mary Sweeney was married to a man named Holden, and she had moved to York, York County, Nebraska by 1906. (Bernard Sweeney's 1906 obituary says he died at the home of his daughter in York.) I found a Mary Sweeney with twin daughters surnamed Holden living in York in the 1910 U.S. Census. In 1915, Mary had moved to Long Beach, California and in that year married a man named Herman Silberberg there. This last information was recorded in her baptismal registry of the Catholic parish in the little town in Cambria County, Pennsylvania where she was born. I'm adding all this in case it helps make more connections between your Sara Sweeney Jordan and this Sweeney family I am connected to.

Garitt DATE: 11/15/2004 at 16:06:26 Surnames: WILSON,MCDONALD,JOHNSTON,CASTOR,RUST,WESP,HEALD,SMITH,PIERCE,WEDEMEYER,ECKENRODE,KRIEGER From The Nashua Reporter (date unknown) Mrs. Mary Johnston Mary Wilson was born Dec. 25, 1836 in Londonderry, Ireland and died at her home March 13, 1913, at the age of 76 years, 2 months and 18 days. She became a Christian at an early age being baptized in the Presbyterian Church. At the age of eleven years she came with her parents to this country, landing in New York, where she remained for a time. From there they came to Kenotia County, Wis., settling on a farm and remaining there till the age of seventeen, when she was united in marriage to Mr. David McDonald in November, 1855. Together they came by ox team to Chickasaw County and settled on a farm seven miles east of Bradford where they endured the hardships of early settlers. To this union five children were born, James McDonald of Wessington Springs, S.Dak. being the only one who survives her. Her husband died July 14, 1861. On August 17, 1862 she was united in marriage to Mr. George Johnston of North Richland, who preceded her to the better home June 9, 1888. To this union eight children were born, six girls and two boys: Mrs. Perry Castor, Mrs. James Smith, George and Andrew, of this vicinity; Mrs. F.W. Smith, Wenatchee, Wash; Mrs. George Pierce of Webster, S.Dak. and Mrs. F.E. Nelson, of Livingston, Mont., all who survive her, and Mrs. Ed Eckenrod, who died May 27, 1907. She being the mother of 13 children. She also leaves to mourn her death one sister, Mrs. Matilda Kreger of Plainfield, two brothers, Thomas and Andrew Wilson of Oregon, besides twenty-four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The past several years she has been cared for by her daughter, Mrs. James Smith, who was ever ready to administer to her wants with tender devotion. About one year ago she suffered a partial stroke of paralysis which left her void of speech. As "love begets love," the beautiful devotion of her daughters toward her in her sickness and old age is one of the grandest exhibitions of love and self-sacrifice known in this earthly sphere. As her sickness and helplessness increased, it seemed as though the tender solicitude of her loving daughters ever and always increased. The funeral was held Sunday from the Disciple's Church at Republic by Otis L. Spurgeon of the Baptist Church of Nashua, and the burial was in the Republic Cemetery. (End) CONTRIBUTOR'S NOTES: Mary Wilson came to America in July, 1850 at the age of 13. The date of her marriage to David McDonald in Yorkville, Racine County, WI was Janary 5, 1855. David died in Chickasaw County and is buried in the Republic Cemetery with two of their children. Please contact me for additional information about the McDonald and Johnston families.

