Surnames: Cagley, Keyes, Kent Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Zk.2ADE/987.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Nashua Reporter (Nashua, Iowa) 1930 > March > 12 FORMER NASHUA RESIDENT DIES IN DALLAS, TEXAS Remains of Mrs. Mary KEYES Brought Back to Girlhood Home for In- terment--Funeral Saturday Mrs. Mary KEYES, who for many years was a resident of this community, and a woman loved and respected by all, died at her home in Dallas, Texas, Thursday, March 6th, and the body was brought to Nashua Saturday for interment. Left a widow when her three children were small, she maintained a home here until they were grown up and then, after their graduation from the Nashua high school, she moved with them to Waterloo, where there were greater opportunities for them. About seven years ago she went to Dallas, Texas to make a home for her son Carl and her daughter Vera, both of whom had accepted positions in that city. Her daughter Nell has a position with the government at Washington, D.C. Although Mrs. KEYES had never been very strong, her condition had not been considered serious. Death was due to heart trouble. Mary Etta CAGLEY, daughter of Levi and Eve CAGLEY, was born in Chickasaw county, Iowa, July 28, 1860, the tenth of a family of fourteen, two of whom still survive, namely, two brothers, James L. CAGLEY, of Nashua, and Martin L. CAGLEY of Hoquaim, Wash. She was a member of the First Baptist church of Nashua until she moved to Waterloo in May, 1914, at which time her church letter was transferred to the Westminster Presbyterian church of Waterloo. In October, of 1923, she moved with her family to Dallas, Texas, where she resided at the time of her death. She is survived by one son, Carl KEYES, of Dallas, Texas, and two daughters, Vera KEYES of Dallas, and Nell KEYES, of Washington, D.C. Her husband, George H. KEYES, preceded her in death on July 14, 1897. Funeral services were held at the Nashua Congregational church on Saturday, March. 8, at 1:30 p.m., Rev. Wm. KENT officiating, and interment was in Oak Hill cemetery.

Nor does he show up in Iowa Cemeteries database. According to Iowa Cemeteries database, there is a CAGLEY cemetery in/near Bradford Chickasaw IA. The following may be Christopher's father, in which case perhaps an obituary or will may be located: Levi Cagley death date 22 Apr 1872 cemetery Cagley town Bradford source Gravestone Records of Chickasaw County, Ia. There is an interesting legal notice in the Nashua Reporter, 1920 > July > 29 which seems to be clearing title to some property. It mentions Eve Cagley, C.L. Cagley, Melinda Jane Cagley and other Cagleys. I notice that the Iowa Marriages index includes the following--not a match, but possibly of interest: Name: CHRISTIAN E. KEGLEY Spouse: MILINDA J. CAGLEY Marriage Date: 24 Dec 1868 County: Chickasaw State: IA THe Nashua Reporter 1930 > March > 12 published a fairly extensive obituary for Mary ETTA Cagley Keyes, daughter of Levi & Eve. Henry(Heinrich) Hartmann and Clara Schwartzenstein ... were married February 14, 1889. ..." Paul, I took a look at the 1900 census, and it says that Henry and Clara have been married only one year, suggesting that the marriage year you provided is 10 years too early; I imagine that 1889 was just a typo in your post. As you may already know, the Iowa Marriages database gives Feb. 14, 1899, as their marriage date. I highly recommend getting a copy of their marriage records, as it may mention Henry & Clara's birthplaces and parents' names. Do you know your grandparents' death dates? Their death records or obituaries may mention their birthplaces. Have you seen Henry in the 1920 census? In that particular year, his birthdate is specified as Schaumburg-Lippe. The 1920 census also indicates that Henry was naturalized in 1892. You might want to contact the Chickasaw county vital records office to inquire how you can get a copy of his naturalization documents (including declaration AND petition); these MAY specify his place of birth, the ship on which he traveled to the US, specific date of arrival, etc. Have you looked for Henry in passenger lists? Was your father's middle name Richard? I find a Victor Richard HARTMAN living in Fredericksburg listed in the Nashua Reporter on 1 Oct 1941, among those who is to report to the [local draft board?] in New Hampton on October 7. Did your family live in "Billtown"--Williamstown? Do you have a sister Bernice? If so, I found her mentioned in Nashua Reporter, 1953 > March > 5 (running a high fever). Do you have a brother named Richard? If so, a photo of him riding a pony at Dairy Days in Fredericksburg is in the Nashua Reporter, 1958 > July > 10.

I checked the 1870 Iowa census and lots of Olson but not the right couple. I then checked the Wisconsin 1870 and they they are in the town of Dunn, Dane County, 3 June 1870. Ole Olson (30), Carrie (25), Carrie (3), Anna (5/12), Anna born in Wisconsin, all others in Norway (so you know about when they immigrated-do you have their ship?). Since you say that both parents died in the 70s they will not show up on any more census. Are you sure about those death dates? They died real young (in their 30s). If you want a copy of the 1870 census let me know.

Her family must have moved to Lawler sometime after (we have family records stating Annie was "from" Lawler, IA). Her father was Ole Olson (March 24, 1840-1876) and her mother was Kari Christendatter (July 25 1841-1866). Both parents were born in Norway. I don't know why they went to Lawler, or how long they stayed there, for that matter. I do know that on January 12, 1893 Annie married a John Rudenberg in the Delta County Michigan area. But I wonder how long the family was in Iowa before that?
