Specifically, I am in reference to the passage: "The first school in district #10 was held in a log house located 1/2 mile north of the present school house, just north of the Jenn's place on the east side of the road." I know where Pearl Rock is, in fact I drove through it today (Avenue Of The Saints/Hwy 218) today, but I can't pinpoint where their farm might have been. This, by default, had to be a reference to my great-grandparents Theodore Sr. and Anna Christina (Knecht) Jenn, the first Jenns in the US. Based on another part of Mrs. McGregor's article ("...first school built in 1862 or 1863..."), this had to be in the 1863-1866 (or so) time frame. Theodore Jenn, Sr., and Anna Knecht were both natives of Neunkirchen, Germany, now part of Cologne in the Rhineland. I do know that Theodore Jenn came to somewhere in the US in 1857, but don't know to what location. In October, 1861, Theodore Jenn and Anna Knecht were married in LaSalle County, Illinois, where apparently a lot of Rhinelanders settled for awhile before moving west. I do not know where they lived until my records indicate their 2nd son, John Jenn (my grandfather) was born in Nashua in 1866. I don't have access to the 1870 Chickasaw County census, but Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Jenn Sr. were residents of rural North Washington (South Washington township between North Washington and Ionia) in the 1880 census. They are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery just SW of North Washington, Iowa. The bottom line is that I am trying to fill in the gaps from 1857 to 1880. THEY had to be the Pearl Rock Jenns as Theodore Jenn's brother John Ferdinand Jenn (the N. Washington town blacksmith and 2nd Jenn to reach the US) didn't get to the US until 1867 when I believe he went straight to North Washington. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as I would like to develop a thorough genealogy for my grandchildren.

The years of her early girlhood were spent in Nashua, the family moving to Mason City in 1902. After three year's residence there and in Northfield, Minn., the family made their home in Osage, Iowa, where Mary spent her High school days, graduating in 1907. She attended the Cedar Valley Seminary 1908-1909 and following year entered Carleton college. A nervous break-down near the close of the year prevented her returning to her college work. Since then, her ambition has prompted her again and again to undertake further study, only to be prevented by ill health. Two years ago, she went with her parents to Ohio and soon after this, she developed symptoms of the disease which medical skill proved unable to conquer. Hoping that change of climate might prove beneficial, she went with her mother to Flordia early in November, The climate did not give the benefit hoped for and Mr. Eastman joined them there a few weeks ago. It was finally thought best to bring her back to Ohio. Columbus was reached Saturday, March 13, and the trip seemed to have been endured well, but, Sunday she passed into a diabetic coma, from which she did not rally, passing away Tuesday morning. Her brother, Joe Laird, and Mr. and Mrs Finely Eastman reached Columbus Monday night and were with the parents during her last hours. The journey was made from Columbus back to the old home town, Nashua, where the funeral service was held at the home of her aunts, the Misses Eastman, Friday, March 19. Rev. H. O. Allen, pastor of the Congregational church of Osage, Iowa, of which she was a member, officiated. Interment was in Greenwood cemetery by the side of her own father, J. H. Laird. Although so often baffled in accomplishing what she so desired to do, she cheerfully performed the work that her strength would permit. She was especially faithful as teacher of her Sunday school class of young girls and her influence was felt in the Endeavor society and in the Young Women's Christian Association. Possessing an unusally lovable and happy disposition, ready to be happy with her friends when they were happy, quick to sympathize with them when in trouble. always a most loyal friend, devoted daughter and sister, forgetting herself in the service of others, Mary will be sadly missed in the home and by her many friends.