Garitt DATE: 11/15/2004 at 15:52:52 Surnames: WILSON,MCDONALD,CASTOR,RUST,WESP,HEALD,WEDEMEYER,SMITH,PIERCE,NELSON,ECKENRODE From The Nashua Reporter, June 21, 1888 DIED at his home in Richland Township, Chickasaw County, Iowa, June 9, 1888, Mr. George Johnston at the age of 68 years. Deceased was born in Donigal Co., Ireland. He always had a great desire to travel, having crossed the Atlantic Ocean five times and the Pacific twice, thereby acquainting himself with the world and worldly affairs. At the age of 18 he was a surveyor in Ireland, at 21, a policeman in England for 4 years. He then came to America and was an attendant in a Philadelphia hospital for 7 years, going to California during the gold fever, remaining there 4 years, afterwards returned to Philadelphia visiting relatives. Then he moved to Iowa, purchased a farm, living on it six years, then united in marriage with Mary McDonald of this place on August 17, 1862, raising a large family, six girls and three boys to mourn his loss, three of whom are married, the rest are at home with their mother. In early life he became a member of the Episcopal Church and always believed in Christian life, though not as strict as he would have been had there been a church of his denomination near. He was a good husband, a kind father and esteemed friend. His loss is felt at home and abroad. His empty chair, his removed slippers, the nobility of his life is all that is left. His death will be irreparable to his aged wife and fond children as they travel on through life, bereft at an early age of fathers love and advise. (End) CONTRIBUTOR'S NOTES: George Johnston was the son of James and Mary Ann Crawford Johnston, of near Ballybofey, County Donegal, IRE. His older brother, Robert, who was married to Sarah Selena Crowther, was also a Chickasaw County resident. George is buried in the Richland/Republic Cemetery, land which was donated to the county for a cemetery by his wife, Mary Wilson McDonald Johnston. The third son listed in this obituary was Mary's son, James A. McDonald, by her first marriage. Please contact me for additional family information.

JOHNSTON Died September 25, 1937 (Newspaper Source Unknown. Possibly the Nashua Reporter.) HORTON FARMER DIES AT WAVERLY HOSPITAL George JOHNSTON, 72, was Native of Chickasaw County; Funeral was Held Monday Funeral services were held Monday at Horton for George JOHNSTON, 72, who died early Saturday morning at the Waverly Hospital. A brief service at 1:30 at the home was followed by services at 2 oclock in the Baptist Church in Horton. Rev. W. C. (cant read name), pastor of the Waverly Methodist Church, officiated, assisted by Rev. McClure, pastor of the Horton church. Burial was in the Horton cemetery. George Crawford JOHNSTON, son of George and Mary WILSON JOHNSTON, was born December 15, 1864 in Chickasaw County, Iowa, and died at Mercy hospital in Waverly, at 1:45 oclock Saturday morning, September 25, 1937. Death was caused by an embolism. Mr. Johnston grew up on a Chickasaw County farm and as a boy attended school in that locality. At the age of thirty-four he moved from Chickasaw county to Bremer County and located on a farm northeast of Horton. So long as he was able to lead an active life, he was engaged in agricultural pursuits and his entire life was spent in this section of Iowa. His health began to fail some years ago and for the past two years or more he has been confined to a wheel chair. Prior to these years he was always a strong, active man. In spite of the fact that he was in poor health, it never changed his sunny disposition, nor his willingness to lend a helping hand to those in need. It was this trait that made him a loving husband and father and won for him a host of worthy friends. Baptised in Christian faith, he was ever ready to encourage deeds of truth and justice. This was his aim in life and his peaceful death was because of his trust in the Saviour who had given him endurance to bear the grief of his illness. Though the best medical attention was given, with the careful assistance of those who cared for him, it seemed that a higher life beyond was more commendable. His death will be deeply mourned by his loved ones. On March 20, 1895, he was united in marriage to Illa RUST, who survives him. He also leaves seven children, four sons and three daughters: Burness of Parkersburg; Clare, Kenneth and Richard, all of Horton; Mrs. Gladys HANNAN, Waterloo; Mrs. Marie CHESTER, Plainfield; and Mrs. Blanche OBERHEU, Waverly. Other survivors are one brother, Andrew, of near Horton, and four sisters: Mrs. Perry CASTOR and Mrs. George PIERCE, Nashua; Mrs. Jim SMITH and Mrs. Clyde HEALD, of Ionia. Also eleven grandchildren. Though he suffered much pain, Through this life as he trod, We hope for a peaceful rest In his home with God Contributors Notes: George had 7 siblings: Matilda Johnston CASTOR, Almira Johnston WESP-HEALD (no children except for Wesp marriage), Elizabeth Johnston PIERCE, Andrew JOHNSTON, Fannie Johnston SMITH, Marie Johnston NELSON, Mary Jane Johnston ECKENROD(E) (no children).
